Dropped in for a bite to eat at 4pm and waitress gave us a menu that said breakfast served till 12pm and half of the menu was breakfast items. When she returned to ask what we wanted, we said nothing because half the menu ended at noon she said «works for me!» 2 other tables had pizza on them. No idea where that was on the menu. WILL NOT RETURN!!! Waitress was very cranky!

We have gone to this restaurant over the years and the food both in quality and portions have changed for the worst.
they must have got a new chef because the breakfast eggs came cold and runny when ordered over hard.
They did not have the usual rye toast.
the bacon or sausage came cold.
Coffee slow to come.
They have children or teenagers helping them serve so serving is not professional.
Not much reason to go back. Sorry

Hmmm, I find myself wanting to rate the Hook and Ladder higher (although I’m not sure why) but all in all I think it was a bit underwhelming.
It is a fire fighter theme which is taken a bit too far with toy firetrucks all over and helmets as lamp shades. It was dark and empty (at lunch time) although Bala is pretty deserted this time of year. The waitresses were not overly friendly but also were not unfriendly. The Manager or Owner is a bit of a distraction when you are eating in the empty restaurant because not to be mean but her voice is one of a women who has smoked many cigarettes and she talks quite loudly among her staff.
The food however was good, I got chicken fingers which were just as I expected and their soup of the day which was actually really good! It was a tomato basil which at first just kinda tasted like pasta sauce but in a soup texture… but after a few spoonfuls it really grew on me and it was clearly home made which I appreciated!

Stopped in on a motorcycle trip through the area … excellent service, and the vat of poutine they served us as an appetizer was tasty as all get-​out.

If you like firefighters thats the place to go! Huge collection of firefighter collectables. Big portions and nice staff.

I was in Bala, ON on a Monday morning, and Hook and Ladder was bustling even though most of the tourists had left. I ate an excellent omelet there and the home fries were delicious.
It’s a firefighter-​themed restaurant, but mostly I enjoyed the food and even though it was understaffed for half an hour, the owner/​waitress/​cook went into overdrive and took care of seven tables by herself! Impressive.
If you are in Bala, and want to eat a tasty breakfast, head on over here. I was impressed by the food, friendliness and work ethic of the staff and the fact that it was packed with locals.
