Being on crutches for two months my world became very small. As in, walking one block was a really big deal and since there’s no liquor stores within a block from my house I was sadly booze-less on my(many) nights in. On a recent crutching expedition from work to physio, I passed by Zyn in Bankers Hall and decided I should probably have a cheap-ish bottle of red wine on hand at home to keep me company on my Netflix nights in. First of all, there are$ 20 and under white AND red wine sections! As soon as I started browsing I was offered assistance from the staff member behind the counter, who recommended a few options for me. I then remembered I probably didn’t have a wine bottle opener at my place and decided to grab a bottle with a screw cap. As an Aussie, this isn’t a big deal because most Australian wines have a screw cap — but I’ve noticed other countries haven’t really caught on yet and there’s a bit of cork snobbery going on. I think his soul died a little when I said I wanted a screw cap but I found one($ 15!) and went on my merry crutching way. And no, I didn’t go for Yellowtail. because no-one actually drinks that(except on planes).

I have to say that the service I experienced in my previous review has been completely opposite then the service I have been receiving lately. The staff were friendly, helpful and even suggested a new wine for me to try — which btw… was great!

I ordered a case of wine from here. Went to pick it up and they had opened the box from the bottom(???) and then folded the box flaps together. I paid for the case of wine($ 275) and took it out to my truck. When I got home, I grabbed the box and as I was walking up my walk, the bottom of the box gave way, and four of the six bottles smashed. I immediately called the store to tell them the tragedy, expecting them to help me out(a pretty easy write off for them). The manager was unwilling to help me at all, and basically said«not in my store, not my problem». The box should never have been opened, and especially not from the bottom. In my opinion, a smarter business decision would have been to help me out in some way, and solidify me as a long term customer; I would be very likely to continue to purchase $ 275+ cases of wine. Instead, I will never enter their store again, and have been telling everyone that I know downtown the story… their reactions have been that they will not shop there either now.

I was looking for a place downtown to buy wine that wasn’t…sketchy or crazy over-priced. The wine was for a gift and I wanted to make sure I had a decent selection to choose from. I was skeptical that there would be enough of a selection in my price point at this location, BECAUSE of the location but I was pleasantly surprised(Banker’s Hall can be a bit pricey I find). They have the wines arranged in sections, mostly by price. There is a cheap and cheerful section, a $ 20-$ 30 section, $ 30-$ 50 and so forth. They also have a big spender section(NOTME). They had a more than ample selection at each price point which was nice. The two sales ladies were quick to offer me assistance in a really friendly, non snobby way(also was a bit surprised about that given the location and how sales staff are in other Banker’s Hall stores). I didn’t want help but I overheard them later helping other patrons, asking really good questions to help steer them towards the right wine. I did find that it was sometimes hard to find the wine in the shelf rack below that went with the one on display above… bit of mix and match game going on. But nothing too tricky that I couldn’t get past. I noticed signs talking about a wine club too which sounded interesting(more info on their website) Whether you are looking for a $ 12 bottle to drink on a Friday night by yourself while you watch Bridget Jones’ Diary for the 800th time(not me) or for a $ 400 bottle of tequila(um, what? And no, not me), they have it.
