Bistro Le République

If you want a simple, decent breakfast spot in this neighbourhood that is not over-​trendy (over-​priced) and they are friendly and you get what you ask for, this is the place. Although she is very very nice and accommodating, I think that on weekend mornings they should hire a second server because it gets quite busy. Their home fries are delicious.

On arrive la un mercredi, ben relax avant un show de Mac de Marco au Rialto.
Je me dis que je vais en profiter pour passer un vieux coupon ILOVEMTL qui est expiré comme d’habitude mais qui garde sa valeur nominale.
On s’assoit, la serveuse nous remet le menu sans même nous demander si on veut quelque chose a boire. Pas de Panique elle va revenir qu’on se dit… ca a prit au moins 10 minutes avant qu’elle revienne :-(

Au menu, on a 2 choix de table d’hôte mais ca l’air que non (le parmentier de canard confit n’est plus disponible) OK??? Il nous reste au moins le burger d’agneau qui était très bon. Les frites sont superbe, la salade qui accompagne le tout est médiocre (vieille salade qui goute amer).
Le potage en entrée était excellent, le thé ou café qui venait avec la table d’hôte nous a jamais été offert mais on s’en fout.
La où ca se gâte (parce que jusqu’à présent on passé un pas pire bon moment) c’est quand on veut quitter. La serveuse jase au téléphone avec une amie depuis 10 – 15 minutes pis semble totalement ignorer qu’il ya des clients dans le resto. On a dû lui faire des signes avec notre carte de crédit pour qu’elle allume qu’on veut le bill et qu’il est temps de raccrocher avec sa copine.
Je me présente pour payer avec mon fameux groupon expiré et elle me dit qu’elle né peut l’accepter car elle sait pas qu’est ce que c’est. J’insiste, elle appelle son patron, il lui dit qu’il né connait pas ce truc car il est propriétaire seulement depuis peu !!! OK???
Je lui fait lire le règlement universel de ILOVEMTL qui dit que le coupon garde sa valeur nominale après expiration, elle recontacte le patron… Il REFUSE encore…
Je commence à m’impatienter parce qu’ on a un show qui commence dans 10 minutes
Croyez-​le ou non, on doit rappeler son patron, je dois lui parler moi-​même et il est agressif avec moi au téléphone. WOW!!! Il veut que je revienne une autre fois avec mon truc parce que Monsieur va valider l’info??? Ben oui Monsieur l’ Idiot moi j’ai juste ca à faire…
Finalement, je paye avec mon coupon et je reviens plus jamais… dommage parce que la place est nice et la bouffe est bonne. C’est d’ailleurs pour ca que je donne une étoile :-)

This is a nice little spot in a beautiful stretch on Bernard. We arrived for Sunday brunch and the restaurant was not too crowded. Despite this, the service was not great — we were never offered more coffee after our first pour, which came about 10 minutes before our meals. The food is really quite good, though. I had the Republique, and my husband had one of the specials, egg, ham, cheese on French toast. With two coffees, was about $ 35.

Hate to say it, but this was the only place I didn’t enjoy while in Montréal. I ordered an omelette with cheese, bacon, tomato (they offered a make your own omelette with 3 ingredients). What I got was a tomato and bacon omelette that was over cooked and then covered in melted cheese. I“m sure I’m not the first person to order this item so i’ts not possible they didn’t know how to make it, right? And this was a French Bistro, right? To be fair, my companion enjoyed his eggs florentine, and they did look delicious. Maybe I just got the cook on a bad morning.

This is one of our regular Outremont lunch spots, it’s kind of like our Cheers because we know everyone there and they know us. The portions here are generous and the service is quick which is important on Monday-​Friday for us office people. I normally get the tuna sandwich or whatever special looks good that day. The soups here are usually awesome, the bread is tasty and the fries are yummy and cooked just right. I am not a dessert person, but the guys here in the office seem to live for their carrot cake/​cheese cake concoction.
It’s fun coming here and they know what we like to eat, what specials we like and what kind of beer is our favourite (Friday’s only!)

We came upon Bistro La Republique after another one of our dinner plans went awry. We noticed their street front terrasse and it wasn’t completely full so we snagged seats right away.
Service was a bit slow, only one waitress working. Once we placed our food orders, she assured us that the food would come quickly as not a lot patrons were eating.
I ordered the Poulet-​Lime salad ($ 12.50), while others ordered the Republique burger ($ 12.75) and the Vegetarian sandwich ($ 9.75). Since it was a hot day, we grabbed some fruity wine drinks — Tinto de Verano ($ 6).
The burgers and sandwich each came with a hearty helping for frites while the portion size for my salad was massive. I could have shared it between 3 people.
A lovely spot for food and drinks to take in the Outremont neighbourhood vibe.

Lors d’un rendez-​vous au Café République, j’ai eu l’occasion d’y boire une tasse d’espresso. Comme ce petite bistro de la rue Bernard agit également en tant que maison de torréfaction, il va s’en dire que mon espresso était savoureux. Quant au service, il était impeccable. L’établissement étant un bistro, on peut aussi bien y déjeuner le matin qu’y souper en commandant une table d’hôte avec du vin. Bref, c’est un bistro sans prétention qui vaut la peine d’être découvert.

On my first trip to Montréal, I was staying with a few friends nearby and had a lot of time to kill while they were all in morning/​afternoon classes. My first day, I wandered around the neighborhood aimlessly, looking for a place I could feel comfortable sitting at by myself (one of my ultimate phobias), have some coffee and maybe a small meal, and pretend to write down profound thoughts in my journal.
I came across Café Republique and it totally fit the bill — nice outdoor patio, coffee galore and plenty of cheap eats. I spent the rest of my mornings here chain smoking and drinking coffee for the duration of the trip and never once felt awkward sitting alone. Really pleasant café with really nice waitstaff.
