I was woken up at 4AM and tried to go back to sleep, but couldn’t. Finally at 6AM, I decided to head out for some food. Nothing close by was open and I didn’t want fast food, so I decided to go to Phở Hoa. Man… how I wish I ended up getting some Timmy’s or McDonalds instead. I ordered the #2 which was Phở with rare steak and beef brisket. The bowl of noodle soup came hot and the meat looked healthy. Wrong! Although it tasted fine at the time, an hour later, I had a tiny stomach ache. Two hours passed and the tiny stomach ache turns into raging pain. Ughh… don’t eat here. If you can’t keep something as simple as noodle soup clean, there’s something seriously wrong with the place.

I stopped by here on my way to metrotown and thought I would give it a try as I am still trying to find a Phở restaurant on KIingsway that will be my favourite. While this place was good, it was not great, and certainly not a ‘must visit’ kind of place. If you are looking for a decent broth with a good amount of meat, this would be a solid place to visit. I ordered a chicken ball phở(small) and there were plenty of balls, a nice sized ball of noodles, and the garnishes were fresh and crisp. The atmosphere is plain and green and the servers seem uninterested, but it wasn’t unpleasant; just lack-luster. The prices were good, but unfortunately for the couple in front of us, they learned the hard way that it’s better to pay in cash. It took them about 10 minutes just to get a debit/credit purchase made and I could see how tense they were getting. I was thankful to have brought a $ 20, so it was no problem for me. All in all, I’d say that if you were hungry late or happened to stumble in, you’d be full and happy, but if you’re looking for something special, best to keep on driving.

Good, standard noodle place. What I like is that when you walk in, you pretty much know what you’re going to get. A steaming bowl of rice noodles with assorted meats and a little plate of beansprouts to garnish. Doesn’t really matter which location you go to, it all is pretty much standard fare. Nothing spectacular. but when you need a sure thing. it hits the spot. Service is unmemorable. You sit down. they serve you tea. take your order. bring your food. There isn’t any. how are yous. please come again. it’s a phở house! What can you expect? It’s good enough. There’s a nice selection of stuff even if you don’t want noodles. One of the things I like about this place is that they have pictures at the top of the menu with the different options for meats in your noodles. This saves the newbies from getting a bowl of «What the heck?».

This used to be a go-to place for Phở as it is near my work place and right across Zumba! Sunday(Dec 2, 2012), we had lunch there and the brisket in phở had a GREENSHEEN to it! I asked what it was and the manager just brushed it off and said that this was completely normal. I don’t know about you guys but eating green meat is NOT normal to me. Long story short, they were not able to explain to me why green sheen in their meat is normal. They did not offer to replace this. I did not want to pay for the phở with the green meat. This seems reasonable as I was not able to eat it. Manager said that we had to pay for it and we can sue her after. LOL(I know. chill lady. a little overreaction there) Worst customer service ever and GREENMEAT guys. GREENMEAT!

It’s late, I’m in New West and I’ve just had a few drinks with the guys. We end up @ PH. We ordered 3 basic small bowls of phở. Portions are ok considering a sub $ 6 price but we could have done without the msg. Hey, it’s either here or Denny’s. 2 stars for the food +1 star for being 24 hours I guess they’re the 7 – 11 of Phở!

After stumbling back into south Burnaby after a rather unpleasant night of being stuck in another part of town we decided to try out this place expecting something warm and hearty to bring us back. What did we get? Crappy service, they kept pestering us about our order when we’d only been looking for a second and then disappeared so we had to wait 10 minutes after we actually knew what we wanted to order. I can believe we looked a little rough so they weren’t as friendly with us as they were with the construction workers that were being served, but what do they expect running a 24 hour restaurant? So finally we get to order, the food seemed to take forever to arrive, but this time I think my stomach was the major reason. We get our food and it looks alright. I dig in and find the broth is ridiculously bland, like, I almost can’t eat it and the noodles were chewy and stuck together. I finished about half of it very reluctantly and left still hungry. I wont go there again.

One can’t really expect much out of a phở chain restaurant; this Phở Hoa location is no exception. As you push your way through a pair of dirty doors and a miniature vestibule, you wait to be seated. If lucky, you’ll be greeted but chances are you’ll end up finding your own seat. There’s nothing extraordinary on the menu. If you’re a fan of Vietnamese Subs, they don’t have any! The broth is okay, nothing special. I wouldn’t call it bland but it was served hot and my rare steak cooked so that’s a good sign. Spring rolls had a different looking pastry to them but they tasted good. It was pleasing to me that they weren’t oily, dry or burnt. Service here could use a lot of work. I observed a group of three enter the restaurant, had to find their own seat and had to constantly looking for someone to take their order. It must have been at least 5 minutes before they were noticed. The servers were also rude and never in a good mood. Like the doors, the restaurant isn’t exactly clean either. What’s positive about this Phở Hoa is that they’re open 24 hours and that, in itself, is a blessing if you’re every craving a late night bowl of noodles.

I must admit, i normally only go here late at night, after a night of drinking since it is open 24 hrs. In an inebriated state, this place is amazing. I recently came here during the day, completely sober and I must say it was a bit disappointing. Not enough beef in the Phở, noodles were clumped together, and for some reason they were out of bean sprouts at the time. Saving grace was that a huge bowl of phở is cheap, under $ 10, and is pretty fast service, food came right away. Food wasn’t horrible, but not as good as I would have expected. Drunk = 5 star sober = 3 star

I grew up here, and this is home town. However, Vietnamese food way back when did not exist when Burnaby South was still on Kingsway. Delaney’s Pub existed then and exists now. So, Phở Hoa is the natural antidote to any liquor or brew that Delaney’s may want to throw at my stomach. Thank god(or is it God), because this restaurant is a pub-crawl away. Phở here is flavorful(or the Canadian way of spelling – flavourful), low-calorie soups with the choicest meats designed to absorb alcohol. The bowl of soup comes with fresh coriander leaves, sprouts, peppers, and other good things to ease that achie-breakie-stomach. The broths are usually steaming and greatly garnished and flavoured! As far as I can remember(before passing out) the food was fresh, with a crisp salad and spicy sauce. Great comfort food on a typical rainy Vancouver night. Give me another Canadian.

I like the fact that this place is 24 hours, nothing like some soup at 3 or 4am. But because the fact that it is part of a world wide chain, the food don’t seem to be 100% authentic. With that being said, the food is decent enough to have regularly. The service its not that great but fast none the less! I recommend you try the Beef Stew and Vermacelli, the beef broth for the soups are mediocre.

The phở broth is rather bland, and the beef dish is just average, bordering on unpalatable. There is too few slices of beef compared to other phở places. Service is noticeably absent and slow. There are much better phở places within 4 blocks radius. Most probably I would not be returning.

Having Phở on a rainy Vancouver night is definitely where it’s at. Hit up Phở Hoa on Sat afternoon when it was dreary and depressing and felt instantly better. A popular chain with 3 locations in Greater Vancouver is what it is. No frills, pretty basic interior with a real focus on forest green décor but boy can they make a mean bowl of soup. I have tried many Vietnamese restaurants but I am hard pressed to find a better one. Their broth is very rich and flavourful and you don’t have to squint to see the meat, it is plentiful. Lots of bean sprouts, basil and lime. The wait staff take your order and drop it off within 5 minutes but don’t expect a conversation, they are pretty reserved but very hard working. Loads of selection with a full 3 page menu. I pretty much stick with the same: Rare steak Phở with the complimentary hoison & hot sauce on the table. No complaints from this girl cuz I always know what to expect when I walk in the door and that is a good feeling. Hurray for Phở Hoa!

Competing for late night eats with Denny’s just up the block this place is usually pretty busy on weekend late nights. The décor leaves much to ask for, but then again who goes to a phở place expecting that? Phở Hoa is a North American chain and this place continues to offer all the same dishes, drinks and of course phở as the other places. Pretty standard fare but the thing that makes this place stand out a little more is they give you more time than the time it takes for you to sit down to ask you for your order. In addition they also employ a few girls that speak perfect English, so no more having to keep pointing and repeating yourself. Score!
