Great place to pick up really cheap veg*items. Hours of operation kind of suck though.

In a search to locate organic fruits downtown montreal Le Frigo Vert came up as number one on the list. I took the metro over on my lunch hour, hoping to populate my empty fruit bowl at the office. Turns out that there were only some really old apples and oranges. As for veggies, they had broccoli. I did notice a decent supplies of vegetarian and vegan wares. But not a Product Market in anyway. I should have taken my chances elsewhere.

The staff are nice. The kitchen out back is a bit grungy though but I like the lounge area in the back although its a bit dark out there in the back-not much sunlight. Hmmm weird that they don’t recycle in the kitchen. They always have unique items. I would criticize that their backed goods should have more can sugar free dried fruit free sweets, cakes, cookies since my body cannot tolerate that. Also some of their other products have sugar in them. Their prices are reasonable. I like that you can prepare cook in their kitchen. Also I like that you can buy nice teas and drink it out back. They close too early and are not open 7 days a week just 4 which sucks.

Pretty much the only place where I do my shopping(though now that Al Raji on Center’s expanded, I’m not sure anymore). Frigo is small and wonderful and packed to the gills with stuff that’s good for ya and is a heck of a lot cheaper than what you’d find it priced at in health food stores around the city. Oh — and screw that guy who wants the workers to be his best friends. They don’t have to be. This is not a store — it’s an amazing solidarity coop. The times I’ve gone in and overheard serious conversations by workers about the consideration that’s gone into the products they’re buying. One time, the store person warned me that he didn’t know for absolute certainty that the date square I was about to buy was totally vegan but that they were looking into it. That totally cinched it. Especially when 99% of the commercial health food stores are selling shark-cartilage pomades and overpriced packages of nutritional yeast.

Cheaper than most, organic, vegan/vegetarian grocery store with a great selection that will surely suit your taste buds’ needs! Not only that, they also sell organic deodorants and soaps, among other organic hygienic supplies. By being a registered student at Concordia you also gain the benefit of a 25% discount, which definitely helps in the long run. I will no longer waste my money elsewhere unless I can’t find it for a cheaper price at Le Frigo Vert. I’m so happy I found this place!

Well, it’s alright. I like going here to buy my vegan wares. There’s a lot of selection and it’s one of the only places I know of in Montréal where I can buy Daiya cheese. Hear that, world? Now I can finally make vegan poutine that tastes RIGHT. They have a number of cheap snacks of varying quality as well for the non-discriminating palate. If you get a membership thing as a Concordia student, you get 25% off if I’m not mistaken, which is a huge chunk of change in the long-run. The staff was pretty helpful in getting me a membership card. The staple vegan goods like Daiya and Earth Balance are also a lot cheaper here than anywhere else I’ve found in the city, which is a huge plus. My one complaint is that the staff treat me… weird. Every time. The following scenario has occured a dozen times, and I’m certain will occur again(unless they read this, maybe): two clerks are talking to each other about a band/feminism/vegan power/some hipster thing. I approach the counter with my items. Cashier looks at me as if I killed his entire family years ago and called him every morning for the rest of his life to remind him of it. Second clerk looks incredibly annoyed, as if the conversation was not worth interrupting for 30 seconds to complete a transaction. Upon completing the transaction, I exclaim, «Thank you, have a nice day!» and show a genuine, cheery smile. I genuinely want this person to have a nice day. I want him to be happy. I care about his life. I wish him success and many flowers and I commend him on working at a co-op and helping out Concordia students to buy cheap, affordable vegan and organic goods. I want his mother to be in a great state of health. His dad, too. And if he has any siblings, I’d like for them to be at least in a reasonable state of health and accrue at least a decent degree of financial success. However, the cashier does not smile back. In fact, he says nothing. The next word out of his mouth is, «Anyway…» as he goes back to this conversation with clerk #2. This is a complaint I often have with businesses. Lack of good customer service. It may seem a bit Larry David-esque of me, but it wouldn’t kill people to be nice every once in a while. It’s taking 30 seconds out of your day. 30 seconds. And also, please consider that it is your job and a social convention for you to be polite and courteous to customers. Most people don’t enjoy going back to businesses that give them unorthodox treatment. Apart from that one thing, don’t be afraid of Frigo Vert. It’s cheap, it’s organic, and there are plenty of vegan things in there. So yeah, vegan power.
