I am German and I really miss our bread. I Unilocaled German Bakery and Andy’s place was the closest to my house. I really have to admit that I loved this place. I found very good looking loafs and I tried one which was very good, very German. From now on I will not buy any other bread for the time I am in Vancouver and I’ll try all their variety.

Small and humble bakery that sells breads, spreads and treats. They have gluten free German bread which is awesome. Prices are very very modest. The lady at the til was extremely friendly and helpful.

Remember that episode of Friends when Chandler & Rachel were fighting over a cheesecake? They loved it so much they even ate from the floor? Well the German Style Cheesecake from Andy’s pretty much delivers the same salivating experience. I am NOT a cheesecake enthusiast — it’s not my favourite dessert generally. And even when I do have it, I almost always feel like I’m forcing myself to eat it. So what in the world made me walk into Andy’s for the first time and pay money for cheesecake? I have no idea, but I’m SO glad I did. The guy in the store was incredibly nice(I’m not sure if he’s actually Andy or someone related. For the sake of this review, I’ll just call him Andy). So I asked him«what makes a German Style Cheesecake different than other cheesecakes?» He tells me that instead of the typical cream cheese cheesecakes you find in Vancouver, the German Style Cheesecakes are made from a different type of cheese called Quark. And he goes on to explain more about it but I have such horrible memory, I don’t remember what else he was telling me. I ended up choosing the cheesecake with mandarin oranges(they also had a plain one) to go — best decision of the day! The cheesecake wasn’t overly creamy or moist, and not too crumbly. IMHO, the perfect consistency. So…obviously this review is based solely on Andy’s German Style Cheesecake. I realize most of the other Unilocal reviews are about their breads and the wurst/sausages & etc… but Andy was so nice and the cheesecake was so good, I would like to assume that the sausages would be just as good. In any case, I will definitely be back.

Me: How long you been open? this place is way cool and I love the scnitzel sandwhich /wurst in a bun lunch concept! Hipster: uhm … since 1983. Me: wha? Where have I been? I’ll take the Schnitzel Sandwhich. Hipster: Uhm, sold out. All we have is the wurst in a bun and would you like mayo, mustard and saurkraut. Me: yes, yes, yes and yes. This is a cute little spot. The wurst in a bun was great and I am slowly getting more and more in love with wurst culture. We also took a piece of apple strudel and half a poppy seed roll. All for $ 11.00 and some change. Another reason to love the drive! g

It’s easy to pass by Andy’s and not even realize what you’re missing. I don’t know how many times we walked by and didn’t think much of it. It has Bakery & Deli right on the title, but for some reason nothing about the store front ever screamed out«you must try this place.» With limited weekend hours, maybe we just got used to seeing it closed. I’m so glad we finally did try it. Inside Andy’s is really quite charming. The lunch menue isn’t real extensive, schnitzel sandwich, bratwurst sandwich, cold cut sandwiches, and a couple kinds of soup. But, what they lack in selection they make up for in quality. The cold bratwurst sandwich seemed a little odd at first, I’m just used to grilled brats. But, I eat salami’s and other meats cold, so why not? It was a high quality brat on fresh made bun. What’s not to love? The port schnitzel sandwich was even better. The pork was well seasoned, flavorful, and fried to a perfect golden brown. Throw on some cheese and put it in the same fresh bun and it was heaven.

What a cute little boutique bakery! How have we missed this intimate place while walking by so many times? Fresh baked breads and made to order sandwiches. Window seating only. –Adorable!

I was at my sisters last week for breakfast and she served it with an amazing multi grain rye bread. I was so impressed that after I went down to the bakery to buy one myself. I also picked up a nice little apple strudel for later. The storefront is pretty small, but the service was friendly. Next time I go back I would definitely give the soup a try as it smelled delicious. If you want to go make sure you bring cash as they don’t take debit or credit.
