This place totally gets 5 stars, sure the owner John is completely bonkers. The store(and street outside) is full to bursting with crap. I’d just love to see how messy and disorganised his tax returns must be. You wouldn’t line a rabbits hutch with some of his tatty newspapers. Its the most wonderfully eccentric newsagents i’ve ever encountered. You’ll either love it or hate it. Personally, i love it & find the place hilarious. Its open 24 hours. So if you need bread or milk or whatever at some ungodly hour and you dont fancy shouting through a petrol station hatch its perfect. P. S. Look out for the really wonky hand written signs outside which proudly state, «we sell yesterdays newspapers. Today» or maybe you might fancy a «half price easter egg» in July!

Open late, very late, I have bought stuff there at 3am. The place is strange, it feels like there are about 10,000 different products crammed into an area the size of a Landrover. And there are newspapers from every far flung corner of the country/world flung far around the shop… Strange place, but convenient at those odd hours of the morning.

Newspapers are piled up every where — if you are up to a week late buying a particular newspaper you can buy it here. newspapers that you are generally unable to get you can get here. Best of all they open about 5.30 in the morning which is handy if you have run out of cigarettes… I really must give up. I noticed that they sell papers from all the different Counties. Very friendly staff and able to have a chat if you have the time.

Nah I’m sorry but the name is simply not going to drag me away from Alex’s even though Alex’s isn’t exactly the shining example of Corner Shop perfection… I just don’t like this places attitude from the outset. the name puts me off. «The» Last corner shop could have given it a sort of Hollywood feel… but to say that they are the last… hmmm… i dunno… I don’t know why but I’m just not going to shop here. probably ever. and i cant figure out why… How strange

Right, you probably need to know a little local history to fully appreciate this place… On the outside the shop looks like it has been there for years and has that chaotic and bedraggled look of a place that has simply evolved into what it is through eons of additions. The truth is much more interesting. There has been a shop in DL for years called Alexes — the lucky lotto shop– run by a guy named John Highland. John lived and breathed the business to the degree where it was open 24 hours a day and I’ll swear he was there 22 of those hours. Alexes is still there but john sold up a few years back, then missed the biz I guess because he opened this place — though he’s taking it easier these days, it’s only open 21 hours a day… seriously. The selection of papers and magazines is truly astonishing, as indeed it the shops owner!

I’m gonna be honest, my loyalty to Alex’s across the road is so intense that I can’t even pretend to be impartial. Sorry, it’s just not as good. And they spell Dun Laoghaire wrong, «Dun Leary» sounds like a codename for some sort of social deviant.
