My girlfriend and I have been here a few times everytime we get good fast service. Food is great!

Fong Sing has been a fixture in a Clayton Park strip mall for 20 years. When they first opened in the mid 90s they were a refreshing change to the sea of pizza and donairs places. The owners are Vietnamese I believe and I had my first phở soup here. I haven’t had anything other than phở for years but a friend mentioned how much he liked their Vietnamese bun(or noodles) so I decided to try one for lunch. I quickly checked the Fong Sing website and decided on the pork bun. They moved sometime in past few months to a location directly opposite their old one and are close to the women’s only Goodlife. The old location was showing its age so it was nice to see fresh furniture and paint. The person working at the counter took my order and said it would be 20 minutes to grill the pork. I paid my $ 14 and change after tax. I got it to go. I appreciate that they make the order fresh so didn’t mind the wait. I busied myself with some errands and swung back close to 20 minutes later. True to her word the waitress had my order waiting when I returned. I flipped open the take out container and tucked in as I drove to next appointment. It looked pretty appetizing with the cut up pork cutlet resting on a bed of vermicelli. The pork was tender and topped with some carmelized onions. No complaints there. I poked around with a chopstick and noticed some green underneath. Looking good so far. I mixed it all up and gave it another taste. Unfortunately it was pretty bland… where was the basil, cilantro or other herbs? When eaten together the bland noodles and lettuce smothered the pork cutlet. On further examination the vegetables were pretty much iceberg lettuce with a few small pieces of shredded cuke sprouts. I added the entire, supplied small container of fish sauce which helped in the flavour a bit but overall I found it lacking. Could have been so much better; even if they had added some chili slices. I definitely didn’t feel like it was worth $ 14.

This is my favorite Phở restaurant in Halifax. Coming from Vancouver, my tastebuds are rather snobby when it comes to authentic cuisine. My score is based on service and flavor of the phở. I ordered the beef /beef ball Phở and spring roll. I have never tried anything else on their menu. The restaurant is located in Clayton Park off of Lacewood across the street from Sobeys. Lots of parking as well.

I only had a small order, composed of BBQ pork fried rice and spring rolls, but these were both very tasty and I was more than happy with the quality of food and service. Price was great, too! Highly recommend.

I just ordered from here and I was sadly disappointed. I ordered a combination meal, shanghai noodles, and egg rolls. The gingered beef in the combo was dry. The rice was fine. The worst part of the meal was the shanghai noodles. There was no flavour and the noodles were mushy. Way over cooked. The shrimp in it were tough aswell. They also didn’t give me any soya sauce or any plum sauce for my egg rolls.

Best Chinese food I’ve ever had in my life. Shanghai noodles and fried wontons are the best. The owners are the sweetest people ever and quality is amazing!

I had the pork Phở. Really good just watch out for the hot sauce on the table. Better yet do not use it. It is a killer hot sauce. Even a few drops will be all you taste in your phở. Better to just enjoy the fresh taste then put that stuff in.

Went in tonight… approx. 7:30. Not a sole in the place, and its Mothers Day. We had a take out order for S&S Chicken, 2 spring rolls, and 3 egg rolls. We were told to pickup the order in 15 – 20 min, and I was there within 15. When we opened the Chicken, the sauce was cold. :(It made the experience so unenjoyable… then to top it off, one of the spring rolls had a HUMANHAIRSTICKING out of it… COOKEDRIGHTIN! Yummy, not. Then I went to the website, and it says… «We specialize in both Vietnamese and Chinese Cuisine. come in and give us a try — you won’t be disappointed!» I figure if you have a website… there must be an email address for customers to let them know how we felt… nothing! So I tried to call… line disconnected twice before I could speak to anyone… frustrating! We’ll we were disappointed… extremely. Now… I leave my comments here. Thanks Unilocal

I haven’t tried anything else but their Phở(Chicken, Pork and Beef… I prefer the pork the best). Really good Phở, love how I can add as much sweet and spice as I want. Friendly staff, small restaurant, some prefer to take out, either way it’s really good.

Having recently left Denver I thought I’d never find a Phở place equal to Pho79. A random Unilocal search found Fong Sing. I thought I’d try it, it has some great reviews. I am pleased to say… I have found my new Phở place!!! I had the«Salad roll» and chicken phở… The broth was flavourful and had plenty of chicken, noodles were great! It reminded me of having Phở with all my friends in Denver…

Four of us went for dinner. Three had phở, one had a «Chinese» combo. All of the food was very fresh, but the«Chinese» was a better choice. The phở was okay, but there is beter in the city. The beef was very tender, but the broth was overwhelmingly flavoured of star anise, rather than the layers of complexity that make a great phở. It was served with a very fresh plate of bean sprouts and cilantro. But there was no basil, which is a big problem for me. There was also lemon rather than lime; lime is much better. Service was a bit slow, but friendly.

This place is excellent. I have been coming here for almost 20 years and have never been disappointed. Disguised as a hole in the wall this place looks like a pass on by but really has an excellent following of loyal customers. The interior is simple and relaxing. The veggies used in the dishes are very tasty and fresh. Love the sauces they use and the service has always been attentive and welcoming. Take-out is available also and very fast. What more can you ask for? This place is sort of a «sleeper» in retrospect as the last time I was at this place two friends walked in on separate occasions and told me they always come here(unbeknown to me). Needless to say we now may start a fan club for Fong Sing!

I have a bit of a phở obsession, Since I’ve been hyping it up so much, my parents wanted to try it. I’ve heard good things about the phở here so I decided to bring them here. This place is in one of the many strip malls on Lacewood beside a busy bar. It definitely fits the description of a hole in the wall, the décor is nothing fancy. It isn’t dirty but it could use a few renovations. We entered the restaurant and were politely greeted and told where to sit. We were handed a menu immediately. My dad ordered the hot and sour soup and pad thai, my mom ordered rare beef phở and a spring roll, my brother ordered a Chinese combination plate, and I ordered kung pow chicken. The food was all brought out at different times. First to come out was my brother’s egg roll and my mom’s spring roll. My mom raved about her spring roll and I got a chance to try it and it was absolutely fantastic, my brother enjoyed his egg roll too. My dad knows his hot and sour soups, he said his was spicy and it got the seal of approval from him. Next was my brother’s combination plate which had chicken balls, rice, and beef with peppers. He gave us two thumbs up for his meal too. My dad’s pad Thai was spot on. It was especially delicious with the hot sauce they served us. My kung pow chicken was VERY spicy, just how I like it, lots of really nice veggies with a tangy, tasty sauce. I tried the phở broth and it was really good, spot on. Sadly my mom didn’t like it. We told the waitress we wanted the phở to go because my mom didn’t like it, and she ordered a wonton soup and an egg roll. The best part of the entire meal: She didn’t charge us for the phở! Simply because my mom didn’t like it. We were so impressed with that. All around this place deserves it’s 5 stars. The bill for all 4 of us was $ 44, for that price how can you go wrong! The waitress was prompt and polite, and the food was awesome. And my family found a new reasonably priced restaurant to grab some great food. Please do yourself a favor and give this place a try!

I had an excellent chicken phở and my friend had the spicy beef phở. The server was very friendly and explained the dishes to us. I thought the phở was spot on; served with a big plate of sprouts sauces etc. At $ 9.50 I thought the price was good so I will be back.

Had a chance to ride the office«phở train» to Fong Sing recently. Like others have mentioned, don’t be fooled by the seemingly sketchy surroundings. Little holes in the wall tucked away in nondescript strip malls have provided me with some of the most delicious meals ever. We rolled in as a big group, during an already busy lunch. Service was a bit scattered, but the food! I had the vegetarian vermicelli with a spring roll cut up on top. DELICIOUS. I’m pretty new to the world of Vietnamese food, but this place sure does seem pretty tasty. They also offer Chinese food(aka American Chinese food) which smelled pretty effing amazing as well. Looking forward to going back to check out some more delicious eats.

Vietnamese spring rolls. That’s really all I need to say. Because they’re delish. My favourite in town, in fact. And I could eat 10 in one sitting, but fortunately for my mid-section, I have enough discipline to keep it at 2. Followed by an enormous bowl of beef Phở, which is equally tasty. Their vermicelli is also great, and while I’ve only had their Chinese food a handful of times(because I can’t pull myself away from the spring rolls and Phở), it’s also pretty good. All in all, this is a great location for a group that has varying tastes — Vietnamese for the more adventurous and standard Canadian Chinese for the more mainstream folks in the crowd. Oh, yes, and if you’re a Phở takeout fan, their packaging is great — they keep the noodles and broth separate so there’s no mushiness happening. And, perhaps most importantly, the serving is every bit as substantial as you get when you eat-in.

No matter where you are in Halifax, if you’re looking for Vietnamese food, stop looking for grandiose restaurants on main streets and start looking at the strip malls. There seems to be some unspoken rule that says if you’re looking for vermicelli or phở, you’re most likely to find it sandwiched between a shady corner store and a unlimited tanning joint. Klassy. But don’t be deterred because believe it or not, these little holes in the wall, Fong Sing included, deliver the goods. Fong Sing became an office favourite for healthyish lunches without having to stray too far from Bedford. We’d convoy our way toward Applebee’s and dip into this great gem of a Vietnamese diner. The same lady was there every day to greet us with a smile and she certainly made sure we got our food fast. She might not be warm and fuzzy, but she gets the job done with ease. The phở always earned rave reviews with my skilled eating partners while I always stuck with my incredibly satisfying bowl of vermicelli with tofu, fresh veggies, and a veggie spring roll chopped up on top(this is a combination of two menu items but our lady managed to figure out something that worked for both me and her). I’d always leave full but not bloated and feeling much better than if I had eaten a sub or any other kind of food measured by the foot.

As with Phở Hoang Minh, I have to base my review primarily around the phở. Fong Sing is a pretty simple establishment, the staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the food — everything I or my companions have had, is top-notch. The only disappointment I’d have to say is that compared to other options it does seem a little pricey, but I don’t think it’s prohibitive, and that’s fine. In particular, the Vietnamese dishes are what you should focus on, the proprietors are Vietnamese and seem very proud of their menu. Definitely worth a visit.

Fong Sing Restaurant is located in the Clayton Park area. This is a small restaurant and seems to do a lot of take out, at least lunch time was. This was my first time trying here, but it was not the best. The food here was ok. I would not go out of my way to go here though, especially when I know there are other places around the corner.
