I had heard good things about Quebec-style smoked meat, but my first encounter with it was not very memorable. I stopped by a random smoked meat place on Rue St Jean, and was served something basically indistinguishable from supermarket pastrami. Fortunately, for my last meal in Quebec, I decided to give smoked meat another try, this time at Brynd. This turned out to be a good decision. I got the assiette garnie($ 14ish), which consists of a smoked meat sandwich, fries and coleslaw. They also threw in a giant cornichon. The slaw was of the vinegarey variety, not too heavy on the mayo. The meat was extremely tender, smoky, moist, with a nice bark — basically exactly what you’d want from cured, smoked meat. The regular-sized sandwich doesn’t come with much bread, but the meat is piled high; with the fixings, it was plenty of food for me. If you’re hungry, you can upgrade to the jumbo for a couple of bucks more. Besides smoked meat, they sell various other sandwiches, salads, poutine and such. They have a full espresso menu, and a bunch of beers on tap. Service was fast, friendly and bilingual.

Not that much flavor here. Informal, and fills your belly. But I’m feeling a little led astray by fellow Unilocalers on this one. Not delicious enough, given the hype. We had poutine, smoked meat sandwiches, and smoked meat salad. Had much better similar food in Montréal. Is it just us, or is it more difficult to find good poutine in QC?

This restaurant was recommended by the staff at the Hotel Saint-Germain Dominion and we were so happy we stopped in. We ate on the terrace, which has a great view of the fountain at the Gare de la Palais with the beautiful station in the background. I had a Tremblay(glass) and my DH a coke. The server was absolutely lovely and we didn’t need to ask her to switch from french — as soon as she heard our«bon jour» in american accents she switched to english. She took our orders in quick time, answering a few questions, and returned with drinks and pickle(sour). We had the regular poutine(first timers — french fries in beef gravy with cheese curds melting over the top) as an app, and then regular smoked meat sandwiches with side salad. Poutine is a great dish, not that I’d run for it every day but worth saying you’ve had it. Great hangover food, I bet. The salad was good size, mixed lettuce with grated carrot, red onion, cherry tomato, nicely dressed. The sandwich — the meat is like super mild corned beef married with pastrami, with the texture of the softest pulled pork all rolled into one! There was plenty of meat on plain mild rye? or rustic white? bread, ye

Having traveled all the way to Montréal from QC, we were told we HAD to try Schwartz’s Deli smoked meat sandwich because Anthony Bourdain aired it on his show. Well after trying Schwartz’s then stopping into Brynd Smoked Meats on the recommendation of a Canadian Sailor, we are sure glad we did! We ordered the Poutine regulaire and the jumbo smoked meat sandwich, both of which was absolutely delicious! I vote the smoked meat here hands down better than that of Schwartz and without the ridiculous long line! This location is fairly new and not as busy so give it a try!
