Okochi Sanso Villa was one of my favorite attractions in Kyoto. The admission is a little pricey, but I’d say it’s worth it. It also includes free high-grade green tea and a little snack.
Just off the western side of the bamboo grove, this garden is huge and beautiful. There are various high spots within this area where you can observe awesome views of Kyoto city, the nearby mountain ranges, and other land marks.

A fantastic escape
Walking in the bamboo forests of Arashiyama, depending on the time of year, you may not be able to experience the sense of solitude you may come to expect by looking at pictures of Kyoto. Okochi Sanso offers that.
It was opened by Denjiro Okochi, a period actor featured in a lot of samurai films. It features a number of gardens and a teahouse. A small snack and tea are included in the admission fee, which is around 1000 yen per person. There are some pretty breathtaking views of Kyoto which can be particularly striking if you go during the fall season.
It’s a short stroll from Tenryuji Temple and the Sagano Scenic Railway.
