I was staying in the hotel, and the afternoon tea here seemed like The Place To Be, so we managed a last minute slot for tea 1pm. The atmosphere is nice and airy, as during to its name. As it happens, it was a rare sunny weekend in Dublin, so better still. Service was absolutely nothing to complain about, but you’d expect that for an expensive hotel afternoon tea. The armchair/bench seats are strangely low and not that comfortable for me, so I can’t imagine how it is for taller people. Request one of the proper tables, I suppose. Basically, it’s just too expensive for what it is. The quality of the food is not bad, but nothing extraordinary, so you’re paying for two hours(max!) in a pretty setting. I’ve had much tastier scones at £10 coffeeshop cream teas. Recommended for ladies who lunch and want daytime prosecco with an exclusive feel.

I went here for afternoon tea with a large group on Sunday. I had the traditional tea with prosecco while my companions all had the peculiar tea with the mojito. They are very generous with mojito top-ups so don’t drive. The staff was very nice and the tea was lovely. The room is bright and airy and the seats were comfortable but not awkwardly low as can be the case with some teas. The pastries were all delicious. My only complaint is that normally the teas I’ve been to offer a top-up on sandwiches(my favourite part of the tea) and either because of the size of my group, or the policy of the restaurant, there were no extra sandwiches given. If you have a Saturday or Sunday afternoon free and want to feel pampered, this is the place to go.

A Most Peculiar Afternoon Tea… they had me at ‘peculiar’. Actually, they had me at «Victorian Mojito». Yes, mojitos for an afternoon tea bring the stuffiness factor down by several notches. The Atrium Lounge is on the third level of the Westin Hotel. Head upstairs and you’ll not know what hit you. It’s a far cry from the Mint Bar on the basement level. As soon as you get to the top you’ll be washed in an abundance of natural light. What a setting! Look up at the rows of windows and you’ll see what I mean. The ambiance is beautiful — gorgeous chairs in intimate settings for a small group of girlfriends or a mother-daughter outing or a romantic toast with your partner. Now, the sips and eats… There is a traditional afternoon tea; but, I’m reeled in by the idea of a ‘peculiar tea’. We kicked it off with rose prosecco and then came the treats in the form of perfect litte bites: pork cheek, prawn cocktail, spiced roast beef, smoked Irish salmon and caviar, sundried tomato tapenade, banana honey bread, popcorn panna cotta(!) and chocolate caramel seasalt brownies! Then to top it all off: a teapot filled with a Victorian version of a Caribbean mojito made from Hendrick’s Gin. And, it was absoloutely fantastic! This has to be the best tea in town! Book well in advance as the room fills up quickly. And, if you’re going on a date, try to get one of the corner tables for two. They’re a bit more private and romantic and one can sink, slide, and slither into the big comfy chair without barely being noticed after a couple cups of mojito and a glass of prosecco. Ahhh, me likey…
