Loved how the atmosphere relates back to an older time with the classic wallpapers, the classic furniture, and the old looking hardwood floor. Other than the ambiance, I would say everything was below par. The service was as slow as you can possibly imagine and when the food arrived it was soaked in oil. Most of our party did not finish their food because it felt like they reheated the food via the microwave technique. All to say, I was very disappointed as I heard a lot of good things about the restaurant.

We were fortunate enough to experience the Old Surrey Restaurant last night for dinner. This place hit all the marks. The food was outstanding in an atmosphere that is very elegant. The service staff is incredibly attentive and work as a team(as it seemed) to provide you with extras at each point. My wife and I are both long time restaurant industry workers and are usually tough to impress yet this place did and we would go back again 100%. Definitely give this one a try, I wish Surrey had more classy places such as this.

Can’t believe Newton has something this nice in it. Such wonderful food and ambiance. So high end it makes no sense it’s here lol

Four of us visited this long-time Surrey stand-by. And having never been here, even with growing up in Surrey, I was excited to give it a try. If you are looking for good food, with good old-fashioned table service(prep done at the table!), then check this place out. Great!

LOVE this place SO much. The service was very slow that’s the only downside. The food was great and decently portioned. The ambience? Nice. Best thing to get there is the château briande! If not for the taste, the experience.

Had birthday dinner at Old Surrey on Friday night courtesy of my daughters. Four of us had the Ryder Lake rack of lamb which was very good and my wife had the Halibut which was fantastic. Two people had the beet carpaccio salad that they really enjoyed, my wife had the lox, shrimp, and crab salad that she described as amazing, and two of us had tenderloin pieces with mushrooms in gravy on puff pastry that was outstanding. The shrimp bisque was okay but a little too subtle and the oyster plate was good but I prefer oysters without embellishment and these had a light vinegar and red onion dressing that was light but still, in my opinion, hid some of the oyster’s fresh sea flavour. Dessert was a rhubarb and strawberry cheesecake that was described as really good and I loved the sticky toffee pudding. The service was perfect — I would happily return.

Came here for a date night with the hubby, was not dissapointed. There was a definite limit on parking but we snagged a spot. Everything looked gorgeous, like we were in a rich elderly couple’s home. The restaurant itself is very unique and tasteful. The aroma coming from the kitchen was also delightful. Now i was prepared for an expensive meal but was pleasantly surprised to find out they had a special menu with several courses for a reasonable price! I was sold. So our first course was truthfully unexpected. Our waiter brought us 2 cumin-sauced meatballs that were tender and flavourful, though a little lacking in salt. «Compliments of the chef» he told us. I was very impressed. Next came a delicious basket of fluffy bread and whipped butter. It was warm and the crust was perfect. The butter was amazing. He then brought us garlic butter escargot with lemon. This was… an interesting dish. My fiancé couldnt keep them down without wrapping them in bread, while myself i wanted to be polite so i ate them… i didn’t like them at all but i’m sure it’s an acquired taste. I liked the garlic lemon butter and soaked it up with bread. The next course was a soup, clam chowder, it was hearty, rich, and very different from anything in a can. Once again my fiancé turned his nose to it but he did eat some. I on the other hand couldnt get enough, it was very tasty. The server soon brought us our main course– rack of lamb with red wine reduction and mint jelly with dauphine potatoes, carrots, and green beans. Mmmm!!! We both LOVED this. I wasnt keen on the mint jelly but wow the lamb was tender and succulent, the potatoes were AHMAZEZING and my fiancé(who hates cooked veggies) ate every last bite. Overall very good. The waiter brought us a crème caramel for dessert and unfortunately they ran out of cheesecake so we were also given a chocolate pâté in lieu of cheesecake. All in all very good food, we thought we were missing our salads but im still honestly not sure what happened. The meal with everything was 45 $ each before tax and gratuity. Candle-lit dinner with delicious food, delightful staff and gorgeous scenery made this date one to remember. Will be coming here again for our anniversary :)

I’ve gone here 2 times with my gf, both of them were for special occasions. I have to say the experience was fantastic. The warm and dim lights set the mood when you walk in. The server was kind and welcoming, and the tables were well made. The food was amazing in taste, you might not get alot on the plate but it makes up for it for taste. They always have the best fresh fish of the month. They gave us free chefs special to try and sample. First one was crab cakes and the second time was prawn, and both were a unique taste… In a good way :) Like any restruant, their are some downsides. This place is above another restaurant and the parking for this place is not the greatest. I would not want to come here without a reservation since most of the time it’s packed on the special days. We would come back here again.

Yeah, I’ve been coming here most of my life for special events including my nineteenth birthday(which was like. um… five years ago, ok?). Yes, I too have an emotional attachment, to some degree, like Marla. Here‘s what I can say that is a little more food related. 1. This place is classic fine dining. Table side service, beautifully plated dishes, and exemplary attention. Yes, the caesar salad is real, and pretty to die for. 2. I had my first bite of manchego and honey here during one of their forays into Spanish cooking. It changed my life. At the time I couldn’t find manchego anywhere… now I can. So they were ahead of the curve there! 3. Have dessert. Trust me. 4. Boozy coffee to finish your meal poured on fire. Classic, delicious. Feels… special. 5. You‘re in an old house, the ambiance is kinda awesome for the classic experience. 6. Not a cheap experience… but entirely worth it.

It was 1974 when I first ate here with my soon to be husband. One romantic night. We had escargot for the first time, and drank Royale du neville(a sparkling rose from the Loire Valley) We also had Chateaubriand for the first time. Yes. I have a good memory. I remember that night because it opened my eyes to cuisine. I was a horrible cook at best and soon I was going to be a bride. Soon after, we married and moved close by and went here at least once a week for our first year, until I said, «I’m pretty smart. I’m sure I can figure this cooking thing out. Even if I learn how to make a Caesar salad like this». This restaurant inspired me to buy my first cookbook,(Julia Child). Fast forward almost 40 years. We’ve been here for almost every anniversary, and I’m pretty decent around the kitchen. It’s always been a place where we can get away for 2 or 4 hours and talk about life, make plans, and reconnect. So, forgive me if this particular review isn’t very opinionated or precise. I have a lot of emotion attached to this place. However, barring that, there have been so many memorable meals here. Of course, the traditional Chateaubriand Bouquetiere, which is my husband’s favorite is table-side service of a beautifully plated tenderloin, a centerpiece for a garden of local vegetables, at least six or seven beautifully prepared in various preparations, from a simple steamed green bean to Potatoes dauphinoise. Over the years the restaurant has done some very nice changes. I particularly loved the Spanish Tasting Menu they had a few years ago, paired with some lovely Spanish wines. It was my favorite meal at the Old Surrey, and I hope they do that sort of thing again. I particularly like their commitment to local farmers and producers and changing up their menu from time to time to reflect the season’s offerings. It always makes coming here a wonderful surprise. And of course their service. I’ve lost his name, but their regular server, who has been there for years makes you always feel like you’re «Home for the Holidays» or some special event, even if it’s just a Friday afterthought for dinner. His service and table-side application of everything from a Caesar to a coffee is a joy to watch. This place might be old school, and I know that I have a romantic attachment to this place, but I’m so glad that this is one tradition that hopefully is here to stay for a long time… even though now, after many years, I’m a very accomplished home cook.
