I try to come here once a month when I’m in the area for work. The goat roti is amazing! The potatoes are so fluffy and soft. The spice is just right. The meat is so soft and tender. Try it for yourself! I’ve recommended this place to all my friends.

Excellent Trini rotis! The chicken, prawn and goat are excellent. Be warn, the goat is spicier than the other two and has the bones in it, as it really should. Oh, try the house made ‘peppa’ sauce too. It’s fantastic! There is more on the menu I have yet to try, as when I get there, I can’t help but get another roti.

It’s so good. My Favourite place for some home cookin. Try the chicken or shrimp roti. They are big and filling. If you want something a little smaller, get a double. These are sweet and flavourful. Enjoy. Tell Shak. #CHRISPECT from Winnipeg sent you. and tell Shak extra hot. Mmmmmm

Dishes from Trinidad and Tobago… a bit far from my place, street meter parking, and at the rear but at your own risk… small place, decors very ordinary, no hard copy of the menu, you need to go to the counter and look at the board to placevyour order, a place that is a one man show, the owner is the cook/server/cashier etc, i went here with a friend whom just like me adventurous eating is a hobby, at first the owner was’nt really friendly dahhhhh somewhat rude actually but when he learned that aside from eating we were there to review the place and the foods… oopppssss sudden change!!! The attitude turned into a more acceptable behavior… thats fine we all had our moments but still we are customers and we deserve some fair and good treatment… spicy dishes the name of the place justified the taste of the roti… in all fairness thats the best roti ive ever tasted, the roti is 5 star… all the rest 2… service at the beginning 0 – 1 star. we tried double for the appetizer and beef roti for me while my friend had the chicken roti. we had drinks from the carribean and their not bad… foods tasted good aswell… not coming back… sorry…

Thank you Unilocal or I never would have even seen this place to try it out. What a gem! I stopped in for lunch and got the doubles which was a delicious warm and spicy chickpea mix on soft and tasty little breads and I am hooked. This will be a new lunch spot for me(dinner if i lived in the area!). The gentleman(maybe the owner) was very friendly also. So stoked to have found this place in new west!

Never mind that it’s the only Trinidadian food in metro Vancouver, it’s also incredible! The doubles are on par with anything you’d get in Trinidad! It’s so worth a trip out of your way to come to d roti shak!

Well, I love rotis and as most people know it’s pretty hard to find roti in the lower mainland. When I was training out in Port Moody I would always go to Rehanahs, it’s awesome. But then I found this place in New West which is actually closer to me so I decided to check it out. I’ve been here a few times and the owner is pretty nice and the flavours of the roti are pretty good, I always get the goat. But the one thing that really bothers me is that the goat isn’t boneless! You’ll be biting into your roti and almost breaking your teeth on a goat bone… brutal! It’s like eating a wrap or a burrito, you don’t expect the damn thing to have bones in it! The first time it happened it was just one bone and I thought they were just careless, but when it happened again and there was more than one bone in it, that’s just being lazy… it’s too bad the flavours were good and the owner was pretty nice but I won’t be back…

Great food I’ve been there atleast 10 times now and I am always satisfied with the food every time. The owner Shak is passionate about his food. I would recommend this to anyone looking to try food from Trinidad!

I’m giving a 4 star only because I didn’t get what was completely described on the picture(s). No famous chutney or side for that price? However it deserves a 5 for their freshness and quality of food, clean & friendly ambience. Though back in MTL I could get these items everywhere for half the price but not once did I feel gipped because the food is that good and I understand the business. We will be back! I will recommend this place as a staple Trini establishment in the lower mainland. I’m already looking forward to the next visit! Only 2 negatives for this visit were because I felt for at that price there should of been a side of some sort of veg. Like a salad or whatever described in pictures. The other one was the owner came to me and asked if I cared to have some hot sauce and I was excitingly joyed but to receive this homemade version of a watered down over seasoned with aromatics than actually any hot substance. That hot sauce gets a low level heat score of 2 and that’s because I personally felt no heat. Authentic friendly comfort food worth every penny!

I feel bad writing this, but I’m so very disappointed. I have heard great things about this place. Some of my family is from Trinidad, and Barbados is my second home. The best Roti I’ve ever had was at a place in Barbados called the Ackee Tree. I’ve had all their curry dishes and Roti, everything was such a amazing combination of flavour. My husband drove in from North Van today with my order. One chicken Roti, and one veggie Roti. I paid over $ 2 each to add pumpkin and spinach to my veggie roti. So almost $ 15 now. Where to begin, the potatoes tasted like wet plain mashed potatoes. The spinach was just wet spinach. Whenever I have had a veggie Roti, the spices and flavours were so very good. I didn’t think the chicken Roti was much better. Just really blah! I ended not eating more than a mouthful of husband ate his chicken roti and agreed it was just okay. I guess I’ll try Rehanna’s next in Port Moody. If this is what everybody calls a great place for a roti, than you’ve never had a great flavourful traditional roti. This was a watered down version of one. I was really excited to finally try their food, and it’s been awhile since I was this let down, total bummer.

Delicious. If you like spice, this is the joint. Ordered the doubles, 6 pk of phelouri, goat roti, shrimp curry and stewed chicken and beans. Don’t let the price scare you, you actually feel like you’ve eaten an entire animal in the end. The goat roti was packed with meat and potatoes(win). The doubles were sweet and tasty as well as the phelouri(sp). The stewed chicken and beans was satisfying and a perfect choice if you can’t handle the heat. The shrimp was a little salty but other than that, it was good. The tamarind sauce is not only key for the phelouri but even better with the doubles and the roti. Use it as a balance for the spice. I’ll eat there again.

Wicked lamb roti! Friendly shop with beers from the Carribbean make it a mini vacation, especially on a hot summer day.(Edit: the owner definitely is no ray of sunshine though). Cost-wise, it’s a little on the pricey side for the neighbourhood. The lamb roti is ~$ 12, whereas the price of an equally spicy shawarma at any of the shops within a few blocks is only about $ 5. BUT, the roti itself has more unique and(I’m guessing) «real» home-made flavour than those less expensive wraps.

D Roti Shak just popped up one day on 12th, and I’m sorry to say it wasn’t until last week, fresh back from a caribbean vacation and jonesin for some caribbean food that I noticed it while running errands. D Roti Shak serves Trinidadian food, which surprisingly enough, is very reminicent of Indian food with caribbean influences. The Partner in Crime and I each split a doubles as an appy, which is 2 lentil pan-fried pancakes with chickpeas in a tasty sauce in between, with chili sauce and tamarind. We each had a chicken roti as our main, which was like deliciously-spiced stewed chicken and potato, wrapped in a flatbread that’s thinner than a tortilla and much more flavourful, and super-filling. I also tried the sorrel, which is a hibiscus tea with spices and sugar. It tasted strongly of cloves and cinnamon. It would be great hot in the winter as well. The restaurant is very casual, with a seat-yourself, serve-yourself atmosphere. The walls are painted in bright colours and soca and reggae music instantly put you in a laid-back mood. The sunny staff really put you in the no-worries-man mood. Partner In Crime and I will definitely be coming back for another round of good tings to eat :)

I’m not that well acquainted with Caribbean food, but I intend to get to know it better after tonight’s visit to this casual, colourful little place on 12th. The doubles and aloo pie knocked my socks off. Seriously. I ate there 3 hours ago and am already thinking about my next visit. My entrée, the chicken roti, was flavourful and spicy and huge for $ 9. Great value. The environment is laid-back and friendly. While you order at the counter and seat yourself, the staff are extremely warm and friendly, and happy to chat with you about unfamiliar items or recommendations. The menu is very small, which may be because they’re new, or it might just be their thing. No complaints if it’s the latter, because everything they do, they seem to do it extremely well. This is going to be a regular on my local restaurant rotation!

If you’re looking for authentic Trinidadian food, you don’t have to settle for The Reef any more! I drove by this place on the weekend, and the large Trinidad flags caught my attention, so I decided to investigate tonight. This place is serving up all the Trinidadian staples I grew up on as a kid. There are a small selection of Appetizers to choose from and for Mains you’ve got a selection of different curries with your choice of rice or roti. if you’re not feeling like curry they also do stewed Chicken with rice and beans. If you’re looking for a quick and filling eat, I suggest getting a couple Doubles or Aloo Pies. Tonight I started with Doubles. The bara was fired to perfection. It wasn’t greasy, the dough was soft and just a little chewy. The curried chick peas filling was well seasoned and generous. It’s was a challenge to eat without spilling anything(just like the real thing). The only thing it was missing was the mango and cucumber chutney you normally get with it. For a main I decided to go with the Goat Roti. It’s mixture of curried potato and curried goat wrapped in a dhalpuri roti. The there was a generous amount of goat in the roti and it was melt in your mouth good. The roti was also well done. It was thick enough that the whole thing didn’t fall apart when you picked it up, and it was stuffed with just the right amount of dhal. The prices here are very reasonable. All the main courses are between $ 8 and $ 11 dollars and you’re not going to go hungry with the portion sizes I saw them serving. The food here is almost as good as my mom makes, so I know I’m going to be a regular here.
