Gainzbar

I was in town, so my Montréal friends suggested a reunion here. It was relaxing to slip away from the hustle and bustle of Montréal into this intimate, dimly-​lit lounge. The jazz music playing quietly in the background complemented the stylish décor. Some nights, they have live jazz performances. They have a decent selection of local beer and international big-​names. We ordered various pints of craft beer, and passed them around our table for sampling. I can’t comment on their tapas because we had dinner beforehand. If you’re looking for a laidback place to hang out and play pool, check Gainzbar out.

Perfecto! J’y suis allé grâce à une amie et c’est un bar très sympa, bonne ambiance, musicos sympas, et une belle terrasse qui donne envie d’évasion pendant un pur instant de décontraction.

Not your typical watering hole. You can sit at a table or if you are lucky enough, you can get one of the corners and chill out having drinks with friends on one of their sofas. There are live bands that play on Thursday and Sundays. On Thursdays you get the added bonus of being able to order fresh oysters from their oyster bar. Definitely better than getting peanuts and chips with your drink.
If you want to snack while having drinks, there are choices for everyone, from a vegetable plate, to a cheese platter, to a charcuterie plate. You can wash all this down with a nice selection of bottled and draft beers or one of the many kinds of wines they offer either by the glass or the bottle.
All this, in the middle of rue St-​Hubert. A street that is better known for the multitude of wedding shops, than anything else. Gainzbar, is the nice surprise to rest your weary feet while having a drink and maybe a lite snack.

J’y suis allée à une seule reprise, né me rendant pas très souvent dans ce secteur. J’ai apprécié l’endroit, l’ambiance était décontractée et jazzy et j’ai eu le béguin pour le décor aux accents rouges!
Il fait bon prendre un verre sur la terrasse extérieure, petite mais relativement confortable.
Le service n’avait rien d’extraordinaire, mais il était correct. La serveuse semblait arborer un sourire forcé la plupart du temps, attendant impatiemment son pourboire. Meh.
Les prix des consommations alcoolisées sont dans la norme. J’ai toutefois été agréablement surprise par la grosseur de mon verre de mojito! :)

With an ambiance that’s kitschy, quirky, and slightly baroque, this is perhaps the only bar in Montréal worthy of the adjective «swank.» Relaxed crowd of mostly 30– and 40-​somethings intent on some grown-​up fun. Expect any of the occasional live music acts to know not only how to play well enough, but how to find numbers lower than 10 on the volume dial. Gainzbar is also one of the few bars I know that has found an acceptable use for TVs in a bar, which is to contribute constructively to the ambiance by silently playing trashy B-​movies from the mid-​20^th century. The overall atmosphere is inviting and relaxed.
Bartenders are emphatically not mixologists. Don’t order an Old Fashioned or a Sidecar. Do order beers, shots, and simple drinks like G&Ts. Cheers!

Je suis contrariée quand ça vient au Gainzbar. La place est belle, la musique est bonne, mais à chaque fois je trouve le service au bar et aux tables assez ordinaire. Pour une place qui se dit whisky et jazz, je n’ai jamais l’impression que le staff y croit. Ils ont souvent l’air bête, n’offrent pas de conseils et manquent le côté «friendly» qu’on retrouve normalement dans les bars de jazz. Juste pour ça, j’hésite souvent à y aller. Mais c’est ben beau comme bar!

Gen M’s first line? The perfect description of Gainzbar.
I discovered Gainzbar on the occasion of a friend of a friend’s record launch. The Gainzbar has a private room upstairs, that was perfectly suited for the occasion. It was filled with comfy sofas for us to lounge on while chatting and listening. The private room has it’s own bar, so there were no issues keeping the drinks flowing. The space is cosy and had a homey feel, but a sort of glam homey feel. I felt like they had taken my (Italian) grandma’s sofas, your traditional massive wood with green floral print velour, and glammed them up with a solid rich red velour.
The drinks were appropriately priced, and they appear to have happy hour specials, because they ended up costing me a lot less than what I had expected reading their drink list.
The location itself is pretty interesting, tucked away on the St. Hubert Street shopping strip, a mere block or two away from the Beaubien metro. Not the first place I would think to go out for a pint in the area, so I will keep it in mind the next time I’m doing some shopping on St Hubert and need to fortify myself with a pint.

L’endroit est sympathique et chaleureux et la sélection de bières en fût intéressante. Il est possible de réserver, ce qui est rare dans un bar. Idéal pour prendre l’apéro.

On y va pour le cadre et l’ambiance, pas forcément pour le service toujours agréable mais pas toujours performant :) Né vous avisez pas de demander un cocktail classique mais pas à la mode. On né sait pas faire.

So it’s not super cheap but therE’s a terrasse protected from the rain. Nice service, The French guy, Stéphane a very good barman, pretty funny guy. We enjoyed our short time there. I broke a glass, felt like an @sshole but still, pretty nice bar with a cool feeling to it. I will go back there for sure, it’s cool to see the area, really nice place to chill and drink.
C’est vraiment une belle place, pas trop cher mais pas non plus donné. On y sert une belle variété de drink, j’me suis senti assez con, j’ai brisé un beau verre, mais bon, c’est la vie! Je né suis pas resté longtemps, l’endroit a défnitivement un bon feeling avec une bonne vibe, j’ai hâte de voir ces soirées jazz. Sinon j’vais y retourné, j’ai bien hâte.

When I’m in the area this is one of my favorite spots. I’ve been here a few times and always enjoy the décor, drinks and location.

Le Gainzbar dissemble catégoriquement de la grande majorité des commerces que l’on rencontre à la Plaza Saint-​Hubert. À vrai dire, on le croirait surgir d’une autre époque avec son beau bois couleur pourpre qui rappelle les vieux cabarets de jazz français. Ce bar a vraiment tout un cachet, et malgré son intérieur qui emprunte les allures d’un lounge douillet, cossu et distingué, je né le considère pas pour autant dans la classe des pinces-​fesses. D’ailleurs, et j’en suis fort heureux, l’entrée né requiert ni code vestimentaire, ni frais d’entrée… Multiples agréments vous y attendent. Assis sur les chics causeuses et les fauteuils confortables, c’est dans une atmosphères cosy et décontractée que l’on peut siroter une bière en fût (Sapporo, Sleeman, Unibroue), ou encore se lancer dans les vins, champagnes, spiritueux, assiette de fromages, charcuteries, et hum… café alcoolisés, un peu cher cependant (9,00 $ sans le pourboire).
Plusieurs événements y ont lieu: tous les premiers dimanche du mois, au deuxième étage (oui il y a un deuxième, que l’on peut louer d’ailleurs pour des soirées personnelles), l’on peut assister à une soirée poésie musicalement accompagnée et intitulée Vivement Poésie. Au premier, au cœur de l’action, il n’est pas rare de tomber sur des spectacles jazz. La soirée se transforme alors en un cabaret festif, où la troupe de musiciens, très animée, donne tout ce qu’elle a, à même le sol, et à proximité de la foule. Promiscuité garantie… Il né suffit plus alors que de fermer les rideaux rouges, et l’on est déconnecté de la rue Saint-​Hubert.

Looking for a place to chill out, have a pint, and chat with friends? This is the place.
Whether it’s a local jazz trio playing softly in the background or rock music emanating from the speakers, you won’t be yelling to get your point across to your friends who are two feet away, they adjust the volume so you can actually have a conversation.
A little bit of a bohemian ambiance, with comfortable seats, especially their couches.
Play a game of pool, watch the hockey game on one of the two screens in the bar, or just enjoy some good shooters and beer.
