Fairly good. Actually, we hiked the Waterdown Bruce trail and didn’t expect much. It was cold evening and we wanted hot soupy Asian food. The Phở, PadThai and Vermicelli reallybhit the spots. They were able to accommodate our large group of 12 easily and served quickly. Definitely above avg for food. Staff could be a bit more friendly, tough…

This was our first visit to Nam Thanh. I’d like to give 2.5 stars because it was okay, but that’s not possible. The restaurant was really quiet for almost 1pm on a Saturday in a busy plaza(only one other table was occupied). We were surprised that the table was completely empty(no condiments) as that’s not the norm for Vietnamese restaurants in the area. The waiter, who I believe is also the owner, was the one who served us. He was very matter of fact, not at all friendly although not rude either. When he brought our spring rolls I asked for Sriracha or sambal oelek and he kind of looked at me like I was asking for something strange although he did bring Sriracha along with some hoisin. The spring rolls weren’t bad. They were made more in the Chinese way with a flour wrapper rather than a rice wrapper(our preference) as they usually are in Vietnamese restaurants. They tasted quite nice though and weren’t greasy. I had vermicelli with grilled pork and meatballs. First thing I noticed was that there was no bean sprouts(very unusual). The meatballs tasted nice and so did the grilled pork, but instead of being grilled slices of pork it was more of a chopped up hamburger. In other words, it was formed, ground pork that had been grilled. All in all, it wasn’t bad. My husband had the grilled pork vermicelli with sugarcane shrimp. The shrimp. although very tasty, wasn’t actually on a sugarcane. However, it tasted very nice and I wished I had also ordered that. Since there aren’t really any other choices for Vietnamese food in the Waterdown area(as far as we know), we’d probably go back because the food wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t as good as many of the restaurants in Mississauga or Toronto.

Tried this place with my sister and brother in law on Friday. Everything was a let down! The service was indifferent and the food inedible. I eat Vietnamese food regularly, and whatever they served me can only be described as a poor imitation of what it should be. I got my favourite type of bun, with grilled pork and minced shrimp on sugarcane. Normally, this is served with marinated pork belly, a piece of sugarcane with the shrimp on it, and the usual additions to the rice noodle, nuts, lettuce, herbs, pickled root veg and sauce. This had mealy slabs of ground meat(I couldnt say if it was pork), cheap, oily and tepid shrimp mix(no sugarcane), some nuts and a few shreds of lettuce. The nuoc cham was horrid, overly sweetened to the point that there was nothing else to it — no acid, no sour, no heat from the chillies. The thing that really set me off is that the owner was serving us and made no effort to do the job properly. That pot of tea we ordered? Never showed up. I had pushed my bowl away, almost full, but he never once asked how things were or tried to fix the issue. He just gave us the bill and walked away. Save yourself the hassle and go next door to Little Ceasars instead.

I was excited to see that a Vietnamese restaurant has opened near Dundas in the Wal Mart shopping plaza west of Waterdown. The menu is quite extensive, including many Vietnamese favourites as well as a nice sprinkling of dishes from other SE Asian countries. I had difficulty choosing my meal, but settled on the seafood, pork, and rice noodle soup in a chicken stock, which was absolutely delicious, and significantly better than the soup I’ve had at other Hamilton-area Vietnamese restaurants. Service was courteous and prompt, though I arrived only a few minutes before closing. I’m very much looking forward to returning and trying other menu items, as well as the fruit shakes and bubble tea!
