Cafe Rico

Le café Rico est très petit, il faut donc éviter d’y aller en grand nombre (trois semble être le maximum) ce qui est dommage car le café y est assez bon et peu cher. On peut choisir de prendre une tasse ou un bol pour ceux qui ont vraiment besoin d’une plus grande dose de café.
Les serveurs sont sympathiques et viennent servir les clients à leur table (ce qui évite une maladresse aux gens malhabiles comme moi).
Si ce n’est pas le genre de café à «chercher», pourquoi né pas s’y arrêter quand on est dans le coin?

Very friendly staff and a great selection of teas! The café au lait is also amazing. But the best surprise is the date and pistachio based pastries (recommeded by one of the staff and really tasty — naturally sweet but not too sweet!).
I will definitely make Café Rico a regular stop on my trips to Montréal — and you should too!

Probably the best coffee I’ve had in quite some time. Really rich strong coffee, which I personally like. I had a cappuccino and it was the perfect amount of milk to froth (and the size of the cup was appropriate, not too big!) they obviously take their coffee very seriously, fair trade coffee with a map showing what comes from where. Very well priced too, actually I would wait cheap! Good coffee at cheap prices, win win in my book!

Where the hell can I get a big latte for less than $ 4 in the plateau? Nowhere, not if you want it to be crazy yummy.
Do you? Do you want the person making your latte to smile and look you in the eye? Do you want to pay quickly and just chill and love your coffee?

Certified fair trade coffee, a nice selection of organic treats, and super affordable prices — you really can’t beat that!
I got two Americanos (one double), a muffin and a 500g bag of coffee beans all for under $ 20. Srsly. There isn’t a better deal on Mont Royal.
The sit-​down café is sweet, with vintage tunes and sun pouring into the street-​facing windows. The window seat really is the best, especially when you’ve had way way way enough of winter. Ahhhhh, purrrrrrr, sun!

Café Rico is a great fair-​trade café with its own roasting operation, and makes a great cup of coffee.
The space is long and narrow, but never feels too cramped. Still, the atmosphere isn’t always the most conducive for working or a long chat with an old friend; the bean grinders can amp up the noise level quite a lot, and there can be surprising drafts from the front and back doors. That said, the décor is lovely, and I’d take a hand-​pulled latte here over the generic competition up the block any day.
Also, urban parents take note: In the back, there is a cute little toy kitchen and other toys (bead maze, etc.), where kids can play and let mom and dad caffeinate. Much appreciated.

La réputation du café Rico pour servir du café biologique et équitable n’est plus à faire, ayant été des pionniers de la chose longtemps avant que cela né devienne, disons-​le, la mode. Espérons que leur important travail de solidarité continuera de porter les fruits escomptés encore longtemps, tant auprès des producteurs dans d’autres pays qu’au niveau de la sensibilisation du public d’ici aux enjeux du commerce équitable. J’aime aussi beaucoup le fait qu’ils exposent de temps à autre sur leurs murs des artistes et photographes aux préoccupations solidaires et que leur café soit d’une qualité irréprochable. Il est d’ailleurs possible de l’acheter en gros.
Cependant, le nouveau local où ils se sont relocalisé récemment est légèrement moins intéressant que l’ancien de la rue Rachel, quoique mieux situé, directement sur l’Avenue Mont-​Royal. Il a perdu son cachet artisanal au profit d’une ambiance légèrement plus soignée. Je né suis pas sûr de me sentir si bien à passer beaucoup de temps là-​bas, les machines à torréfier/​moudre vous assourdissant épisodiquement, pour de longues minutes, dans un local encore plus petit qu’avant. L’endroit est donc exigu, sur le long, mais décoré de façon créative. Le fait qu’il n’y ait pas de prises de courant partout pour ceux qui veulent travailler (la connexion Internet fonctionnait cependant très bien) dérange un peu. Enfin, je trouve irritant dans n’importe quel commerce quand un propriétaire prend la place au détriment de sa clientèle. Je trouve dans ce cas-​ci que les patrons pourraient discuter moins fort avec les employés (sans presque crier à travers le café) et accorder à la clientèle, qui vient dépenser ses sous dans leur commerce, la quiétude qui leur est due.
L’endroit a tout de même de la personnalité, dispose d’excellentes essences de café équitable et biologique, et est bien-​sûr à essayer.
Le stationnement est facile dans les rues avoisinantes.

This is the real deal! Café Rico takes quality of of its beans very seriously by delivering coffee lovers with a vast array of complex flavored beans (over 18 types) in an extremely friendly atmosphere! On a Saturday morning, surrounded by burlesque photographies and smooth jazz music, I had the pleasure of enjoying an espresso and latte which were very reasonably priced!
Owner Sevan, half Armenian and half Columbian, brings new meaning to fair trade by working directly with coffee producers from Bolivia, Brasil, Guatemala, Mexico, Indonesia, New Guinea, Tanzania… and roasts its own coffee right here in Montréal. One his creations actually was recently evaluated a Barista Coffee championship in Frederic.
If you’re a true aficionado or a an enthusiast, do stop by for a cup of the «real deal»!
