I saw these guys at the Salt Spring in The City show at Heritage Hall over the weekend. One of the few food related booths at the show. I picked up some curry inspired spices for a friend of mine who is going outside the box in terms of cooking. It is his B-day in the next few days, therefore, this was the perfect gift. Very friendly people to deal with. Prices were fair.

I can’t rave enough about how much I love Monsoon Coast spices. Who raves over a spice blend? Trust me you will. When you get your spices normally jarred and sealed, you are buying something already months if not years old, that was dried somewhere far away, and vacuumed sealed to buy you a couple months of unsealed freshness. Monsoon Coast is a little company on Saltspring Island that brings in the spices fresh, and creates some absolutely amazing blends, that simply taste 100x more fresh than any other mix you have ever tried. I was given their«Tajine spice giftbox» for christmas years ago and I fell in love with their Moroccan La Kama and Ras El Hanout spice blends. The Kama is a sweet, dried fruit inspired flavour monster perfect for any tagine you can think of, I also like it when making Moroccan quinoa salad, and even a wonderfully fragrant Nasi Goreng. The Indian inspired spice blends are out of this world, and taste fresh roasted. Just opening the jar of the Monsoon Balti is mouth watering, and the Mahavira’s feast goes perfect in Dal. I even managed to impress some of my foodie Indian friends, who for once found my attempts at cooking a sambar. to be mildly authentic. Yay!(it was thanks to Monsoon’s Kerala Chaunk). If you are ever at the Saltspring Island saturday market, taste their Railway Chai… I love how soothing and wintery it is. I don’t work for them, but maybe I should given how hot under the collar I get about their spices. Maybe I can work this review into some free chai???
