Today I find myself writing my first 5 start review without actually ever having ate at a restaurant. Odd! I know right! So myself and the girlfriend dropped into Ely for something quick to eat. We had a quick scan of the menu which looked good to me! but my girlfriend(notoriously fussy eater) couldn’t see anything she liked so we decided to go else were. As there are a few places around that area. The waitress say us leave and asked if everything was ok to which I said no everything was fine just nothing took our fancy. We had only reached the door when she ran up to us again. My girlfriend had left her purse on the floor. We tanked her and went off into the elements outside. It was a terrible night! Heavy rain and a gale wind. Bad combination, both Milano’s and herbstreet were booked up with theatre goers. We were saturated at this point. We were up by the spar when the waitress came running up to us AGAIN wearing just a tshirt in this terrible terrible weather with my wallet which I had left on the table. That poor girl I’m sure was soaked when she got back in. I apologised to her for her having to come out in the weather and she just laughed it off and ran back in. Really sweet girl and really nice thing to do. I felt so bad and stupid having left my stuff there and made her run out in the storm. If she reads this Thank you so much :)

I ate here for the first time last night, and it was simply divine! The interior itself is really cosy, making it perfect for casual lunch, dinner, or just a few socials. Myself and the girls weren’t feeling too ravenous so we shared a lamb platter for two, which was more than enough to feed the three of us. The lamb came in three different styles: Shanks, Fillets, and Brisket style. Plenty to get stuck into and everything tasted awesome. We couldn’t get over the quality of the meat… it was sensational and cooked perfectly! The platter came with some savoury baby potatoes, spinach purée and a side of zingy tomato and mozzarella salad(my personal favourite!) I cannot WAIT for my next visit. Highly recommend!

It was a nice day, warm, not too sunny, when we headed into Grand Canal Square. we still decided to sit outside on the terrace area and watch all the going-ons in Gand Canal Square… We had the ‘From the Sea’ Gastro Bar Platter(€ 25) which was piled high with smoked salmon, brown crab rillette, calamari, crayfish cocktail, lemon, salsa verde and homemade brown bread. If there is any criticism its that there was too much of the fried calamari and not enough of the smoked salmon which was really good. Its a nice sharing dish though for 2. We also had a side of fries to accompany our seafood. We both loved this platter and its great value too. Perfect size to share for 2 or more if its just a light bite. With Ely, one of the main selling points is their wine list. We enjoyed a lovely bottle of Californian Zinfandel with our food. But really you could spend hours perusing the wine list, I love the selection by the glass too, nice if you want to try different wines.

Not sure how I forgot to check in here but it needs to be noted that this place is awesome! I’m stunned at such bad reviews it’s received from some people as the food is great! It’s always busy and sometimes the overworked but attentive staff can be slow to get back to you, but wow the food, drink and product knowledge the staff have make up for the speed of service(I’ve only visited at peak times on a weekend, it may be quicker during the week) each time we’ve visited my wife and I have left very happy and very full! The food is great… I just don’t get the bad reviews they don’t make sense! It must be the competition reviewing them… Anyhow, enough of that… Is a must visit in my books.

Sooooo viele Sorten! Die Preise sfallen entsprechend etwas höher aus. Das Essen ist auch sehr lecker.

Discovered the presumably most unique beer here: KWAK. Comes in a round glass, unable to stand still without being held up by a special wooden construction. Great reminiscence of Brussels. Enjoy it with a gluten-free bacon burger. Prost.

I like the bar snack choices here — it’s a great place to come for a after-work drink. They have some cocktails, a nice beer selection as well as quite a few finger foods to choose from. If you’re just looking for a snack to have with your drink, definitely get the sharing platters. We got the meat and cheese platter and it was more than enough for three of us. The servers here are really, really nice and up for a good chat. I love how friendly they always are!

Had a super pleasant evening here with my girlie… Great wine selection and menu options are plenty… We are for the bar food menu and ok, I had a little bit of a bad experience with my main, a sneaky hair turned up win my pea purée from fish and chips option however the 4 stars above reflects how great the waitress and front of house manager dealt with it… Super apologetic, replaced dish in 5 mins plus offered my friend additional food to keep her content whilst I was delayed with my main, they delivered 2 dessert options to the table complimentary and again continuously attentive with us all night! I would definitely eat here again, great eatery and great location

The venue is rather nice and decadent with the comfy soft furnishings. We were here for a Unilocal event and they reserved a lovely corner of the place for us with our own bar. Not being a fan of mulled wine, which was on offer on this occasion, I got my own round in. The two drinks I ordered from the main bar cost 13.45EUR for a pint of Aspalls cider and a bottle of IPA. Craft beer is becoming a spendy choice in this fair city of ours. The loos were a bit far away, unless there are toilets on the ground floor that I missed? I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back to ely gastro bar, but if I was in the area for some reason, like going to the nearby venue, I’d probably pop in here for a craft beer. Just the one mind, two rounds would make it a very expensive night indeed.

I love Ely. I have been to their other locations but had not had the opportunity to visit this one until the other night. It is just as good, if not better than the other locations. In fact, due to the location at Grand Canal Dock, I might have to say I like it even better because there is so much to do around here it really makes it a great spot for dinner or a night out. The food is amazing, the staff are great, and they have a great beer selection including many craft beers from Ireland which is always an added bonus.

Ely is great — if Gastro Bar or the restaurant on Baggot Street! Beautiful menu, wines and very nice interior! Modern, lounge like and spacious. I love the restaurant especially in the summer as you can sit outside, enjoy tapas style food and a few warm hours!

Ooo, shocked that here only has an avg 3 stars. Thought 4 is fairly fair at least. Nice atmosphere in the main floor with very helpful bar staff. I had dinner here a few weeks ago– went for the vegetarian option and it was just filled with so many different flavours and the hallumi was cooked to perfection. Was surprised at their pre theatre menu combo though. It actually cost more than if you bought the items individually, strange but maybe there is something I’m missing. I have been known for it. Heard last night that they were one of the first to stock craft beers years ago before everyone else latched on. So fair play to them. Nice o hara’s.

Popped in for an end of evening cocktail on Sunday night, delicious peartini. Service was a little slow but nothing that wouldn’t stop me going back!

Had the pleasure of a lovely lunch here yesterday, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the market fish(of which variety I cannot remember!!) Either way it was a lovely panfried(and perfectly cooked) white fish, with a well seasoned skin left on. There were two fillets there as well — loads to get stuck into. The fish came on a bed of mashed potato with horseradish on top(not too much or not too hot), surrounded by a delicious zingy tomato sauce with fresh green peas in it. It looked lovely and tasted even better. I didn’t realise that the meat and some of the veg is actually grown on a farm owned by the proprietors. Again, contrary to previous reviews, the service was fast and attentive. A few notes on Ely in general: — They’ve brought out a cookbook so you can attempt to make their luvely nosh at home — They have a wine club every Tuesday — And wine tasting evenings each Thursday of Aug & Sep where wines from different regions are paired with suited food. This place does have the ‘shiny corporate’ bar look that wouldn’t normally be my type of thing, however i believe the food and service I receidved yesterday would have me coming back over and over again.(Plus the view of the water if that feckin sun would ever shine!)

I really dislike ely. The problem is that they are one out of two places around the Grand Canal area if you’re looking for an After-work Drink that’s NOT in a pub. One Star is for the location, as I work just down the Road and it’s simply convenient. The other Star is for their Wine Selection, which is quite good(although I would expect that from a wine bar anyway…) The service here is truly appalling. Apart from two or three people who work behind the bar, their staff is unfriendly and downright rude, with an «I don’t give a crap» Attitude and the knowledge that they don’t *have* to be nice because people will come here anyway. I tend to avoid ely unless my other choice is fully packed or there’s some sort of «Goodbye Drinks» from a co-worker. If all you want is a(slightly overpriced) drink and you don’t expect to receive good service, then this is your place.

Good food and drink but a little pricey for what it’s worth. My cod fillet with curry granola and potato fondant was gorgeous although my mate’s fillet steak was only acceptable with shrivelled looking chips. My mate paid € 8.50 for a glass of wine(a whole bottle of the same wine costs € 10 in Superquinn); my beer choice of the O’Hara Curim wheat beer was excellent. All in all, I left the restaurant a happy man, my friend less so — so I guess it’s a hit and miss with the menu.

I am a big fan of Ely in all three locations. I was in Grand Canal two weeks ago with a really big group. They looked after us so well — the waiter, Martin, was an absolute gem. My Mum totally fell in love with him and he was not only super friendly and knowledgeable about the wine and food but also really efficient. One of our group was working so arrived late after dinner when the kitchen had closed but they got her some cheese, cold meats and bread. So accommodating and really nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely book here again with the next big group night out I had as it was effortless and everyone had a great night. Finally and probably most importantly the food was very good, the wine list is fantastic and it didn’t break the bank.

I think this would be a very nice place for drinks & snacks before or after a performance at the Bord Gais Energy Theater. I am not sure it’s worth a trip for the restaurant itself. the salads were quite good, and the steamed vegetables we ordered as a side dish were perfectly prepared. My dining companion also enjoyed the fish & chips very much. Unfortunately the other mains were a disappointment. The burger was way too thick, but managed to be quite dry. There was a dish that sounded like macaroni & cheese, but it was basically noodles & veg in a thin, grayish sauce, only TOPPED with a little cheese. That may simply be an issue of unrealistic expectations … beer list was quite large though, so it’s a great place to go if you’re looking for ‘other-than-Guiness today please.’

First of all ‘Gastro Pub’ is a misnomer. This is a ‘Bar and Restaurant’ if ever I saw one, and it’s pretty decent. We headed here for dinner before going over to see Oliver! at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre and I think we made an alright choice. They could seat us, which was surprising as they were clearly packed. We were led through the Bar area(bar, not pub!) to the more ‘restauranty’ area(not pub!) in the back. The décor is moody, very dark with low lighting and tassles everywhere. They even have tiny booths in ‘thoroughfare’ areas which are cordoned off by tassles hanging from the ceiling. I thought this was nice as it makes the extra seating more intimate and private. I ordered the fish and chips because I’m adventerous like that, but there was a wide selection of fancy bread, fancy cheese and all sorts of burgers which, kind of, justifies the Gastro Pub part of the name! The fish and chips were alright, the chips served in a mini basket and the fish on a pea purée with tartar sauce. The plate also had a mini personal bottle of vinegar, which I thought was a nice touch. It was a decent, hearty dinner. For desert I chose a baked pear dish, I can’t remember the name of the dish but it was basically pear upside-down cake. It was served with cinnamon and some crème anglaise which came in a tiny jug. Overall I approve. The toilets were a bit odd, I had a compete sensory overload! The restaurant, while quite comfortable, is extremely loud as the music is set quite high and people are trying to talk over it. When you walk into the toilets(if you can find them!) the bright lights hit you and the volume of the music can be felt with full force! Quite unnerving! The staff can’t be faulted, they were absolutely perfect. Diligent, efficient and a good bit of banter, they make you feel comfortable and welcome.
