If you’re on your way to Sunset Grill, this is fair warning — detour somewhere else. Red Deer has a wealth of good breakfast spots, and this is NOT one of them. As a note, I normally don’t post bad reviews after one meal, but as I tried to contact the management of Sunset Grill and didn’t get a reply even after a week, I feel this is a fair posting. On a recommendation of my family, I decided to try out Sunset Grill as opposed to some of my other regular breakfast places in town. It’s well out of the way, down on Gasoline Alley, but I’d heard a few good things from my family, and the few reviews on Unilocal seemed reasonable as well. I drove down there with my friend, and we noticed it was quite busy, but decided to give it a go anyway. Upon entering in, we were seated relatively quickly, although the seating was pretty cramped. Our server took our orders(French Connection and a Corned Beef Hash), and then, essentially disappeared. We drank our coffees, and our waters, and waited close to 25 minutes before our food arrived. Our server never bothered to check up on us before our meals came, and didn’t offer to refill our empty waters when he delivered our meals, just the coffee. When he came back with the coffee, I indicated that my eggs weren’t done properly — I had ordered eggs over-hard, and I was given a mass of eggs that were a blend of yellow and white — what looked to be scrambled eggs. He argued with me that that’s how over-hard eggs looked. I sent them back, requesting over-medium eggs instead. 5 minutes later, I had another mass of eggs, and they looked nearly identical. After poking around, I finally found some yolks, but they were hard and nearly indistinguishable from the whites anyway. The rest of the plate was a similar disaster — the potatoes ranged from mushy to under-cooked, and the bacon was dripping with grease, to the point that I only at one piece and left the rest on my plate. Our server didn’t return to our table to check up on us after leaving my food. My friend’s meal was similar — his corned beef hash was a pile of dried-out meat next to hashbrowns. His poached eggs were small, and served in a too-small ramekin so they were piled up on top of each other. Another server came around, and asked if we’d like more coffee, well after both of us had decided we didn’t want to eat any more. We took the coffee, and asked for our bill. When our original server came around, he asked if everything was alright, and I told him it was generally terrible. His reply, under his breath, was that he was sorry. He left the bill and walked away. We finished our coffees, and rather than having a manager come to our table, or have something done about the poor experience, we were simply left with our bill. I paid at the cash register, and wasn’t asked about the quality of the meal, or anything at all — no chat, nothing, despite there being no line or reason for the rush out. Needless to say, the first person I told was the family member that had recommended Sunset Grill to me. I followed that up with an email to the chain, and, over a week later, they have yet to respond. I am hugely disappointed with the experience I had — not only was the food bad, but the service was some of the worst I’ve experienced in a long while. The server was slow, argumentative, and, when I informed him of a problem, he failed to do anything about it. Few places are on my «never go back again» list, but this one takes that and runs with it.

This was our second choice as the place we were trying to go was closed. We were able to get good parking and we’re seated right away. I has steak and eggs and everything was done just as I like it. Brother had French toast and eggs and sausage. It was good. Everything was good but very simple. Would come again
