I just found this place on Unilocal.I did a search of pubs in Dublin before we visited from the US last year and found this place online. We had a nice time there. Very quaint pub with good trad music. Asked if the owners were around and they found Michael for me. I explained who I was and he was very gracious and offered some history of the place. Wish I could have stayed longer. Will definitely visit again next time I get to Dublin. Missing the Emerald Isle a lot and wish I was there now. The people are grand. Sláinte

My husband and I made the sightly long trek to Hughes specifically for the live traditional music and the trip was well worth it. The music, played by seven Irishmen was superb although, I’m not sure how I felt about being smashed into the small room, quarantined from the rest of the pub. I don’t know what the purpose of this quarantined room was for — is it because the music should be cherished and therefore, the room is to keep the noise from the main pub area out? Is it because the music is supposed to be played in a small, intimate settings? I’m not sure. What I am sure about is that the musicians are super friendly and are there because they love to play music. Most of them have been playing their instruments for 30+ years. I loved the ambience, the short conversations they had in-between songs and the fact that they weren’t expecting us to buy a round for them. Would definitely return when/if I ever return to Dublin.

This is a terrific Irish traditional music pub. It seems not to open early(what are its hours, anyway?), but after 10PM, the music is superb. Not at all like Temple Bar amplified Allman Brothers covers, but rather a set of Irish musicians, facing each other(not the audience), and playing the music they want to play. Fiddles, pipes, whistles, mandolins — whoever is around and feels good enough to join, does so. Seems to be lots of regulars who know the musicians too — a very lovely, comfortable, feel, for a late night listen and drink. Don’t miss it — it’s the real thing.

‘Hughes is one of a couple of early pubs along the Luas line. It’s also very conveniently located near the Four Courts. So if you’re feeling a bit shaky about your pending court case, head in and have a few pints to steady the nerves. Not sound legal advice? Ok maybe not, but they do have such a large range of opening hours that it suits people coming off the night shift who want to have a pint or two before heading to bed. If you’re not a morning drinker they’ve also got some pretty good trad music in the evening. The place doesn’t normally fill up all the way so you can definitely get a seat and have a quiet pint with friends.

Hughes is one of Dublin city’s oldest traditional music venues. It holds music sessions nightly. This place is usually dead during the day and early evening but come 10pm the place is teaming with locals and musicians, there were 12 musicians playing all flutes and fiddles. It wasn’t the most lively of trad nights, not at all like a Temple Bar sing a long fest but it was really authentic and the musicians were playing more for themselves than the audience!
