My favourite place to shop for vinyl! Definitely worth the trip to Bedford, there is something here for everyone: rock, pop, motown, country, classical, soundtracks, etc. I’ve even bought recordings of comics like George Carlin here in the past. They also have a large collection of CDs and DVDs, and every time I go I walk away with some amazing deals. The owner is friendly and helpful, and if you’re looking to get rid of any of your old music or movies, he’ll take them off your hands for cash or store credit(store credit seems like the way to go in most cases, since he tends to be more generous with that than cash). As Adam B. mentioned, he brings his dog to work with him, she usually lounges on the floor in one of the aisles(which isn’t really a problem as she seems friendly enough and is usually eager for a quick pat as you walk by).

This is a treasure of a shop, loaded with low-lying records and eye-level CDs. It’s located out of the way for Halifax dwellers, but can be a fun little adventure out to Bedford if you’re itching to get your hands on some new vinyl. The selection is really great, with most records being of the previously loved variety. There is a small assortment of new stuff, but the older goods are really where it’s at. The shop is tiny and crammed with goodness, and is super fun to peruse. When I was there last, Andrew and I picked up a new Serge Gainsbourg album, along with a Bessy Smith record — not to mention the Osmonds«Crazy Horses»(check out the video on youtube). If you’re looking for a little record shop with that big city vibe then this is the place for you. Hop the bus and head on a little jaunt out to Bedford for some sweet vinyl gems.

Select Sounds is tucked away in a strip mall in downtown Bedford, a pretty awful location for a pretty great little shop. Over the years I’ve collected a lot of great music from Select Sounds. The prices are reasonable(even for the more rare albums) and the owner is friendly and often eager to discuss your purchases and make suggestions. The store itself is very cramped and searching through the vinyl collection can be hard on your knees because it is all located on the floor. CDs are stored directly above the vinyl, so this can make for some occasional uncomfortable angling to get that gem you see stashed in the back. The store has a mascot as well, a generally friendly dog often is found sleeping towards the back of the store. Usually he is fine, but on occasion he will bark and bark… and bark… and bark… and you will leave the store because it can get a little tedious. Maybe he just doesn’t like your taste in music? Overall, Select Sounds is a great shop with a lot of treasures to be discovered. Check it out the next time you’re in Nova Scotia’s Traditional Stopping Place.
