Saturday night and I stood outside in the cold waiting for my friend because the place was so packed I was intimidated to be the only American in there all by myself. A nice woman having a smoke invited me in to join her, her husband, and her friends! Her man bought me a punt straight away and bought my friend one when she arrived too! By the end of the night we were are singing and dancing together. This place is great if you don’t mind loads of older people singing and dancing into all hours of the morning.

This place has the name Matt Weldon’s over the door, but yes it is known as The Slipper. The first two times in this pub I was met with a surly, no chit chat bar tender. But he always was good about doing his job. So I can’t really complain about that right? The pints are about 4,80 euro. Not bad, but not cheap. The Slipper is starting a student drink night on Tuesday with 3 euro pints and other specials. I heard that there is a student special, a meal and a pint of Fosters for 10 euro. I’m going to check out the food in this place one of these days. The place is actually larger than it appears… the front of the bar is what I have referred to as an «old man’s pub,» but in the back there is a lounge and it has cozier nooks and crannies. There is an outdoor area, but with metal chairs, so not so nice on the bum when its nippy out. Still I like the place enough to go back. It’s especially nice because it is close to DCU.

The student bar in Dublin City University is never open beacuase there’s some wrangling between the university and the private operator of the bar or something. Anyway, the Slipper is currently the emergency headquarters of DCU’s boozing corps. It has all the atmos of an evening spent in a carpark with a 2 litre bottle of Linden Village, but in the absence of anywhere better to set up camp, the troops huddle over their pints of Fosters and make do as best they can. There are student specials where you get a pub grub lunch and a pint(Fosters) for a tenner or so, which is nice, if you have the will power to go back to college afterwards. Watch out for the seating arrangements etiquette: friendly natives drink in the bar and the student blow-ins keep out of the way in the lounge.
