Candide Café

Second café I went and I was not disappointed! I went there several times to study and do homework with my friend and it’s so calm and cozy. The owner of the café is really sweet and always wears a big smile on his face. Lovely café!

Un propriétaire super sympa, des boissons chaudes délicieuses, un choix de petites pâtisseries a mourir .
Un bon espace si tu veux venir étudier, tables espacées et aussi grandes, des prises bien disposées, et surtout c’est clair et aéré !
Sans oublier cette magnifique musique de fond, assez calme pour étudier ou l’avoir en fond de parlotte

C’est nouveau et c’est beau! J’ai visité le Candide quelques jours après son ouverture et il y a eu une super évolution depuis. Beau décor (vous pouvez dessiner votre propre mouton à la craie sur un mur, trop cool!), grande quantité de livres disponibles pour prendre une pause en se cultivant (d’ailleurs vous pouvez en amener un de votre bibliothèque personnelle pour échanger), possibilité de profiter de la terrasse en été ou d’un banc avec vue sur l’extérieur lorsqu’il fait plus froid. Vous pouvez ainsi juger tous les gens qui se promènent dans ce coin de la Plaza.
Ils servaient du Kittel la dernière fois que je suis allée. J’ai bien aimé mon latte amande, sans le trouver exceptionnel toutefois, comparativement au proprio qui offre toujours un excellent service, tout comme sa complice au comptoir. Merci de l’accueil chaleureux, je donnerai très certainement une autre chance au café puisqu’il fait bon prendre une pause au Candide!

Found the perfect café close to home!
My friend showed us this coffee shop and I wish I had known about this place before, I could’ve spent days studying here! The café is definitely a nice spot to wind down with friends or work on your stuff. There’s even a library with this only rule: you have to leave a book for each book you take with you, which I think is simply wonderful. There’s beautiful art hanging on the walls and it just looks like home all around you.

Location: Tucked away in Plaza St. Hubert. Street parking is available [metered]. For some reason, people don’t seem to have issues finding a parking spot here but they might just be lucky.
The place: Small café with a few tables, and bar-​seating area by the front window. For those of you who know about my obsession with street art, you won’t be surprised when I tell you how delighted I was to find an amazing mural on the main wall, courtesy of one of Montréal’s top crews. Bonus!
The goods: Coffee and a few baked goods. I forgot to ask the barista which beans they use, but this issue was quickly resolved when my fellow coffee-​lover and Unilocaler Khai, messaged me to discuss the bean situation. These guys use Kittle beans, and truth be told, I bought a bag last year and wasn’t a fan. Despite buying an Espresso roast (or some kind of dark roast — I forget), I found the coffee to be too weak for my tastes. I am happy to report that the folk at Candide make a kickass Macchiato with said beans, and I was pleasantly surprised when I found out they were using Kittle. I put their Macchiato on par with Code Black (they don’t use Kittle), which is my #1 place for coffee served in tiny cups.
Service: Friendly.
Price point: I think the Macchiato was $ 3.15.

Très sympathique café de la rue St-​Hubert, les smoothies sont excellents, et la terrasse y est très agréable.

I’ve been back to Candide several times, and on most occasions, I’ve noticed the owners sitting outside on their terrace, often with friends, while they’re on shift. I know running a café is hard work, and I’ve got nothing against anyone taking a break. Still, I was feeling discomfited by this behaviour, though it took me a while to figure out how to explain why. Basically, this behaviour makes the owners feel less like hosts and more like guests. If they’re doing this when you want something, you either break in and feel like you’re «imposing» yourself on them, or you wait – neither of which is an appealing option. And this is coming from a «pushy» American. Both owners are very friendly, but this is unprofessional enough that I’m taking one star off my review.

J’adore la terrasse du nouveau café de quartier le candide! J’aime aussi beaucoup le concept d’avoir une bibliothèque où l’on peut prendre et rapporter des livres et le logo de l’endroit est super cute.
Points négatifs, dizaine de «bébittes à fruits» dans la salle de bain (j’veux pas savoir pour ce qui est de la cuisine) et pour le Cappuccino et bien je crois qu’il était fait avec un americano (espresso super allongé) et une tasse de lait, ce qui en résulta en quelques chose ressemblant beaucoup à un latté et pas cappu du tout.
Le café vient d’ouvrir, peut-​être que cet employé n’est pas habitué de faire des cafés, bref peu importe la raison…
Retour aux points positifs, le thé est bio et le jus d’orange fraichement pressé.
J’oserai redonner une 2e chance à ce café mais j’opterai plutôt pour un espresso, simplement.

so i went back the other day as it was quite a rainy day so i stayed closer to home.
coffee has definitely improve. well, temperature has improve a lot. its not burning hot like previously. still a tad hot but that’s totally ok as you need to let the coffee breathe a little so it gives its full flavor (just like wine and what Jesse of Artiste Affamé said to do!)
i’m still miffed by the sizing but that’s how they chose to do it so it is what it is.
the library is full of books now. its a take one, leave one so if you ever have books you don’t read anymore, bring them here and trade it for another book. books are from la parenthèse further north on la plaza if you ever want to check them out.
anyway, definitely a good coffee shop on la plaza that is quite crowded now

Nouveau café qui vient tout juste d’ouvrir sur une plazza qui se cherche (et se trouve) un nouveau visage.
Des produits locaux, une salle lumineuse et une jeune equipe très agréable !
Café, thé, smoothies et de quoi combler les petites faims.
