I used to complain about Freds a little before I started checking out some of the shops in other towns. Fred’s is actually pretty good for prices. Selection for my type of music has been in decline for decades now which is sad. Their vinyl selection is good, not great, but good. Their used vinyl selection is poor. Overall worth the trip downtown, best record shop in NL for sure.

This is THE record store in St John’s. If anyone says«The Record Store», they’re referring to «Fred’s». And considering that it has sparse competition, it’s actually pretty decent. The wall on the left as you enter is a tourist trap, filled with popular Newf albums. As you walk through the records on display, you begin to realize that they have a decent and wide selection. And if they don’t carry it, they’re more than happy to order it in for you. What jumped this experience to five stars was how the cashier lady handled my friend. My friend told the cashier lady that she had accidentally forgotten to give him a twenty last time he was in. Rather than trying to discredit him, the lady immediately apologized and agreed to make it up to him. How sick is that? I was also hoping to buy one of their cool Fred’s Record’s T-Shirts but they were all out my size :(It’s only one more reason to come back to this city!

A record store is a record store is a record store… Unless it’s a legacy and a gem like Fred’s. Fred’s is the kind of place that makes you want to order records, tapes, CDs, and DVDs even when the material is available to purchase or download online. It’s the kind of place that is a joy to visit and spend time in. Getting lost in the stacks, perusing the Staff Picks, listening to their suggested tracks. They’ve got everything: Rock, Jazz, Classical, World Beat, Folk, Top40, Traditional; a great selection of artists, local and global. Helpful and friendly service is part of why this place is so wonderful. Thank you to Fred’s family.

Wide variety of music and more. This last time, I picked up a CD of traditional Newfoundland songs, as well as an amazing documentary audio CD on Newfoundland history. Their locally top-selling display has a wonderful mix of CDs… when I was there this summer, it included Amelia Curran, Sean McCann, and many more. Part of a dying breed of independently owned, local record(CD) stores. Don’t let places like this fade away. :)
