I popped into the Candy Store(gosh, the practical part of me just loves it when shopkeepers keep the name simple!) during Westfest this weekend, and my inner seven year-old was simply smitten. All my favourite candies were on display in a chic, retro-feel atmosphere. What’s not to adore? Razzels, Big League Chew, Good and Plenty — I was in absolute heaven. The store also stocks a great collection of gifts that would be perfect for a bachelorette or birthday party. The Candy Store recently joined forces with Thimble Cakes( ) which was the driving force behind my visit. Candy AND cupcakes? This is like a Katy Perry and Spice Girls concert all in one! While I was very tempted to try their sweet potato and bacon cupcakes(yes, you read that right), I had just finished lunch and was craving something less… lunchlike. So I grabbed a couple mini cupcakes and shared them with my two partners in crime. My favorite? Chocolate chip with vanilla icing and(low fat!) dark chocolate zucchini. I love that you can fill your craving for cupcakes, grab a coffee, ice cream, a gift, or stock up on delicious nostalgic candy. As a delightful bonus, the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable about their products. They mentioned they’re always looking for other people’s favorites, so let them know if they’re missing something you love.

Nostalgic candy that now costs way more than it did when you had it as a kid, this store is a favourite of kids today and has a wonderful selection of old and new-school candy. Ice cream too for hot summer days. My favourite is the old fashioned Dutch licorice. They have both the salty and sweet flavours.

Remember the corner candy store that your parents and/or grandparents would to tell you about? Well, its returned, but this time as a nicely designed(more on that later) upmarket candy shop in Westboro Village. Glass containers are filled with tempting items such as bubble gum, gummies, chocolates and other sweet cravings. One can opt to fill a bag of sweets or purchase prefilled cello bags filled with goodness. The charming shop appears to be a replica of another found in San Francisco, CA by the name of Miette( ) that was founded some years earlier, down to the wallpaper, color scheme and interior touches. While completely unrelated to one another, it was a bit of a surprise to walk into The Candy Store, 2440 miles away from San Francisco and do a double take. I remember this color and wallpaper scheme I told myself. When I mentioned it to the clerks, they had no idea a similar shop existed with the same look and feel, I suspect that the Ottawa owner was so smitted by the San Francisco store«Miette» that she transported the idea back to Ottawa.

Great place to find your childhood candy favourites but the cupcakes from The Cupcakery that they have every Saturday are amazing! The best in Ottawa! I have had at least 4 of their flavours and the Dulche de Leche and the Peanutbutter ones are my favourites, Rich dense cake, perfect icing and the filling is delicious. They are $ 3 a pop but so worth it!

The Candy Store is a throw back to old fashion candy shops with but a gourmet twist. The store is beautifully decorated with pretty pink wallpaper and chandeliers hanging over the cash area. Jars filled with colourful and decadent treats line the walls and tables and customers are encouraged to try before they buy! When I was there the staff were super friendly and welcoming and offered lots of information about the store. The actual way that I was greeted was ‘care to try a triple chocolate dipped malt ball with blood orange center’. Who on earth could say ‘no’ to that! The store has only been open for five months and was started by a local westboro resident who, irony of all ironies, spent the past fifteen years in the field of dentistry! A small A board announcing The Candy Store as THE destination for Halloween treats is was drew me in. To be honest, I could never afford to stock up on these delicacies only to give them all away but it is a place I will coming back to to treat myself! Also worth mentioning is that they have cupcakes on the weekends and operate an ice cream bar in the summer.
