Have been planning on trying this place out for awhile now, and finally made it for supper with some friends. Service was decent, not excellent as we had to request water a few times and plates added up quickly. Food was great, came out at a reasonable time and was delicious! Lots of really good items that all of us enjoyed. Temperature was excellent with hot items, portion sizes were ideal and we managed to eat everything and avoid the overage charges. The only complaint was some items didn’t show up at all, so keep an eye on what you’re ordering because staff can be forgetful at times. Overall, great time!

Not bad but not great. Small tiny place with weird super market shelves to the side. Food was meh. Nothing to rave about but not gross. Won’t probably be back for a while if ever just because I didn’t feel like I got my bang for my buck. It’s a little too pricey for what they offer. Service was very fast though.

The previous reviews had me concerned about the service. Especially considering it was Friday evening at supper. The service was excellent. Lots of staff. Very attentive. And the food was quick. The portions are larger than I was expecting. So we over ordered. The overage charge was reasonable. There were a couple of dishes that we didn’t like. The teriyaki beef was very tasteless. And a couple of dishes we weren’t expecting spicy sauce. Overall a very good experience. We will be back.

Awful. They put mayo in their sushi. I’m not talking spicy mayo. Also the«chopped white tuna» is straight up canned tuna. I could go on, but you get the picture.

we go here all the time and make absolute pigs out of ourselves. not because it’s all-you-can eat but, being unfamiliar with their menu, it’s always a delightful surprise what we’re going to get. Like a kid in a fish-candy store. since it’s a flat rate + pay what you don’t eat, the staff pulled us aside and politely lectured us that we’ve ordered too much; they were right and saved us a ton of $. though I suspect, they still hold dishes back, waiting to see if we’ve got tuna coming out of ears or can handle more. everything was great. loved their teriyaki beef skewers. loved their California rolls. loved their tempura. I crave their tempura. staff is very polite + friendly and it’s a very inviting atmosphere. like I said, we go there all the time.

Good sushi– quite possibly the WORST service I have ever had. Didn’t attend our table for 10 minutes. We were 1 of 2 tables in the place. Didn’t clear any plates. Didn’t say hello or good bye. The food wasn’t bad, but people go out to eat for the experience and to get a bit pampered. Not asking for much, but a greeting or something would have been nice. They also screwed up our change when the bill came. I will now never go back to this place.

3.5÷5 So let’s start with the food — it’s why you’re coming, after all. The selection is huge and includes stuff I haven’t seen in many other restaurants in the city. It’s not just limited to Japanese food either; there’s some Chinese in there too(Hmmm… custard buns). The quality is, well, it‘s not amazing. It‘s not bad either. Overall, I‘d say it‘s just good with a few dishes falling on either end end of the spectrum. Service — bad service is usually why people don‘t return to restaurants, right? That’s not a concern here. Staff are very friendly and understanding. Very prompt(which I understand wasn’t always the case). Dishes come fast and furious as they’re prepared. Prices — I didn’t love the price. Only a weekend, it’s $ 24.99 so you’d better bring your appetite. Though, to be fair, if I got half as much food at any other sushi place as I did here, it’d be the same price. As for their«pay for what you don’t eat» policy, it makes sense to me — don’t be a glutton, people! You can order in several rounds. And, from my experience, as long as you make an honest effort to eat what you’ve ordered, you’ll be fine. Despite living relatively close by, I’ve only been a few times recently but I think I see myself going on a more regular basis.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for awhile now, and some bad reviews were weighing on my mind. A review about the A La Carte style charging on left over food, cold food and bad service don’t even seem like an option after my meal today. The server told us about the left over food charge in advance, and it was on the menu and selection paper multiple times, not an issue anyway because it was all gone :) The food was the perfect temperature! Hot enough to enjoy but not hot enough to burn me! The red curry is absolutely TODIEFOR!!! the sesame chicken was delicious, and the noodles were very good too! The presentation of the meal was great and everything glistened! They have utensils close by for those who aren’t talented enough to use chopsticks, and an awesome atmosphere. The menu and ordering paper was tricky to grasp at first but it’s pretty simple once you get the hang of it! The service itself was fast, and great. And the kitchen has no problem with keeping vegetables and garnish out of your dish if you don’t like that stuff :) Definitely coming back, and I recommend it to anyone else who isn’t sure if they should take the plunge! 5⁄5

This place keeps getting better. Not many restaurants continuously improve. This one does. Service, food, location. It’s five star worthy!!!

Poor service(slow, and they often bring you things you didn’t order, and insist that you did — I suspect it’s either they don’t pay attention, or they’re trying to fill you up on the cheap stuff so you have to pay for what you did order and can’t finish), appalling sticky washrooms which are definitely not to code, and all in all, a really good way to get food poisoning, which I did. Thanks so much Genji!

2.5−4ish The only thing about this place that remains consistent is its inconsistency! I’m not sure which number of new manager we’re on now, but the fact remains that the main problems Genji has have persisted since the grand opening. — Orders get mixed up and food forgotten — The washrooms and floors are disgusting — Service CAN be really terrible or pretty good — Food quality varies I love that they have added the option to eat lunch or dinner menu items whenever. There are items on the dinner menu that I really enjoy and I was often disappointed when we were only able to get lunch items. I also love the addition of dim sum and Thai items, it can make for a more well-rounded experience. You must try the steamed custard bun, it is the best I’ve had in the city! Just know that if you choose to order from the dim sum menu items that it takes a little longer to prepare — you know, with the steaming baskets and the not fast frying that goes on ;-) Unfortunately, they no longer seem to have a liquor licence so no sake or a simple beer with your meal. Not a huge deal, but some people prefer to visit a place where they can have a drink with their dinner. They have added quite a bit of decorative embellishments to the interior, in addition to some blinds and rearranged the seating a bit. It is very nice to look at in there, but they need to get on board with better cleaning practices. The system(or lack thereof) of bringing food out needs improvement. Yes, some of that onus is on us to order less at one time, and that is something we have picked up along the way, but there’s obviously no rush to get half my sushi order to me if we are still working on soup/salad. Just wait until it can all come at once. I try to keep an open mind, I have never made my own sushi(yet), maybe I’m missing something about the system that makes it easier to work this way, but it doesn’t seem very efficient as such. To go along with this, it is high time that they figure a proper system so that all of your order gets delivered. They have been in this game for awhile now, there’s no need for this to still be such a large issue. Please understand that I am not talking about the odd piece of something forgotten that can happen to anyone, I’m talking about consistently downgrading the amount of something I order. If I order 8 shrimp, it’s because we want 8 shrimp not whatever you feel like plating at the time. They have gotten rid of the shrimp skewers which makes me sad, but have dramatically improved the beef skewers so I’ve been getting that instead. The tempura shrimp quality had declined significantly the last visit. The pad thai was okay, but not fabulous. I did not enjoy the coconut shrimp at all, they were very soggy and lacked flavour. E decided to retry the rice because it states ‘small bowl’ now and was more pleased with it, it had far less onion and the smaller portion was a good size(I don’t like fried rice so he’s always stuck with it himself). This fusion attempt has got to stop somewhere. We’ve tried many of them on the menu, it’s in out habit to try something new each time we go(since it ISAYCE), but have only found one item we’ve really enjoyed, but it has been removed. We thought we got really lucky when we saw a banana and shrimp roll, but it turned out to be a deep fried banana — Yuck. I am always disappointed when managers or owners have no presence in their business. The man I have taken to be the manager previously took great pains to exit the curtain behind the sushi chefs and enter the curtain to the kitchen without having to be seen by people. To me, that exhibits a lack of pride in your reputation. I will say that the first manager/owner was always — ALWAYS — on the floor, he may not have appeared to be very approachable largely due to a breakdown in language, but he was there helping and working. This is no longer the case. Perhaps if he spent less time hiding he would see the ongoing issues and make an effort to rectify them. As I am not privy to their financial numbers I cannot say with exactness, but there was a time when we would visit and the place was extremely busy. We visit fairly often and the crowds never hit the size they once were anymore.

Hello Sushi Friends! I went for lunch here today and it was as awesome as it gets. I have eaten here a few times before, but today was the best. I do like sushi, it is my favourite food, and I have eaten sushi lunch in several restaurants in the metro area. What did I like about Genji today? A nice quiet table by the big picture window with pretty Japanese dishes. A friendly and polite host who seated me and made me feel comfortable. A considerate waitress who served me with ease. My appetizers were miso soup, seaweed salad, salmon teriyaki. My maki were chopped white tuna with green onion and tempura bits, and the second was pumpkin, yam, eggplant and green pepper roll. Both were delicious and hit the spot. I also had 2 scallops in tempura batter, and 2 grilled vegetarian dumplings, as well as 4 nigiri, salmon, red fish roe, green seaweed salad and spicy salmon. Nice lunch, eh? All my food was tasty. The hot food was hot. The dishes arrived as they were prepared. I received everything I ordered and it was exactly as described on the menu. They are really on their toes here. When I finished a dish, the waitress discretely took it away… to make more room) I liked the washroom too. The faucets have interesting spouts. There was a nice bottle of hand soap to use, a large glass potpourri and a pretty green plant sitting by the sink. The waitress offered me a discount for paying by cash, which I did. The lunch menu is extensive and includes many new items. I am looking forward to going back and ordering different dishes next time. In the meantime, I am going to go on a diet)

Well, we decided to try Sushi the other night at Genji Sushi, since they have the all you can eat buffet. Well, it is not the place to go if you haven’t experienced Sushi before! There’s an item on the menu that the waiter circled stating basically that you will be charged for what you don’t eat. I’ve eaten out quite a bit and have NEVER seen this on a menu before. Absolutely ridiculous! So much for«trying sushi.» Let me start by saying that at $ 23.95 for the dinner all you can eat + $ 1 extra just because it’s the weekend, this restaurant is overpriced for the quality of the food. And technically, if you don’t finish all of the food on your plate like a good kid, you’ll be charged $ 23.95 + $ 1.00 + the leftover food price! I’m not sure how this would work if we took kids here… we’d be paying for leftovers I guess! Service is quick, when you arrive. We ordered a few Teppanyaki dishes, which were served cold. These dishes are suppose to be served hot, but were luke warm at best. We did try some Sushi and the first items were good but then we ordered two dishes made with the seaweed wrap. It was an interesting experience… you couldn’t bite through them and they were too big to swallow whole. So we left 4(half of them) on our plate. It took about a half hour to actually get our bill. Nobody came back to check on us… I guess they were waiting to see if we would finish all of our meal before they billed us for the remaining food? Not sure. We had to request the bill in the end. The women’s bathroom is on an outside wall in this restaurant and was absolutely freezing. This was a «one timer» for us… we probably won’t be venturing here again.

Oh my goodness, I have been waiting to find a good AYCE sushi place since forever, and Genji is exactly what I’ve been looking for all this time. I was here with three other people with big appetites and for 18 $ each(Friday lunch rate) what we got was beyond awesome. And by the way, you do get 10% off if you pay in cash, which is also pretty great! Service was as good as anything we could ask for, all of our orders were brought to our table really quickly and not a thing was forgotten, despite us being there during a busy lunchtime. I’m now trying to remember everything we ate. We started off with appetizers: edamame(delicious), seaweed salad(pretty much the same as other restaurants, still good) spring rolls(blistering hot and very tasty) and mango salad(I would have preferred less dressing because mayo-ey things are not to my taste, but still amazing.) We followed that with California, cucumber, asparagus tempura, BBQ salmon, spicy salmon, and rainbow rolls. They were all very tasty(and asparagus tempura was divine) though a bit more fish on the rainbow roll would have been appreciated. We also had fried tofu(watery, not good at all, the one low point), hand rolls and fried bananas for dessert. Bananas were good, lighter than I thought they’d be, which was nice to round off the meal. Overall, I am in love with this place, and we didn’t even try any of the wok or dinner items! Yes, if you want exquisitely crafted gourmet sushi, you won’t find it here… But what they have at Genji is very, very good and quite sufficient to get your sushi fix. Looking forward to coming here with a larger group and trying even more of the menu!

If you’re going for quantity and don’t care about quality, you may find yourself liking this place. Went with a large group who shared everything so I had the opportunity to try a lot of their menu. The service was not great, because they put a seemingly inexperienced waitress on a table of 20+ and she was a little overwhelmed, receiving very little help from her coworkers in an otherwise slow restaurant. I felt horrible for her. She was rushing around and trying her best. Good for her. Reflects poorly on the restaurant though. NIGIRISUSHI — The nigiri features a 9:1 rice: fish ratio. There was so little fish on the nigiri that I couldn’t even really discern its quality. I’m sure the fish quality was ok, and I kind of expected this sort of trickery from an AYCE place. But this was a little over the top OKONOMIYAKI — I gotta say that I was really excited to see this rarity on the menu. I talked it up to those sitting around me once I ordered it and sort of raised their expectations. WHOOPS. I suspect the person who prepared this dish may have never seen or eaten it before. The ingredient ratio was pretty non-standard. For example, it was a fairly thin(and undercooked BTW) slab with a lumberjack’s fist worth of bonito on the top. Once I removed 90% of the bonito and could tell the thing was undercooked, my fellow diners sort of all made the same disgusted face. A few of them tried it politely since I had talked it up so much. I didn’t even like it. but I ate it anyway since I was the one who ordered. Huge disappointment. Avoid

Having newly joined the«I love Sushi» club, I decided to go to an all-you-can-eat sushi place with some guy friends to try out more sushi options. I first noticed this place while I my bus home from Uni and thought it was going to be like your typical buffet; variety of options, you serve yourself. It’s quite different. You enter, get seated and the waiter gives you a sheet of all the available sushi. Don’t worry, It’s not a few options; it’s every sushi you could think possible. You check off what you want and they BRINGYOUYOURSUSHI. But the menu doesn’t just have sushi! There’s salads, soups, noodles… yuuuuuuuummmmm My friends & I went on a wednesday afternoon, so it wasn’t busy and we got the lunch deal — which wasn’t expensive considering what we got in sushi. The waiter was very nice and explained how everything worked. The waitress however, was very abrupt. For example, she was going around filling water and as she was coming around my table I was sipping my water. «more water?» I nodded. I took the glass away from my lips and she immediately grabbed it out of my hand. Uh? ok? Whatever. The only downside on this place is that whatever you DON’T EAT. You get charged for. So keep an eye on the menu! Most of the sushi comes in packs of 4 or 6(not 1 like some of us would hope when trying new sushi). But I still give this place a high rating, the foods delicious and who doesn’t love a buffet where they bring it to you?

Overall the food was was not bad, not great but not terrible. The presentation was lacking and the edamame was by no means fresh. Service was prompt and friendly, however when I got my bill I noticed that I was charged 12.95 for the Hawaii roll, which on their menu is priced at 8.95. When I asked the manger why I was charged a higher price she just shrugged and said«Sometimes things go up…» I resent not being made aware of the price increase when I was ordering. I can understand a business having to increase the price of certain items but please take the time to update your menu or make customers aware. Do not just charge a higher price and assume that they won’t notice. I will be contacting the restaurant via Facebook and the Better Business Bureau which will hopefully resolve the issue.
