Perfect Restaurant for a Banana. Ok, so for those of you who don’t know a «Banana» is a Canadian born(or raised) Chinese person(yellow on the outside, white inside). I know, politically incorrect. But I am one so it’s ok for me to write this. My son and I stopped in on a Sunday at lunchtime. It took us a while to stop in to this restaurant because it is has a very underwhelming street presence, even a little sketchy looking… but appearances are deceiving. This place is really good! Menu: Chinese favourites, diner style dishes, good breaky choices, a smattering of Thai. Everything is very very reasonably priced. We ordered wonton noodle soup w/bbq pork, spring rolls, Heights burger, and Heights Chow Mein. We really enjoyed everything. Portions are on the large side, quality of food is way better than you would expect, Chinese food isn’t greasy, and no MSG(important for me, I’m allergic). Service: Cheerful and efficient, what more do you need for a casual meal? Ambiance: Old school booth seats, a little worn but gives the place a retro feel. Otherwise it’s a little«plain Jane»(ha ha) inside. Maybe not a place to come if you’ve got your fancy pants on though. Value: Amazing value for the quality of food. Location: Very convenient on the north side of Hastings 1 block west of the new Shoppers. Lots of parking in front and on the side street. You might miss it if you’re not looking for it though. This is a great place for a casual meal when you and your dining companions want different kinds of food. I saw an eggs benny pass by and it looked good, I will be having that next time, I think.

Jane’s has been taken over by new management and it’s a good thing. A new menu features a greater variety of south asian favourites as well as the traditional chinese-canadian diner fare of old. Even better, the couple now running the place are very accommodating and friendly. I recently went in at dinnertime with a large group of teenagers — 9 of us in the end — and they quickly set up tables so we could all sit together. Some of my party wanted breakfast items and instead of just saying they didn’t do breakfast after a certain time, they said they would need to start up the breakfast stove so it would take a little longer and they’d need to charge $ 1 extra per breakfast. A great compromise for us. They were true to their word and the breakfasts did come out later than the meals for those of us who ordered off the dinner menu. Getting half the meals earlier was a little awkward but everyone enjoyed their dinners and the bill, including tip was less than $ 100 for nine people. We’ll be back.

This place is great. Reasonable prices for their breakfast! The sausages were tasty and the potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The lady was really nice and brought fresh coffee which tasted great. They also have two types of hot sauce! Overall, this is a great breakfast joint. I will and have returned several times.

Been here a few times since the owners have taken over. Service and speed all deem to vary each visit. Some visits I get my food instantly some visits it takes a little longer for the food to arrive. Under the old ownership I came for the cheap breakfast. 2 eggs, 2 bacon/ham/sausage, hashbrowns and toast for $ 4.95. For the same thing it’s $ 5.95. Portions seem to vary each time I come. Sometimes they’ll skimp on the hash or just lightly butter my toast. I like consistency. Food doesn’t always arrive altogether. Service again, varies visit to visit. My cup of coffee is about half full and I haven’t had anyone come by asking for a top up. The table behind me just got offered theirs.

Good value breakfasts. Good coffee. Eggs were cooked well. Good service — friendly and fast. They have recently renovated and it looks much better — still has that old diner charm but much brighter and cleaner. I’d go again.

New owners. Not cheap and sleazy anymore. The décor doesn’t look like it was found in an alley. Good breakfast and carrot-ginger soup!

Their food is decent yet overpriced(unless you get breakfast), but their service is so bad that it doesn’t matter what their food is like in my opinion. The first time we ordered, our delivery guy yelled at us for not tipping him. I can understand being upset, but to voice your concern, especially in a rude manner, is unbelievable. We ended up tipping afterwards because we thought the food was good, and every time the delivery guy he never said a single word… extremely awkward and extremely rude. Furthermore, recently their website had no indication that they were under renovations, so we went far out of our way to get breakfast from there, but instead found it closed and we went elsewhere. They have currently reopened, but their online ordering and phone line is out of service so you are unable to order. Again, there is zero indication on their website about this. Jane’s has messed up our meal plans for the final time, and despite how good their food is, we won’t be visiting them again.

So I been craving for a big greasy breakfast and what better place than Jane’s. Apparently theyve changed owners. They no longer cook with trans fat and stopped using msg in their food. Breakfast have gone up in pricing past 2:30pm Will reserve judgement until next week when I try.

It’s a very Vancouveresq chinese food/greasy spoon diner. Has all the typical elements. Grilled cheese, trucker’s breakfasts basic drip coffee, fried rice, menus on the wall written in English and chinese characters, booths with ripped vinyl etc. Food meets my expectations for this kind of place. Nothing great but nothing that induced my gag reflex. Though, I had buttered whole wheat toast there once that tasted like friend won tons. A little unexpected and odd but I can’t say it was unpleasant.

I really like their food but the service is crap. Made an order for delivery & even though I wanted to pay on debit but it wasn’t an option. however I told them I still wanted the order. After 45 mins & no food I call to see where my order is only to be told they didn’t do debit & the order wasn’t placed. They then hung up the phone. Bad customer management.

Solid value for your buck at this Chinese Canadian greasy spoon. $ 5 breakfast … nothing fancy but really no complaints either. Service was good, portions were above average, and a homey atmosphere. Very pleased with my experience.

If you’re in the North Burnaby area, this is THE place to go for a yummy, cheap, all day breakfast. It’s basic but delish and a great deal! The place itself is nothing to write home about but who cares! The staff is always friendly and you can tell it’s beloved by the neighbourhood. I’ll miss it!

The breakfast is cheap. but you get what you pay for. not great but alright. Staff is freindly for sure and it’s very relaxed atmosphere. P. s. The young lady waitress I asume is the owners daughter, so polite, attentive, give her a tip she deserves it! Job well done!

I. LOVE. JANES! I cant believe I lived in Burnaby for soo long without knowing Janes was here too. Over the last 2 weeks, I swear to god we have spent almost $ 200 and ordered around 5 – 6 times lol(Its just one of those… months I guess, where we dont have the time or inclination to cook) Anyway, the reasons as to why I love Janes soo much: D 1. The food isn’t so greasy and doesn’t taste like everything has been cooked in reused cooking oil. 2. Delivery is FAST! within 30 minutes, food arrives hot and fresh! 3. The Almond chicken is the bomb. 4. The prices are REASONABLE(I start to sound like Sandra Bullock in 2 weeks notice( ) while placing my order 5. Generous heaping amounts, even a dinner for one is enough to have leftovers later. There are soo many other reasons to try Janes I just cant think of em all. Im planning on trying out their famous breakfast sometime soon too,(as soon as I get enough of their almond chicken maybe) Janes has been the answer to our prayers, as after moving to the lower mainland a few years ago it has been fairly difficult to find good chinese food. Downsides: –Only open six days a week(closed on sunday) –The sweet n sour pork sauce is a little too… tangy for our liking so we just ask for them to hold it… which would be Dry pork then? anyway, its great without the sauce — They aren’t open very late.

yes, surprisingly but considering the value, free wifi, and the old-fashioned booths from the 70s, i do like its low=pressure, approach. i can sit here for hours working lol. ordered their lunch special, honey garlic pork, tasty and good value for $ 7.95. too much rice even! lol good portion of veggies too. free parking all around. nice service.

Breakfast specials are where it’s at. Good price/quality/volume ratio’s. Interior is an old 80’s «Chinese Western» place. The pics say it all. Service was polite and functional. I’d stop in again for breakfast if I was in the hood. Would never do the Chinese food here ;)

I’m a breakfast kind of lady, I like to think I’m a breakfast connoisseur. This comes with the knowledge that sometimes a fairly priced breakfast can cancel out the fact that it is subpar. In this case that happened. I’ve been here previously and wasn’t blown away by their breakfast, but it is cheap(see how that works?) I’m not a huge fan I their potato styling, I prefer my hash browns shredded. We can’t have it all and this certainly did the job of feeding my belly and keeping my spending in check.

Chinese dinner for one #6: sweet & sour pork, beef chop suey(vegetables) and pork fried rice all for $ 8.95! (Not a chopstick master like myself? No worries — they put silverware on each table) ;)
