Beyond the Batter Cupcakes

First off, these are JUST cupcakes, which can be bought anywhere is comparable quality.
As I was hosting a very special birthday party for my spouse I rented a stand from them, and the deposit was taken from my visa. When the stand was returned the funds were not, and I thought nothing of it as I thought it would just be refunded back to my visa. After 2 months I happened to notice that it was not. At this point I called, expecting there was just an innocent issue with the refund, but then was told in a condescending response that ‘WE ALWAYS RETURN THE FUNDS IN CASH, ITS STORE POLICY SO YOU MUST BE WRONG!!!“
I took the issue up with visa because I think this is boardline laundering, and it took MONTHS for Visa to confirm the refund; in the mean time I unsuccessfully discussed the issue with a VERY rude manager, and after 3 months of going through this issue was FINALLY in contact with the OWNER!!! — 3 months for the owner to show any concern…3 months… At which point she said «I will refund you your money in cash if you take down you review of my business» —resorting to blackmailing us!!! — can you believe that!!! Thankfully Visa confirmed they are retards, and I did not have resort to the blackmailing.
For these reasons of feeling like a completely insignificant customer to them I will NEVER walk into their doors again, I will never accept another cupcake purchased from there if a friend offers one, and will actively express their terrible customer relationship capabilities again and again.

The first thing I noticed is that it’s right next door to The Running Room. I took that as a sign that I could eat as much as I wanted, and run it off later (note: as soon as I’m done writing this review, I’m going running).
The cupcake I had was pleasant. The frosting was a spiralling peak of butter cream, but without the sugar overload that takes it into that gross territory where the tastebuds are overloaded and you can feel the enamel peeling from your teeth. The cake portion was light, fluffy, and tasty — but it kind of reminded me of the flavour of store-​bought packages of cake mix. I’m not complaining: I’m not so snobby that I’ll turn my nose up at mixes (hello, childhood!), but it made me feel there wasn’t quite a signature taste that separates this place from the next.
This not to say that I won’t go back, because I will. Everything looked so tasty, and I sadly didn’t have room in my belly for each one.

Went in today for the first time-​we had a Groupon and the kids were excited to pick some of the beautiful cupcakes.
There were a ton of choices and the store was lovely.
We chose several different kinds and even the smell in the car as we were driving home was intoxicating. We had a lemon cupcake after lunch and wow I was impressed-​the icing not too sweet, but a delightful level of lemon flavor and very fresh tasting. The cake part was moist and not overly lemony-​and with a very light texture.
I look forward to trying the other kinds-​coca cola, cake batter, etc. Service was great and the young man that served us spoke (gasp!) with my kids-​that alone will have me coming back. Well done.

I stopped in looking to buy a small treat for a friends birthday. The cupcakes themselves looked great, a lot of selection and depending on the day of the week different flavours were available.
I love to support local businesses however my experience was not pleasant. The customer service is completely lacking. In talking to the girl I asked what a couple of her favourites were and she said «there’s no point» in telling me and it’s «a waste of time» because customers never buy the ones she suggests. It took me a few minutes to choose which treat I wanted and when I gave her my order she said «you’re only getting one?» When I asked if it was her store I only got attitude in return. (I picked up a business card to find out there are a few more locations outside the Ottawa area owned by the same woman).
It’s not hard to crack a smile and throw out a few suggestions. My friend liked her cupcake but with so many cupcake shops around I don’t see a need to go back.
