We have fallen in love with Ontario wine country today. In fact, we were in complete and utter bliss walking into Frogpond’s estate… Then we had the wine. The property and staff are absolutely lovely. Both stars are for them. And if you’re willing to reconcile that that is what you’re going to enjoy, then please, go do just that. But if you are going for the wine, you may be a little disappointed. We are organic loving, chicken raising, hippies from the U.S. West Coast that, going in, thought Frogpond would be our favorite stop of the day. From the sounds of it, Frogpond was to be our kindred spirit, reincarnated in wine form… But alas, it was not meant to be for us. The wine is unusual. To say the least. We had the Cabernet Franc and the Gamay Noir, with the intent of sampling more and purchasing some bottles to take home, but we were so turned off by the offerings, we ended up just awkwardly bailing. To be honest, it’s just«too soon» for me to give an objective break down of the wines. I just can’t even mentally go back there right now. Mostly this just makes me sad. Because I wanted to love it. I wanted it to be wonderful and lovely and amazing and a pillar of higher standards to hold other wineries to, like, «See! You can do it organically and do it well and be successful.» And to be perfectly clear, I believe all of those things to be true. But Frogpond failed to show that with their offerings today. They, in my honest opinion, did not compete with the plethora of amazing wineries surrounding them. And there is really no reason for that.

We had a very nice time here. The cab franc was good, and the ice wine. Not a fan of the rose. Staff was very kind and helped us find our next few stops. Would recommend.

One of the wineries we visited was Frogpond Farm, which has an emphasis on organic wines. «OOOH…ORGANIC», our secret hipster brain squealed. We arrived and then encountered the most uncomfortable 10 minutes of our trip(this is including nearly getting hypothermia from the Maid of the Mist). I was wearing my «Yelp» tshirt(if you don’t have one, go get one… it’s so crazy super comfy!), and the lady pouring the wine was helping out another customer… while bitching about Unilocal the ENTIRETIME. I was quitely buttoning up my jacket so she wouldn’t see my shirt, because she was so venomous in her hate of Unilocal(although, it seems that her vitirol is really against the 2 people who reviewed this place before me — they both gave her 2 stars and she was ESPECIALLY bitter against the Unilocaler who said that her wines tasted like dirt… for the record, it didn’t, but it was extremely«grassy») that I was afraid I was either going to get kicked out or she was going to poison my wine(with organic poison of course). Once I buttoned up my jacket, and directed her onto different conversation(like, you know, actually telling us about the wine instead of how the wines don’t taste like dirt and how Unilocal is extorting her and how everyone who is associated with Unilocal are dirtbags and assholes and reviewers on Unilocal are ignorant about real quality and blah blah blah) it was pretty pleasant. There is a fee for the tasting, but because we only tried 2 of the wines(I’m so sorry, but while I agree that the wines did not taste like dirt, the wines had a very strong«grassy» flavor that might resonate well with some people, but it just wasn’t our thing), and didn’t really want to try the others(also, I think she saw how uncomfortable we were), she waived the tasting fee, which was super nice of her. If you’re into organic wines, this is worth a stop as I think this is one of the only two(maybe three?) wineries in this area that specialize in organic wines. But if you’re an onophile, really love wines, or wearing a Unilocal shirt, I highly recommend that you drive on past this one.

I organized a bike wine tour with some friends and this was our least favourite winery. The staff seemed not that knowledgeable and the space was very small, and as well we didn’t really enjoy the wines.

Being organic(in both the grape-growing and wine-making process) is very cool but the wines didn’t taste very good. I felt like I was drinking dirt. This was one of our last stops on our wine adventure and I wish we had skipped it.
