I’ve actually never taken the ferry to Bowen Island before but we have moored at the marina a few times now and a short walk up the hill brings you to a little village with shops. This cold beer and wine store actually has a great selection of craft beers. And although it’s on an island, the prices are quite competitive. Last year, while most bottles of Driftwood’s Sartori Harvest were sold out on the Lower Mainland, this gem was stocked. One extremely cold evening, my partner and I had finished our stock of beers. Wanting to share another, we called the store first to see if they were open at 9pm. I assumed it would be closed since it’s a small quiet town. On the contrary, they open until after the last ferry! Apparently many commuters drop by on their way home. We carefully step out of our sailboat trying not to slip on the frost and make our way to the store. Greeted by pleasant staff, we made our selection and happily made our way back. Next time we plan to sail to Bowen Island, we’re not going to bother weighing down the boat with beers. We’ll just stock up once we get there.

Wine tasting, specialty beverages, and general information about Bowen and what’s happening on the island – drop in, and talk to Paul or any of the staff! In support of BowFeast 2010, Bowen’s celebration of all the edibles produced or sold on the island, several BC-made wines were on offer. The wine that actually made it back to our house was Dirty Laundry’s Hush, a lush rosé absolutely perfect for sipping on the deck while noshing on fresh fruit and enjoying the view of Howe Sound in the warm early evening breeze. BC has some really amazing wines, and I’m really pleased that I got to sample them here on Bowen, instead of having to travel to the Okanagan or the Fraser Valley!
