When in Kobe, Japan, one expects to have Kobe beef, not French food. My understanding, though, is that French food is pretty popular in Japan. On a late afternoon in December I was wandering through the Kitano District when I came upon Bistrot Café de Paris. It looked like a good place to grab some food and drink and watch the world go by for a little while. The weather was lovely so I sat on the terrace. I had the set lunch with a steak for 2500 yen. The lunch came with a salad, pumpkin soup, French bread, a good-sized steak, vegetables, and tea or coffee. The salad was fresh. I wasn’t sure about the pumpkin soup. It was served warm, was smooth, and had a bit of sweetness to it. I ended up enjoying it. Overall the meal was done well. I had no room for dessert but if I did I would have gone for the crème brûlée. The Kitano District is on a hill. As a result, businesses tend to have steps or stairs to deal with the elevation changes. The Bistrot Café de Paris was no exception. One of the waiters was kind enough to give me a hand as I struggled up and down the steps. The City Loop bus has a couple of stops close by. It is also easy to flag a taxi as many patrol the area. If you are able to walk a bit, the herb garden and ropeway are not too far away, and Shin-Kobe is just beyond that.
