East of the Tracks on Whyte is seriously a gem of a place with several small businesses trying to make their mark on Edmonton. I was glad to partake in the offers that were made available through the passport to East Whyte on Unilocal. I went to every shop that took part in the Passport(except hardcore bikes) and at least took a peek at what they have. It was interesting to find so many nice establishments like Red Pony Consignment, Traveling Tickle Trunk, Alhambra books, Acoustic Shop and Wünderbar, that I hadn’t been to before. Flirt has always been loyal to Unilocal customers and I liked the offer they had. Certainly East of the Tracks is where you go for a bit of nuance, a bit of quiet, a bit of class, and yet a bit of humility; as a customer I am happy to live close to this part of town. Brittany organized this perfectly, from a über-kewl Elite event on a warm day at Wünderbar, to the Scavenger Hunt, which sounded so awesome, but sadly never took off in terms of Unilocalers participating! I also wish other business owners had shown interest in participating in this passport event. It was successful and fun for us Unilocalers too.

At first I thought I wouldn’t really use the passport that much. I’m pretty broke at the moment, so even with the sweet discounts I still can’t really afford anything. BUT, this passport introduced me to my new favorite bookstore, Alhambra Books. I am pretty speechless when it comes to this store, except for random outbursts of barely coherent excitement. I think this was a really cool idea, getting people to look at some of the businesses that are located in the less popular areas of Whyte.

So I admit I’m the type of person who thinks of Whyte Ave as extending from 109 Steet to Gateway Boulevard. The east side of Gateway doesn’t usually register with me. So I’m realyl glad Unilocal and some local businesses have put on the Passport to East Whyte Ave event. Yesterday I wandered to the east side of Whyte and found a bunch of really neat businesses I probably wouldn’t have seen before. This area of Whyte is quieter, less developed but there are some great gems here. If I wasn’t working all week long I’d come back and check some more things out.
