Where every Tramorian learnt to swim. Lessons are held every summer at high tide: tiddlers in arm-bands start at the first steps, and graduate to further steps along the pier as they grow. The west side is bordered by a high buffer wall, and the lower eastern wall is the frontier between the pier and the slippery seaweedy rocks and rock pools beyond. You’ll often see kids(of all ages) in wellies with buckets gathering limpets or frightening rock-crabs. The pier is the home to the town’s lifeboat, and even houses the odd rowing boat and dinghy. Worth a visit during the summer to see the quaint system of swimming and life-saving lessons, or any time if seaweed is your thing.
