Food are good and service is also good. Overall is alright. The speed of food is bit slower than other typical Korean restaurant tho. Always bit disappointed with the speed of food arriving to the table.

Won Jung Gak claims their food to be Korean style Chinese cuisine. You’d be hard pressed to guess its a blend of two ethnicities as almost everyone in the restaurant was Korean. Seriously, everyone was Korean except our table and one of the waitresses. There were a few dishes that had a bit of Chinese influence but this is pretty much Korean all the way. Three of us came for dinner on a Wednesday evening and the place was bumping. Not a single table was empty, impressive given Won Jung Gak’s random, somewhat sketchy industrial location. I’ve only been to their Chinatown location previously, which is defunct, but now houses It’All. The outside may look off putting but the inside is quite nice with Kpop videos on loop and delicious Korean smells wafting through the room. The service is pretty weak, not even going to sugar coat it, as you’ll be constantly trying to eye or flag your waitress down to get a jug of water or a fill up of tea. Just expect that and move on. There is a call button on the table you can press for service but I’m not too confident if it works. The menu is pretty massive but you can focus on four areas: traditional Korean dishes, noodles, rice and meat(pork and chicken). Everyone seemed to be ordering noodles, a soup dish and deep fried chicken or pork. Order what your table neighbour is having and you’ll be golden. — Budaejjigae(I)($ 25.00) — spicy soup with tofu, kimchi, ham, sausage and ramen noodles. Came with two side bowls of rice and an extra bowl of spicy soup. I’ve had this dish several times and Won Jung’s was a bit disappointing. I like that they added spinach on top to give the dish some much needed extra vegetables. Same with the generous portion of tofu. Unfortunately, the soup was way too salty. Same with the sausage and ham. I know this dish is known as army stew but the salty factor was just too prominent for my taste buds. Lee House’s broth is much better. — JjamJjam — half and half(#13)($ 11.00) — half portions of jjajangmyeon(Korean black bean sauce with pork) and jjamppong(spicy soup with vegetables and squid). For $ 11, this dish is a steal, especially because you get to try two completely different types of noodles. The jjajangmyeon noodles had a nice elasticity to them but I wish the sauce was warmer when we ate it. It was lukewarm. Cue sad face. The black bean sauce was great as it wasn’t salty but had a slight sweetness to it. The jjamppong was my favourite. Spicy goodness with great noodles. It could have used more seafood but for the price, it was still worth it. Use the scissors! It’ll make scooping up noodles a breeze. — TangsuGi(#39)($ 20.00) — deep fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce. This was A and S’s favourite dish of the night. The chicken had a great batter and each bite was a crunchy, can I keep popping these in my mouth delight. Sauce wise, it was much sweeter than sour(honestly, didn’t get a hint of sour) and you could dip it into the side of black bean sauce if you wanted an added twist. The dish also had some vegetables(peppers, onion and tomato) and pineapple, which I’ve never seen in Korean cuisine before. I’m guessing that’s where the Chinese influence comes into play. Overall, Won Jung Gak is a pretty solid spot to grab Korean if you’re in the area. Seriously, I’ll never get over the fact that there’s so many places on the south side to get your Korean fix. Alas, I’m happy I tried the OG(always the best way) and prices are reasonable enough. Just be smart in what you order and you’ll be a happy camper. I’d give it 3.5 stars.

Hit up the handy Unilocal app when trying to decide on a southside place to get some good food at the last moment on a Saturday. This place popped up and was open so we headed over to it. Right off the bat, as I was visualizing the location via the address, I mentioned to my wife that this might be kinda off the beaten path — and turns out I was dead on. Being around 6 on a dark winter Saturday night, we found ourselves driving through an abandoned industrial wasteland. The streets were lined with closed warehouses and factories without a soul in site — complete darkness as everything was obviously closed. As we approached the address, sure enough there was a tiny bit of light breaking through the dark. Yup, this place is completely hidden — you won’t accidentally stumble upon it at night unless you are the type to just drive around industrial areas after closing(and hey, I’m not judging). Seriously, there is NOTHING around here, but this little gem. We got there just after 6ish and there was one table filled with folks and a lot of empty tables. The super friendly staff quickly sat us and let us go through the menu. Each table has a little button to press when you are ready to order or need some assistance — this was pretty cool. Now the food — all I can say is WOW! First off, the servings are HUGE(!!!). WE ordered a couple of menu items that had«(2)» next to them, which I assumed meant that the plate is for two people to share — but when they hauled these out to us each was enough for a quartet do dine on… and oh so tasty! We had a plate of glass noodles with shrimp and all kinds of veggies, and another plate of chicken with a kinda hot but sweet sauce, and both were so good… and soooo much. Needless to say, we ended up taking a large amount home for a complete other meal the next day. We ended up leaving just before 8:00pm and the place had slowly filled up by the time we left — I was amazed that this many people would venture into such and isolated location for a meal, but having enjoyed a feast there, I can now see why. Oh, and the best part was when they set a pair of scissors down on the table before the meal(along with a large variety of sides to go with the meal). I asked what this was for(perhaps there was something about a free haircut on the menu that i missed!?!) and the waiter just smiled and said it would be obvious. Of course, we then saw the other folks using the shears to cut the long noodles as they served themselves… duh. No free haircut for me, but a great meal none-the-less.

Like the other review mentioned, if you have ever been to other reputable well-reviewed Korean restaurant in a large city you will be disappointed here. This place is basically a poor excuse for a Korean joint in northern Alberta, where it is hard to come across anything else Korean. Pan Chan is very sad since it consists of 3 store bought and stale dishes. Potato panchan is old and you can easily taste that it is from the store. Bibimbap comes warm(not hot enough to crisp the rice) and the egg is pre cooked. It consists of 95% rice and then has mixed in stir fry frozen vegetables which were heated up. If you don’t believe me please refer to the picture. Bulgogi is ok but pretty much a combination of sugar and dirty dish water. The prices are at least 1.5x other places. Sort of a rip off when compared to at least 10 other restaurants. Service is subpar, when i asked why the bibimbap is almost fully made of rice, they told me that i dont know what a real bibimbap is, which is highly offensive since i have been to probably 60 or 70 korean restaurants world ride. they just want to get rid you since they are so busy. Save your money.

Andrew and I have been eating at Won Jung Gak regularly since we’ve met. To put it simply, it is casual, cheap, yummy, and oh my — Kpop bonanza! Won Jung Gak is more Korean-Chinese than it is traditional Korean. No matter, unless you are in the market for straight up Korean. I am, however, always in the market for yum — which WJG is. They’ve since reno’d their garage, and I must say they did a great job. It looks more warm and welcoming with the pumpkin orange color scheme and the ambient lighting. I have a couple of favorites on the menu: Jjamppong(spicy noodle soup) and Samseon udon(mild seafood udon). Portions are huuuuuuge. One of these can feed two grown adults. It’s priced very reasonably at $ 13 a bowl. Service is always pleasant, we are usually seated very quickly, and always given enough time and space to have conversation. The funky thing is they always play Korean pop music videos that makes the experience a little more fun. You don’t even have to ask me if I will be back. :)

Fantastic food. I had the split noodle bowl(jam ja myeon); ½ black bean sauce, ½ spicy soup. Portions were very good(although it looked small at first). Flavors very well balanced. Totally amazing; would recommend. Service was very quick and the atmosphere was very old school authentic.

This place is unreal! The best spicy ramen bowls, as well as other shared dishes. Price is very affordable and portions are big — great for a lunch or dinner with friends!

This place is the spot in Edmonton for authentic Korean-Chinese food(meaning Chinese food with a Korean influence). I have only visited with Koreans and they always order the same dishes: black bean sauce with noodles, spicy noodle and seafood soup, kampung yuk(sweet, sour, and spicy fried pork), and tang su yuk(sweet and sour friend pork). All of these dishes I would highly recommend! Some of the other things that make this place unique is that they show k-pop music videos on the TVs, there are buzzers at the tables to call servers, the staff are polite yet to the point, and they bring water in these particular plastic bottles — all of which are just like what I experienced in Korea. Don’t let the exterior fool you(it’s in an odd industrial area in a building that looks like a converted garage) and visit this restaurant!

Their Clay Pot(first thing on the menu) was unreal good. I’m stuffed — but already looking forward to having it again :) If you are in the area you should definitely add it to your list. My first time there today and really enjoyed it!

I’m a fan of Asian cuisine and as we rolled up to the industrial park I was hoping this would be a great little place. Let me say this exceeded all expectations. The onion cakes were delicious, the twice fried pork tenders has a sweet, spicy and sticky sauce but were so tender and my bulgogi beef with mushrooms in the clay pot were amazing. The prices seem a little high per dish until you see portion sizes. We could have easily split one dish and been fine but 2 dishes and the 2 of us were stuffed and had leftovers. Everything was tender, seasoned just right and so delicious. We will definitely be back.

I can’t believe I didn’t know about this little gem! I went to Won Jung Gak for the first time with a friend last week, and ordered the cold buckwheat noodle dish(mul naeng myun?). It was delicious! My friend ordered the jajangmyun, and I tried a bit of it — that was delicious, too, and I’ll be ordering that the next time I go. I’ve been to both Lee House and Gaya, and Won Jung Gak was leagues above Gaya, it doesn’t even compare. I think I like Lee House just as much, but it’s in an inconvenient location, so I will have to stick with Won Jung Gak as my go-to Korean restaurant.

Came here with a friend today for lunch. First impression was that it’s authentically Korean. I ordered a cham pong(seafood noodle soup). So spicy and delicious! The only thing that took away a star was the lack of seafood in the soup. There were only a couple of squid tentacles. The portion was generous though. Will definitely recommend this place and come back!

Went here on a Saturday evening with two other people. The place is in the industrial park with the restaurant exterior matches the area. The place looks better once you go inside. We ordered BulGoGi, a noodle dish #22, pork meatball dish and spicy fried chicken. Even though I’m not a big fan of spicy food, this is spicy but at the same time flavorful with a touch of sweetness. Delicious overall.

I tried this place on Monday, then went back Thursday of the same week. Both times, I got the bibim bap. It was my first time trying it, ever, and I loved it. The little sides are delicious, and I could eat just those and be happy. The chef must have noticed I was a newbi, because he sent out a few small dishes for me to try! The spicy pepper chicken was my favorite, to die for. He also sent out fried pork with a sauce, and some dumplings. They were amazing as well. I will definitely be going back!

This place had me dancing to Korean pop by the end of lunch! And if I had stayed longer I probably would of grabbed a comic book off the shelf and try my hand at some Hangul. If someone were to ask me for an authentic Korean restaurant I would definitely recommend this place. It’s a little tricky to get here because the surrounding environment is quite industrial. Save a Hangul sign and a cool looking devil on the door, you’d think it was a garage. Ordered the Bibimbap. Was perfect, stone bowl and all. Wouldn’t of changed a thing. A bit pricey, but I’d pay the premium here. I will say that some things on the menu appeared«odd» to my party. I believe the interpretation used was«this is basically spaghetti with sauce on it.» So I would ask about any cuisine that does not seem familiar to you. But the bibimbap was perfect.

I really enjoyed the noodles I had here. I’m not able to tell you what they were called cause I just told the lady I just wanted some tasty noodles, and that is exactly what I got! I would love to go back and try a few more dishes here.

I’ve been looking for some cheap and plentiful Korean food, and while this place isn’t dirt cheap, you get a ton of delicious food for the price you pay. $ 10 for a noodle dish that included a half portion of black bean sauce noodles along with noodles in a spicy soup base that had some veggies/seafood. Mmm. Another $ 20ish for a gigantic plate of deep fried chicken which I was skeptical about ordering at first… but my friend(who had been there once already) said it was REALLYGOOD, so we got it – it turned out to be amazing juicy and flavourful and I couldn’t stop eating more after I was filled to the brim. Still managed to take home a lot of leftovers. I’m looking forward to eating it. =P I can’t say for sure whether this is «authentic» Korean; others say it’s Chinese/Korean… but there were several Korean families eating in this complete hole-in-a-wall joint so I’m sure it’s gotta be authentic to some degree! The inside décor is surprisingly nice and different; I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. There are a LOT of tables, so this would be a great place to bring bigger groups as well without having to worry about waiting forever(I hope). Being in middle of nowhere also means there’s lots of parking. The only thing I wish this place had are more appetizers. We didn’t even get kimchi, but everything else about the place makes up for it.

Like a lot of great hole in the wall places, Won Jung Gak doesn’t look all that impressive from the outside. Inside, however, the place is nice, clean, and the servers and management are friendly. Also, for your dining pleasure, Won Jung seems to play K pop videos 24⁄7 that are hilarious and fun to watch. The servers are good– they’re friendly, fast and attentive(you rarely wait for your water jug to be refilled). The food is prepared fast as well and it has a home-style feel that is both authentic and delicious(not to mention their portion sizes are very generous). All your standards are done very well(Bibimbap, japchae, galbi) and they are more than happy to refill you on the side dishes(of which, there is more variety than just the standard kimchi offered at most Korean places). Definitely one of my favourite places to come for great satisfying meal.

After reading the review about this place I was on a mission that day. I’ve never had any Korean food before so I didn’t even know what I was in for. This place IS tucked in in a weird place and I wouldn’t look twice driving past but it’s inside is much more flattering then the outside. It has a very cute and humble look, red tables and chairs, a skinny hallway leading to the lime green bathrooms.(I laughed because being 5’10 and having to bend down and use the sink, never mind trying to look in the mirror.) Our waitress was awesome, being the only non-Koreans in there she was extremely helpful with the menu. We ordered some BBQ Short ribs, noodles in black bean sauce and some deep fried chicken in red pepper and garlic sauce. Right before our food came we got 3 small little«side» dishes. one had onions and pickled radish to dip in black bean sauce and she said the third was«something like kim chi». My favorite was the little yellow radishes, the«kim chi» didn’t really have too much flavor and the onion well. it was an onion. First was the chicken, a HEAPING plate of it. Seriously, the portions here were so outrageous. Then came our plate of noodles and then last but not least the delicious BBQ. Along with that she gave us a set of tongs and scissors which we were clueless at first but once we started digging in it made so much sense. Our waitress came back and offered to cut our short ribs because she wasn’t busy doing anything else. Can you even get better service then that? All she has to do is feed me now ! The chicken was cooked perfect, not too much batter and the spices tasted so fresh. All the flavors melded perfect and it all settled in with a sharp kick at the end. The noodles were a bit bland, there were small chunks of potato mixed in, I want to say sweet potatoe? But it was just okay, I think it would have been better with meat mixed in. And lastly the short ribs, so delicious! I’ve never had anything like it before. They were a bit tough so cutting them with the scissors worked awesome and I was in Korean BBQ heaven. The two of us barely dented all this food, there was over half of it left and it was only $ 53. Not too bad ! And to impress me more the chef came out and was greeting everyone and cutting someones ribs for them while making small talk. I will definitely be calling home about this one ! *Also to add, this place has a definitely Motoraunt feel to it if you ever got to experience that. Very cute, has books for reading, great friendly service.

Stop if me you’ve heard this saying: if the place you’re eating is someone’s garage, it’s probably damn good. Nestled in the heart of the industrial part of town, my friends and I stopped by to try some Korean cuisine. I literally spotted the restaurant because in the near pitch black of the night, I noticed an unlit Korean sign among warehouses so this had to be the place. My friends and I usually rate ethnic foods in terms of oddities such as, «the dirtier it looks, the tastier it is» or «if it’s like eating in someone’s kitchen, you know it’s good». Well, Won Jung Gok is literally someone’s garage with Korean posters hanging on the wall. It is an odd site to walk in and say to yourself, «You know what, this is going to be epic.» If you asked me what I ordered, I can’t pronounce it. Heck, the menu’s are black and white photocopies with Korean text and faded english translations underneath. We started off with a lettuce and cold cut pork dish with some sauce and peppers. Basically, it’s like the first dish of Peking duck if you’ve ever eaten that course: grab the salad, put some meat on it, roll it up, dip it, and you’ve got an Asian burrito. It tasted like going to Ronnie Kim’s mom’s house for dinner(or insert another Korean friend that you have). It tastes homemade and I think that’s why people like eating here so much. There’s no processed taste. You can taste the sincerity in every bite and I think that speaks volumes. The crispness of the leafy green lettuce leaves and the amount of pork meat you get reminds you of how your mom always ensures you’re eating a fresh and plentiful meal. The bulgogi was flavorful and the spiced pork or chicken or meat of some kinda was also good(Sorry, my friends ordered for me and we ate family style). I’m sure if you have some ounce of interest or feel like trying something new and exciting, why not give Korean food a chance? The waitresses all look like family and I’m sure they can recommend customers new to Korean food something safe yet bold to try. I would describe the food at Won Jung Gok in one word: charming.
