I’m hoping the Coppinger Row market is a little livelier in good weather; on my visit the handful of stalls set up in the chilly alley were working hard to keep warm, let alone busy. The offering is promising –chutneys and organic fruits, fresh baked goods and that wandering crêpe stall I see at every public event. The very nice hanging sign tells me the market was awarded for its good practice standards; the clean, mannerly shoppers were testament to those ambiguously positive standards. Here’s the thing-as nice as this is, it’s got a long way to go. I’ll let you know by how much once the weather improves.

I had never heard of this market until stumbling(quite literally) across it one morning with a few friends on the way to get some food after a night out in a pseudo-sleepwalk of sorts. We were all pleasantly surprised by the smells and sights of muffins, hummus, breads and pesto on offer. We stacked up and headed to the park instead of lining our stomachs with chicken nuggets and chips. Beats an Eddie Rocket’s any lunchtime

Ooh yeah I know — this street is usually so boring but it’s refreshing to see the markets here every week. It only gets 3 stars because the market is really small, so variety of choice isn’t huge. However I’d love to see them develop this market into something really special, and, who knows, maybe daily? Now THAT would be cool!

Accidentally stumbling upon this market was one of the nicest surprises I’ve had in Dublin for a while. Yes there are markets galore in and around the city these days, but for some reason, a market that magically appears out of nowhere midway through the week reminds you of how a city’s pulse is both random and, it has to be said, always on the button(I was proper hungry when I found it)! From Palestinian food(try the lentil soup, it’s delicious!) to proper organic fruit and veg(the bona fide muck is free!) and from homemade breads to jewellery, it’s only a little market but it covers all the bases. Coppinger Row is usually just a bit of a thoroughfare from the Grafton St. to the George’s St. sides of town, but at least now there’s a reason to take this particular connection rather than one of the less colourful ones. At least on a Thursday.
