I was a bit saddened by Kyotofu closing in the city. Happened way too soon, way before my appreciation of tofu dishes grew. But after sampling the best tofu side dishes of my life on this trip, I knew I had to treat myself to one tofu focused meal before heading home. What better city to find one than in Kyoto? My husband and I were pressed on time to catch our train back to Tokyo — so we decided to go with the set menu, no brainer, just feed us! My husband and I each ordered a different set menu — mine was the autumn special, his was the premium special. Each set consisted of 7 – 9 courses. Perfect presentation, perfect timing — every single time. My husband had an additional course or two — they knew to combine some of the courses onto one plate so I was never left alone watching him eat. My personal favorites — the butternut squash tofu soup(smooth and creamy), tofu hamburger in mushroom sauce(taste like meat, are you sure this is tofu?) tofu spring roll(ooey, gooey centered), tofu soufflé roll(perfectly sweetened) — who knew tofu could be so dynamic and be eaten in so many magical ways? Not that I am a big meat eater to begin with but this meal allowed me to appreciate the range of vegetarian dishes I can have without the need to have meat for every meal. Was I able to convince my husband the same? Not so much. but he did enjoy the myriad of tofu courses! Definitely recommend checking out Kyotofu to sample some of the best tofu dishes one would have in life!

We happened upon this place by recommendation of our concierge at New Miyako Hotel. Great great place. had to wait about ½ hour for a table but well worth it. Great assortment of Kyoto’s famed tofu dishes such as oboro a freshly made soft tofu which was sooo scrumptious, small dishes of chilled tofu, sesame tofu and fried yuba sashimi, small salad with white tofu dressing, hijiki seaweed with deep fried tofu, cooked rice with deep fried tofu and ginger and a great tofu dessert to top it off. Would recommend highly. is on the 11th floor above the Kyoto station among many other eateries.
