How I loathed the Dalhousie bookstore when I was a student. I resented having to wait in huge lines, check my bag at the door in case I was planning on stealing, and having to pay exorbitant prices for textbooks and literature. So I completely stopped frequenting this place, I bought my books used and avoided the cattle lines altogether. But yesterday, I found myself in the SUB right next door to the bookstore so decided to pop back in. There weren’t many people shopping, but quite a few working — none of whom greeted me, by the way. There was a table of $ 5 text books at the front of the store — older editions that once cost $ 100 now being sold for mere scraps — talk about a kick to the face if you’d dished out huge dollars a year or two prior. There was a lot of Dal apparel, water bottles and even organic lotions and soaps on sale. I bopped around and checked out there stationary section, which housed a pretty good selection of sustainable paper and notebooks, plus some neat new pencils that are earth-friendly. I suppose I’m still jaded from my days as a student, but I’ll reluctantly admit that there are some good products for sale at the Dal bookstore. You could probably find everything they sell cheaper elsewhere, but if in a pinch and on campus, it is pretty well stocked place to pick up school supplies.
