I’m a big fan of this place. Their dumplings are super delicious and their portions for noodles and vegetable dishes are great. Even their delivery is fast and courteous. They are a little pricey but worth it. We order from these folks at least once a month. Last night we ordered from Oriental Chu Shing as a New Years treat and we always ask for no mushrooms or shrimp in dishes that have it because it’s really annoying to pick out food you don’t like after spending $ 60 on a meal for you and your loved one. Of course one dish came without as we had requested and one did. We ordered on skip the dishes and left detailed instructions on the two specific dishes with pleases and thank yous. We find this happens 50% of the time with any restaurant anyway, but it was the first time it has happened with this one. So they get 4 stars.

I’ve been going here since I was young and they always have tasted delicious. The staff are very kind and I feel comfortable around them all the time. I would totally recommend this place to anyone who wants to enjoy some relaxing warming food on a wet rainy day.

Chu Shing is an Ottawa institution in traditional Cantonese fare. There restaurant is located on a second floor right beside the beautiful Chinatown street arch. They had to earn this prominent place, located down the street in a smaller premise. For us, this is a Dim Sum location. The fare is fresh, swiftly served with the traditional dim sum efficiency. I would compare the dim sum here to my favorite places in Markham and Toronto… Almost. For Ottawa, they are certainly in the top three dim sum restaurants. I recommend the sesame balls, hagow and shoomai. And if you are looking for something with greens order off menu for fresh Chinese greens with ginger or garlic. The service is friendly and accommodating to all comers, but I am always pleased to see as many Asian guests as others.

Service was good and polite, food tasted authentic and atmosphere is your typical large Chinese restaurant dining room. We grabbed ginger beef, peking pork chops(like wings), watercress, crispy fish in corn/egg-whites, cold chicken/picked vegetables, sweet tofu, and obviously rice. After 8pm is the snack menu, so the dishes are smaller and evidently cheaper — helps you get a better variety of dishes. Unfortunately no Lazy Susan, but it wasn’t a big deal. I almost always go with people that speak mandarin/Cantonese, so can’t speak to any language barrier. Costs about $ 45 w/o tax/tip, which wasn’t bad considering the amount we ordered. Probably your best option in the area.

Avoid like the plague. Don’t ask the jaded waiters for too much because they are unlikely to even get your that rice you asked for but will gladly put it on your bill. Servers will also lie till their face turns blue. We were promised fresh unfrozen fish and we were served spongy garbage Overall shitty chinese food at best with extravagant prices. Took 70 bucks to feed a family of 4.

Made rsvp for mothers day and when it came to getting seated the idiot manager(same manger who was a server at the time who decided to collect money from me for an error he made himself on my bill a month later. he and his family now own this restaurant) said there was no rsvp. I checked the list myself and found my own rsvp. Dim Sum dishes took too long to come out considering how busy it was for mothers day. Ordered from the lunch menu and the dishes came out with too long of a gap between them. this in addition to having had to try and find a server to ask for rice. I favour and am biased toward the old owners never had a problem while they ran it. That incident involving the bill and collection agent aka the new boss definitely did leave a bad taste in my mouth. Take that for what it’s worth but to me that was wrong the way that went down. Be sure to review your bill for errors otherwise he won’t be shy in staring at you like a hawk and collecting from you even if it’s months later. It’s too bad cause I did enjoy eating here but frankly if I do find myself eating here it’s definitely a last resort.

A friend and I were having Peking duck(two ways) here when I noticed that there was a short piece of black hair on my piece of duck. I flagged down who seemed to be the manager(she wasn’t in a uniform, but was still helping out) to take a look at the hair. First of all, she didn’t even say sorry for the piece of hair in my dish, but claimed that«the chef that prepared it was bald», so that there was no way it could be from the kitchen. Our server came a little after and explained that there was no way it was from the kitchen, and that she had no idea where it came from. She then accused me and said it was MY hair(which is a long mix of brunette and blonde, and my friend a light brunette) while clearly the hair on the dish was short(about 4″ and black). I just looked at her in disbelief as I’ve never gotten this kind of customer service before, where I, the customer, was being accused of placing hair in my dish. The manager took the plate away, not asking if we wanted another plate of the duck. Afterwards she told us that we would not have to pay for the dish. But when our server was giving out the bill, she told us that she can only give us half off from the dish(since it was made into two dishes), and we agreed because it was fair. She then comes back and tells us that the congee we ordered had no price, and that if we could just not pay for the congee instead. She wants to cancel out the cheapest dish we ordered to substitute the hair in ANOTHER dish. Of course we argued with her as it’s not even the same dish with the hair, and eventually she came back with the bill with the Peking duck canceled out. She also did not bother asking us what complimentary dessert we wanted, and I had to ask to get them. I’ve never had such bad customer service in my life. Food is OK, some bland. Will not be going back.

I am so excited to(finally!) find a place with a dim-sum menu that looked good, so we went in for brunch a while back. Crucially, they offered deep fried taro and meat dumplings, one of my favourites and something I use as a litmus test for dim sum places.(If they don’t offer it, they’re probably trying to pass off being able to offer a few frozen dumplings as offering dim sum… or so I tell myself.) There’s another dim sum place nearby, but it seems like every time we try to go, they’re closed for a private event — and I’ve heard decreasing enthusiasm about that place, anyway. ChuShing does the full cart-style dim sum on weekends, though where you sit seems to matter a great deal to the selection you receive(it would be nice if they figured out a way to remedy this). Everything we ordered was tasty, a relief after visiting a few places with sort of bland, disappointing dumplings. We’ve also stopped in for take-out. The service when we did this was uncommonly friendly and helpful, and we were brought some tea while we waited and I rubbernecked the many dishes going by. As we were eating with my young nephews, I wasn’t able to order the spicy dishes that I normally would(or the duck! sigh), but what we did get was solid, even if it wasn’t out-of-this-world like some of the stuff we’ve ordered at other Chinatown restaurants. Prices are average, but they offer a wide range of late-night options from their full menu that would be very nice if you were just looking for a quick bite at the end of your night, or if you were looking for a way to try a lot of different things. Barring another exciting visit, I’m giving this place a tenuous four stars for offering yummy dim sum and good service. If you plopped the same restaurant in a different Chinatown with more options, it would be a solid three.

Was visiting Ottawa for the weekend. Came in here yesterday to have dim sum to shake off a hangover, at a friend’s recommendation. They push trolleys around until about 3pm from which you can grab different packs of dim sum, or noodles, or a variety of things. Good service too, and open space. I enjoyed it. It was really really good, and great prices. About $ 13 each with tip. Afterwards we all felt perfectly full, not too much, and not hungry for a while either.

We have been on and off clients of this place as the quality can vary. We were back here recently for Chinese New Year’s dinner and realized it is under new management and possibly with a new chef. It’s tasty, fresh and not greasy! We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner which consisted of: sizzling pepper steak, Beijing style pork chops, shiitake mushrooms on bok choi, minced duck lettuce wraps, and hot and sour soup. I came back with two friends for dinner a couple of weeks later. We ordered a dinner combo and it was a great deal with good variety: fish maw soup, big salt and pepper shrimps, almond chicken and Chinese greens. We paid $ 15 – 16 each.

It’s no surprise I’m not a fan of the Chinese restaurants on Somerset. We were here on Family Day for a family dinner. Arrived at 6pm and the place was almost a quarter full. We placed our order and they had it before 6:15pm and I started catching up with family. 6:45pm the waitress comes by and tells us our food should be out soon and honestly none of us realized that 30 minutes had gone by and it wasn’t a big deal. 7:15pm my cousins grandparents were hungry and asked us about the food… we waved someone down and were told it should be soon. We realized that food was trickling out of the kitchen that day and 2 tables that were there after us had packed up without getting food and left. 7:45pm we were asked by our waitress if we wanted to wait for our food or leave and try another place… seeing how we had been there that long already my uncle decided we were going to stay in case we had to repeat this elsewhere. 8pm-8:10pm our food arrived. I think our last dish around around 8:15pm. Seriously if you’re here for dinner and food doesn’t arrive within 45 minutes I’d go elsewhere. I don’t really like the food here but my family does for some reason. That was the first time I’ve ever had a waitress come out and ask us if we wanted to wait any longer for food… nice gesture I guess!!!

I used to go here often a few years ago with my family, as they have a very large space, but I find that the quality of the food has slowly declined in recent years. In my experience, the service has always been fast, and they’re usually willing to make whatever you ask for, even if it isn’t necessarily on the menu. Their menu is quite extensive, though many items tend to be fairly greasy. In my opinion, the best, and probably the only, things to order here are dim sum and duck. The dim sum is pretty good, always hot and well-portioned, and the peking duck is very crispy. Both are very tasty, and as far as I know, low on MSG. All their dishes are affordable, but the quality is less than other restaurants. They’re open late, though — until midnight, every night, so it’s pretty prime student grub.

Repeat offender at this place. Great place to get food, I found some of the dishes a bit oily, but I got over it once the flavors and taste consumes your senses. The best things on the menu are most definitely not the deep fried, American Chinese food that we’ve all become accustom to, but rather the simply Chinese veg, with garlic, fish with ginger, soy, and scallions. They have off menu items, and if you know what you want they’ll make it for you. The turn around time is not too bad, the food always arrived pretty steamy. Would recommend giving it a try. I’ll be returning.

We came here for a quick family dinner after spending a day getting aquainted with the Canada’s capital. My parents insisted on having Chinese yet again, and emphasized that nothing fills you up better than a big bowl of rice. Aye-yah! The restaurant had an eerie feel and was located in what looked to be an office plaza. I just remember sitting down, and feeling grimey, and had to wipe down my plate, cup, and chopsticks with hot tea. Is it me or do you also find yourself wiping down your utensils at almost every Chinese restaurant? This seems to be the case for me regardless which country I am in. When the food came out, it was not piping hot– just 2 notches above luke warm. My sis and I usually look forward to the crispy shrimp chips that garnish a Chinese roasted chicken, and we were disappointed when our first bite did not result in a resounding crumble, but instead we were gnawing at it like a ball of gum. Stale shrimp chips are YUCK! As for service, our waitress was never too far when we needed her, and was eager to serve us. I’m not quite sure if it’s because of the fact that the waitress was so interested in hearing about our hometown, or the fact that we spoke her native dialect, but we received excellent service that day which is why I am giving it 2 stars. Food could of been better, but what quality can one expect when $ 160CAD can feed 8 people with an 8 course meal?
