This is a monument that so many people pass by daily and countless pictures are taken of both the front on Merrion row and the backside within Merrion square but not many people actually stop for a closer look.
This memorial fountain, although no longer with running water, is a beautiful addition to Merrion Square. The Merrion row side has two lions in which the water would pass through into basins. The Merrion square park side has a stone staircase with benches and beautiful trees.
People are always taking pictures here, I am certainly one of them.
I found some historical information online for those who may be curious:
It was built in 1791 from plans of Francis Sandys. It was erected in remembrance of Lord Lieutenant Charles Manners, Duke of Rutland, who died from fever in 1787. On the Monument are several friezes with scenes of the Duke’s family.
