I probably visit 40 – 50 used antiquarian bookshops worldwide every year. Without question, The Haunted Bookshop is my favorite. If you are looking for a dog-eared copy of Anne Rice, don’t bother. But a pristine as new copy of Steinbeck’s Mice and Men(UK1st) in jacket, then this is the best place in the world for you. Why? 1. Fresh, interesting, and well-cared for stock. The very pleasant woman behind the counter told me that they just sourced a collection from Jersey, the island in the UK. Now, that is reach! 2. Civil, educated bookstore banter from customer and staff alike(this seems to be a quality in most Victoria bookshops). You learn by sifting through the books, and from listening to the other humans in-store. 3. Crazy reasonable prices for antiquarian books. 4. No friggin’ cats and no untoward smells. They say Sydney is booktown, but for me it merely houses the best booking experience I could imagine.
