It is old fashioned quite dated BUT there is something about shopping in here that is like stepping back in time but without the good service. I tend to skip the clothes on the ground floor and head downstairs for linen, bedding, cushions and other things for the home. This is the only place I can think of where you can still buy wool and knitting needles. So an old fashioned Department Store but with a certain charm.

Shaws really does feel like a country town department store, with its tatty grubby carpets and dowdy décor. Each section offers a very limited range of clothing from different High Street brands that all have massive outlets of their own in the city centre and even in Bloomfields or Dun Laoghaire shopping centre, which makes the whole concept of Shaws obsolete, especially in the context of In modern Dublin where we have increasingly come to expect flashy shopping centres like Dundrum or Jervis, But Shaws have been serving Irish customers since 1864, and remains especially popular with older clientele, who have been loyal to the place since they were young ones.

Shaws department stores have a surprising fifteen outlets across Ireland and this is their only one in Dublin. Shaws stock lots of top high-street brands like Levis, Topshop, Wrangler, Wallis and Warehouse. Speaking for this store only, that means they have a broad range of stock, but limitations of shop size means that the range is not very extensive. I would say this formula is great for smaller towns down in the stix but with so many other options, including full blown shops for each brand they stock, the idea doesn’t seem so good in Dublin. Still, a great place for the staple items and they have a great discount section in the basement for household linens and stuff that’s well worth a rummage.
