Had breakfast there today. We were seated and then nothing. Waited 5 minutes to be approached in a restaurant that was not at all busy. Smallish coffee cups and a pour yourself carafe — doesn’t keep coffee hot though. 2 ounce orange juice, not freshly squeezed was a bit of a surprise — 6 bucks! The way it was served would have you think it was complementary. I had the Belgian waffles. Lots of blueberries but the waffles had a strange flavour, like the taste of old fat from the griddle. Barely acceptable. Between the bizarre elevators in this hotel and the unremarkable restaurant, I won’t be back.

I stayed at The Westin on business for about 3 weeks and ate breakfast here every single day. Really. I didn’t miss a day, in part because breakfast was included in my stay, but also because the food, despite being repetitive, was really good. The only downfall is the repetition. Nothing about the spread changed here throughout the entire duration of my stay. Nothing. Highlights if you’re ordering the buffet(I can’t speak for anything a-la-carte): –Crème brûlée –Yogurt with fresh fruit and granola –Assorted fresh fruit –French toast with berry compote –Carrot, ginger and mango juice If you’re ordering the buffet, which comes to about $ 30 total with tax and before tip, they’ll give you a to-go container if you ask for one. If you’re staying here on your company’s dime, check and see whether your tip is included. Mine was, but the servers weren’t forthcoming about it. If you want a copy of the Wall Street Journal, go down to the first floor lobby. They only keep the 3 Canadian newspapers in the restaurant.

Daly’s is the restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Westin. We booked a table the night before @ 9:00AM to make sure we could get one as it was a busy weekend! Expensive…yes, this is a Westin(not Tim Horton’s folks)! We had the continental breakfast while staying here and it really was one of the best Continental breakfasts I’ve had in a long while! Excellent selection of many items while staying very healthy. Fruit, pastries, cereal, smoked salmon, cheese and cold cuts with yoghurt muesli this is so awesome! Coffee was medium strong and they brought a pot to the table. Also for my young daughter one of the servers came in and did a magic trick for her! A bit of entertainment while eating breakfast! Really nice touch! Don’t come here and expect a $ 4.99 breakfast. Full service business-luxury hotel chains yes do charge an arm and a leg but we enjoyed it!

Are you allowed to charge $ 6 for orange juice if it’s not freshly squeezed? Apparently this restaurant thinks it can, and has. Connected to the Westin Ottawa and the Rideau Centre, it’s a place meant for business people expensing their bills. $ 18 for an egg white omelette that only has cheese. There was a single broccoli sitting on the egg, and a slice of tomato. A bit of hash on the side. The food was decent, but omelette plus orange juice = $ 30 after tax and tip? I gave zak’s diner 3 stars and I could have had freshly squeezed orange juice and a more filling omelette for less than $ 20.

I was at Daly’s during a recent conference in Ottawa. I only had lunch, it was fine. The staff where really nice and helpful. That stood out. Not sure what other hotels charge for coffee but $ 4 for a cup of coffee is gouging. I had a beer in the bar at the Westin, and a half pint, not full, a half pint was $ 6.50. I don’t know what it is about hotels that they think it’s ok to gouge, or ‘screw’ you because you’re staying there and already paying a lot. I really do think the travel industry is it’s own worst enemy and I have no sympathy for their plight at all. If you want local to frequent your hotel as well, charge more in line with the plethora of other options that surround you.
