On ambiance alone the Faculty Club gets 5 stars. This is everything one might hope for in a university club; built by a German sugar tycoon for his family in the 1880’s, full of lavish wood detailing, gorgeous stained glass paneling, and quiet conversations at every table in the dining room between les éminence grises in corduroy blazers with elbow patches. The food is ok but not great, and any time I’ve been to the club with family or other faculty I’ve been laughingly warned about this. It almost seems inevitable that the food would fail to quite live up to the lavish surroundings, but the dripping wet salad and strangely goofy smiley faces on the desserts this week seemed a little over the top. My salmon was tasty though, and those at our table who ordered the filet mignon cleaned their plates.
