Great food and great service! My brother and I came here after we saw the line up at Anton’s(the original plan) and got the duct confit sliders and chicken wings to share along with the short rib and lemongrass beef dishes. All delicious stuff! I especially loved their garlic butter chicken wings: one of the best things that I’ve tasted. And our server was wonderful. He was very on top of everything and considerate. Would definitely come back!

Overrated. There is a reason why you never see Vietnamese people eating here… tasteless broth and smaller portions at a higher price for phở. I’ve given this place a second and third chance to redeem itself but it is always disappointing. I’ve tried the satay, bun bo hue, lemongrass chicken, fresh salad rolls and Vietnamese coffee. The satay was not spicy at all. All the things you expect from a satay was not there… the broth was too thick and didn’t have much flavour, the coconut and peanut were not present but it looked like peanut sauce… it was so tasteless I didn’t even both finishing half the bowl and I ALWAYS finish my phở. The bun bo hue was even more disappointing, again no flavour, no spice. When you use the word spicy in the description it should be more than just oil shitting on the top of my broth… no lemongrass flavour… again just not worth $ 11. I should also mention the portion is smaller. The lemongrass chicken and spring rolls were the only things I ordered here that were decent. Although $ 7.50 for spring rolls is more than any other place I’ve been to… Overall, this place is overrated so don’t fall for the hype! And if you do end up here stick with the rice dishes bc the phở will not satisfy your craving :(There is a phở place just across the street that has better broth and cheaper.

One of the most unprofessional establishment I have been to, very poor customer service it’s like you’re invisible on the table. And the staff are unapologetic at all, as for the food nothing special and a bit over priced. People who sat down after us, got served, fed and left way after us. There were only 2 inexperienced waitresses working in a full house restaurant. Bad experience. I will never come back.

Finally tried this place last night. We had driven all the way out here once before, only to find the place closed much earlier than their posted closing time. So this time we called ahead to check before making the drive out. The restaurant is bright, clean, and nicely decorated. It has a rather modern feel. We ordered Cassava fries to share, Deconstructed Phở for my friend, and House Vermicelli(with pork & prawn skewers) for me. The fries were wide cut and mushy soft on the inside, while still crispy on the outside. Loved the spices and dip that came with this dish. The Deconstructed Phở was quite interesting — it was basically phở without the soup, but with some sort of sauce instead. I tried a little of it. Both my friend and I felt the sauce was a tad too strong. Interesting concept, but we probably won’t get this dish again next time. The House Vermicelli consisted of vermicelli noodles served with pork & prawn skewers, a deep fried spring roll, some veggies, and the standard Vietnamese fish sauce. It was delicious! Overall, nice ambience, friendly service and good food. We’ll definitely be back again to try other items from their menu!

Had a quick in and out here. Ordered a nice soup and about ten bites in got a mouthful of broken scotch tape. Didn’t finish, certainly didn’t let them try again, and let them know we were finished with all my visits to this place. Mistakes happen — scotch tape in tripe isn’t one of them.

As a true lover of Vietnamese food, and having gone to a lot in the Vancouver area, this place is one of my faves! Definitely a little higher end and prices are a tad higher but I think it’s worth it. Vietnamese spring rolls were cooked to perfection :)

More of a 3.5 but since I can’t do that I’ll settle with the 3 stars. I wanted to get phở for dinner so I thought we’d be heading to Phở Don(my usual phở place) but my dad drove us to Broken Rice instead. We ordered the house phở and the coconut braised pork belly. The house phở was good. The broth wasn’t salty or oily, it was just the way we like it. There was also a very generous portion of meat which is always nice. As for the coconut braised pork belly, it was yummy but a little disappointing. First of all, I couldn’t taste any of the coconut. Second of all, by the time I was half way through my meal I was already sort of tired of the taste. The portions were generous and it was very yummy for the first few bites, but by the end of my meal I regretted not ordering the house phở as well. The service wasn’t very impressive, especially considering we were one of the three tables dining in. Wouldn’t mind coming in again, but for the price and stuff I’d rather just go to phở don.

I’ll give them 5 stars because I was really surprised to find such tasty food in a little hole on the wall. We came when they were not busy, so service was fast. The place is clean and they even put some effort into the décor(when you first get in, there’s a little«hut”-like area to wait for the host) . They serve you hot tea in a cute kettle and cute little mugs. Food came quickly, nice presentation and very flavourful. Price is reasonable. Overall, pleasant experience! Give them a try!

I came here with a group because I believe it was during the dine out period of this year. We all got the set menu which was delicious. This place was so good and the staff were so friendly we decided to come back and bring my father and law and his girlfriend. We ordered many things like the spring rolls, which I have to mention is made with rice paper which is the AUTHENTIC way to make it and MUCH crispier and tastier. Also ordered the chicken stuffed curry which was DELICIOUS, we also had the deconstructed phở which was wow. I don’t even know how to explain it. I went to Vietnam recently and I figured that everything here would be crap now in Vancouver, but Broken Rice really kicks it up a notch and its definitely one of my favorite restaurants. The only dish I didn’t like was the pancake dish. It was a bit too greasy for me but this isn’t to say it wasn’t good. I am not giving it 5 stars because the second time we came, the service was very slow, as our food came out slow. This won’t make me not go anymore though. I will still come whenever I am in the area for sure. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for some Vietnamese food, with a lil twist to it!

We came in on a Saturday night looking for a new restaurant to try. We’ve always been a fan of phở but we weren’t exactly sure what we were going to get from a slightly upper scaled Vietnamese restaurant. I was also slightly worried that the prices will be more elevated. I was first slightly surprised by the prices in the menu. For sure they were more expensive than our usual bowl of phở that we get elsewhere, but everything sounded so interesting and ‘fusion.’ We ultimately decided on starting wiith Uncle Hing’s Chicken Wings in Garlic Butter and sharing a Spicy Hue Lemongrass Noodle Soup and Pork Three Ways on Rice. At first bite, every dish we ordered was met with, «hmmm this is different. this is weird» but I promise you that upon your second bite you will be absorbed and addicted with the taste. My first bite or taste of each of the dishes we ordered was met with un-satisfaction as the tastes and flavours was different from what I’m accustomed to, but upon my second spoonful or bite into the dish I was absorbed and addicted to it. I highly recommend giving a try to this restaurant. We left feeling greatly surprised and confused with our new found addiction. I’m definitely excited to come back and try other dishes!

The place is very nice and modern, not the same as other Vietnamese places. I had the pork three way. It was really good and tasty. It had the right flavour, not too salty or overpowering. The service was quick and friendly. The price is a little higher than other places but is worth it.

Nice clean modern place. We came here by accident, we wanted to for next door for ice cream but we realized we were hungrier then we thought so we decided to try this place out. Only one other table was inside the restaurant. We sat right in front, the windows were open which was really nice. My husband ordered Phở and I had vermicelli with bbq pork and spring rolls. All tasted great. My favorite was the skewers and spring roll was cooked right. Im not a big fan of phở soups but when my husband orders it I make sure to have a taste, he seemed to really enjoy it. I would defiantly come back. Service was also great.

My husband and I popped into this restaurant after reading all the great reviews and we weren’t disappointed! First thing we noticed right off the bat was the excellent customer service. Our server constantly re-filled our water glass, checked in on us now and then and was overall very attentive and friendly. We also ended up having dinner a bit late so we were finishing up our dinner past the closing time, yet they didn’t rush us and told us to take our time. It’s been awhile since we received such outstanding customer service. Moving onto food, I ordered the reconstructed phở and absolutely loved it. I’m so used to having phở with broth so I was a little hesitant about ordering this dish, but it was flavored so well that I would most likely order it again the next time we eat here. The restaurant itself is very clean with nice décor. Will definitely be coming back for more!

I am stuck on the tastebud crossroad with this one. Maybe their kitchen is propelled by modernization to appeal to our Canadian palette, one might argue, but some may casually call it fusion cuisine otherwise. Though, I am quite unconvinced it would be even half of the latter. Unique, yes, and very much. Yet the taste of comfort through Vietnamese dishes remains intact. Their beef noodle soup was a generous amount, but not too large. The fixtures of garnishes completes the variety of beef topped in the bowl. Vietnamese curry rarely caught my attention, often because most other restaurants serve them as either Thai or something that digress from their main specialty. But if you’re a Viet-food fanatic, take the chance to peruse their menu at Broken Rice; your saliva would find its way through the spaces of each word, and that excludes nothing short of the Curried Chicken Ballotine. It’s a warm atmosphere at Broken Rice, for dates or family gatherings. Customer service is fantastic. Their lunch menu specializes in what you may find as street-food inspired, and their dinner something fancier.

Starters are great! The mango salad, spring rolls and duck sliders are all amazing. Had the deconstructed phở as a main and it was very disappointing. Tons of noodles and not a lot of flavour. The deep fried banana on coconut cream was good, but I think the ice cream is a better bet. Will come by again to try another main and the ice cream. Service was okay, but the décor makes this place stand out.

I don’t really like those common Kingsway vietnamese restaurants but I go sometimes when Hannah gets her hometown cravings lol. Broken Rice is so refreshing for Vietnamese food. We came here last week with the inlaws for a birthday dinner and I don’t think I’ve ever been to a nicer Vietnamese restaurant. The server speaks english fluently, and she’s actually polite and friendly. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the words«you’re welcome» in another Vietnamese restaurant, or Asian restaurant for that matter. They even came back and asked us how the food was. The tables are nicely set, you don’t have the stock holder in the middle with semi-clean chopsticks and spoons. They actually have your utensils rolled up in a napkin. Decoration is nice, they’ve got these large teapots on display on top of a pretty cool looking shrine/cabinet thing. I had the Chicken Clay pot, really good and nice and hot when it was served. I also shared the spring rolls with my sister in-law which I’m used to calling«roll dip» as per the Vinas in the mall food courts. My gf hates it when I call it that though hahahh The papaya salad was really good too not overpickled We will be back here especially after we move into the neighbourhood!

A fancy Vietnamese restaurant? Does that even exist in Greater Vancouver? Apparently it does. I was impressed by the amount of fancy here. Male servers in slacks and button up shirts, female server dressed in black skirt and fancy top. And above all, cloth napkins. Who would have thought you’d ever see cloth napkins at a Vietnamese restaurant? With most Vietnamese restaurants, you order your phở, wait a few minutes, scarf it down, pay and be on your way. I’m glad to see that my wife and I can go on a date and actually not feel so rushed. Like a western restaurant, Broken Rice breaks down your starters, mains and desserts. To start we had Uncle Hing’s Chicken Wings(tamarind sauce) and the Duck Confit Sliders, both of which were very good. I haven’t seen the tamarind wings done elsewhere before and the duck sliders were unique as well. Both were very good. The chicken wings were deep fried and drizzled with their tasty tamarind sauce. I feel like they were made fresh and they hadn’t been sitting around too long after they were pulled out from the fryer. The sliders came on a white, soft, Chinese style open face bun(aka bao), folded in half. The insides were a fusion between Chinese style duck with hoisin and green onion(like peking duck but not) and a Vietnamese banh mi. As much as I liked the appetizers, I think the mains were just average. I had the House Vermicelli, while my wife had the BBQ Beef Short Ribs. I feel like both these dishes could have been from any other restaurant. The House Vermicelli came with a chicken and pork skewer which was nicely grilled. However, I enjoyed the spring roll that came with my meal the best. They have good spring rolls. Service was exceptional here. The staff was friendly and attentive. They came over numerous times to make sure we were taken care of in terms of taking empty dishes away and ensuring our tea was always full. Sometimes you really do want to have a nice meal at a Vietnamese restaurant and you can’t do that at 99% of the other Vietnamese restaurants in town which often have flies buzzing around. Broken Rice allows you to do that. Even though you pay a bit of a premium, it’s nice to be able to come and take your time, enjoy your company, and even have a glass of wine if you so wish.

I was really hoping this place to be good, having heard many great things from relatives. Also had the impression that it would be sort of a «fine dining» Vietnamese experience but it was far from it. Perhaps it’s a bit cleaner than your average hole in the wall Kingsway joint, but the layout, ambiance and service are all the same — lackluster. But hey, I’m here for the food so lets get to that… Amongst the two of us we had the tamarind wings, beef carpaccio, cassava fries and bo bia rolls(which are spring rolls with Chinese sausage in the middle). Food wise, the portions are rather small for the price, but there is a large variety of traditional and fusion dishes which in my opinion is nice. The food itself though is average, nothing stood out or was memorable. The tamarind wings were a little on the over-salty side, beef carpaccio was average(their sauce was way too sweet and not enough flavor balance), the cassava fries tasted like the ones from Costco, but the bo bia was the highlight of the meal as it reminded me of eating them in Vietnam from street vendors. The service was a miss, the server who was working was probably an international student who was having some communication issues, but in the end we got our food. The restaurant was nearly empty when we came around dinner time on a Thursday, so yes this could be a nice date place.

LOVE this place! SO clean, décor is kind of fancy compared to other Vietnamese restaurants. And they serve fuzzy peaches as refreshments on your way out! Food was really good, in terms of authenticity obviously nothing compares to my mom’s cooking but it is not commercialized and gross like Phở Hoa chain restaurants. Came here at lunch time and there were lots of tables available. Unlike other Vietnamese restaurants we were served quickly and the food actually took time to be prepared not like the other reheated places like Phở Hoa. If you’re looking for a classier Vietnamese food joint this is the place!
