Up until about a year ago, I had never taken a dance class. I had always been interested in learning to swing dance(especially Lindy Hop). So finally one Friday I decided to put my insecurities aside and give it a shot. I was instantly hooked! Matt and Robin are really good instructors, and they teach the classes at a pace that allows for plenty of learning without leaving you feeling overwhelmed. They have YEARS of experience, and are a wealth of knowledge to help you along your way. The first Friday of every month, they have a different theme night, with a bar(hosted by Swing Dance Calgary) and live music. The live bands run the range from big band swing to gypsy jazz, and recently a rockabilly band. If you’ve never danced before, come on a Friday night. They have a beginner lesson which starts at 8:30PM and lasts 45 minutes. It teaches you all the fundamentals to get you started. From 9:15-midnight is a social dance, which gives you a chance to practice what you’ve learned in the lesson, and to also see some more advanced dancers strut their stuff. And if the beginner’s lessons leave you hungry for more(as I’m sure they will), classes are also offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings. if you’ve ever been curious what swing dance and culture is all about, then this is the place to be!

Yay for getting my swing fix on in Calgary! Toe Tappin’ offers weekly dances(complete with beginner’s lessons) and courses in lindy hop, balboa, charleston, jazz and vintage blues. Matt and Robin are welcoming and enthusiastic, with a great teaching style and the ability to teach you some great moves. It’s a welcoming community, that plays great music and has a great group of regulars attending the dances, who are always open to being asked for a dance. Between the good tunes, the company, and the fun of the dancing, there’s no way it feels like exercise(despite how many calories you’ll burn hourly). Especially fun are the special event dance nights, usually featuring out of town DJs, live music, or a theme. Everyone gets dolled up in vintage style and has a blast. Toe Tappin’ also brings in some pretty sweet guest instructors for workshop weekends every few months, for those who really want to boost their dancing skills. Definitely a place that gives me «Happy Feet»!
