There is a superb Oyakodon restaurant in Nishijin area.(Oyako means a parent and a child. Oyako don is a rice bowl with egg and chicken. Japanese have a sense of humor, don’t they?) I guess this place is worth to visit although it is located in center of residential area. There are 3 reasons to visit this place. 1. Buildings The restaurant is a very old beautiful Japanese building. The staff encourages patrons to find their seats right away after getting to the restaurant so they can get their orders as quickly as they want. You may take care of your photo at the restaurant later when you leave. 2. You don’t need to speak Japanese They will serve you Oyakodon automatically after you have found your seat. After eating, just pay 900 yen at the exit before you leave. Simple, isn’t it? 3. Oyakodon It is a nice bowl with a cup of chicken soup. Its portion is not so big though. I don’t know why but all oyakodon in Kyoto I have tried were slightly salty and this one is also salty but it is still awesomely tasty. They serve Oyakodon only during lunch time from 12AM to 2PM. For dinner time, you can have ‘Mizutaki’(Chicken Nabe) which I haven’t tried yet. Please share your dining experience if you happen to eat there at night! I really want to know how different the ambience is between lunch and dinner.

I heard this Japanese restaurant’s rumor, I came here. As I thought customers formed a line in front of the restaurant, but I happened to enter without waiting. I tried to take a picture of the outward appearance, and just the time a couple of former customers was leaving the restaurant and tried to take a picture. So I talked to them if I would take a picture of both of you. They were from Taiwan and we communicated in English. After that they were absorbed in taking pictures of the outward appearance, I forgot to take a picture of it. It was regrettable because of tasteful old Japanese building. It looked like an old Japanese small inn. I walked a narrow and short path to the entrance hall and took off my shoes before entering the restaurant. At lunch time mainly it provided Oyakodon, or a bowl of hot rice with cooked egg and chicken topped over it. The customers having Oyakodon were taken to the second floor. I walked a wooden corridor while watching a small greenery garden called Tsuboniwa, a typical Japanese garden in old machiya-style house. I went up narrow and steep stairs and sat down in Seiza position in a Tatami mat room. It is not a large room, but other customers were in. Among them some were Chinese. Probably this restaurant has many foreign customers. I review the dish, Taste: When I first saw the yolk of the egg, I thought it was excellent. The balance of egg, chicken and hot rice was also good. I had authentic Oyakodon here. A soup made of chicken soup stock was served, but it was a little mysterious taste that I have never had before. It is difficult to explain in detail. Price: It costs 900 yen including tax. It seemed to be a little expensive as Oyakodon, but they were particular about ingredients, so I thought it appropriate. I was satisfied with its atmosphere and food, but a restroom is narrow and tiny, in addition it is on the first floor. So if you want to enter the rest room, it is recommended when you check out.
