A girlfriend and I took our kids for a day trip to the Lavender Field in Prince Edward County. It’s a little place nestled between Closson Chase Vineyards and Chase Farm, so on a gorgeous summer day, it would be easy to spend an entire afternoon enjoying the fragrant outdoors, then walking over to the vineyard to sample some of the locally made wine. Because we took four young kids with us, we stopped at the lavender field, and for about half and hour, the clouds cleared away and the sun came out! The kids ran around the gorgeous front lawn while Tan and I took a few pictures and enjoyed the grounds. There is a small lavender field on the side of what looks like a farmhouse(probably the Field office now) and my sons enjoyed smelling the lavender and other flowers. For a $ 5.00 fee, adults can pay to see the actual lavender field in the back(children 12 and under are free). We decided to skip that particular tour, however, I’ve heard that it is quite beautiful and that they have wonderful gardens and other plants. There also keep bees and bee hives for the lavender honey making and probably other exhibits that showcase all of the things they make in-house with the pretty purple flower. The gift shop is lovely. They sell almost anything you can imagine, made out of lavender, based on lavender, and the colour lavender. There was so much to look at, smell and taste, it was almost difficult to control our 4 kids from completely touching every little item in the shop. It’s a good thing the workers there seemed welcoming of kids. In the end, we purchased a few goodies. I bought a bottle of Lavender Hydrosol for a little home spritzing.(I’m sort of into home scents right now) Tan’s girls got adorable lavender coloured knickknacks(they collect souvenirs) and we bought a small pack of lavender shortbread, a bottle of dry lavender soda and a cup of lavender gelato to try. The dry soda was okay — to me, it tasted like club soda with a whisper of lavender. I should tell you I’m not a fan of club soda unless it’s transformed into a grown-up beverage, like Sangria. The gelato can be described exactly like Tan’s daughter said: «It tastes like perfume.» Interesting, but completely true, in my opinion. The shortbread cookies, however, were very good. Maybe because you could barely taste the flower? But you could see the bits in each biscuit. I had to resist the urge to buy another package, which had 6 little shortbread squares in each. The prices are as you expect from a tourist attraction. While we didn’t visit the neighbouring vineyard, I think spending a day visiting both locales would be a wonderful day trip«in the County.» If you are ever near the area, i’d suggest dropping in on a beautiful summer day. Nothing like a glass of wine to accompany a lavender shortbread cookie, right?
