Went here the other day with the boyfriend and had a completely pleasant time. It’s a sleepy little spot on the north end of Commercial and it’s never very busy, so if you want fish & chips in a hurry this is a great place to try. I ordered a three piece cod and chips meal for under $ 8, and it came with a bit of coleslaw on the side. I’m not sure if they offer any other kinds of white fish, so if you’re looking specifically for halibut or haddock you may want to go elsewhere. The portion size was perfect, and everything tasted great. I think this is a great reliable spot to get a good plate of comfort food fish & chips. I’ll definitely be coming back!

The daily special of cod and chips is delicious. I frequently get it on my lunch break at work.

For the price, this place is hard to beat. The fries are abundant and crunchy, the fish is delish… and 3 bucks for a glass of beer is nice, too! Our meal came very quickly, and the service was friendly.

Just the best authentic fish and chips place. I would come here everyday if I lived nearby.

Windjammers has darn-good specials. For $ 7.50, you can get 3 pieces of fish(in my case, cod) and a side of salad or fries. The pieces of fish weren’t particularly large but they were delicious. The batter was crispy, and the fish wasn’t overcooked. I also had the calamari($ 7) which wasn’t too bad, but the sauce was definitely lacking in tang and flavour. Windjammers doesn’t have a lot of seating and I ended up seating myself because it was very busy. There is an East Indian woman who is very kind and polite, but there was another woman working who was quite loud and disrespectful. When a group of diners had taken a seat, she sprayed a chemical cleaning solution on the table right in front of their faces! I couldn’t help but think that inhaling that stuff mustn’t be healthy. She was also complaining to her coworkers about working overtime and that she was supposed to have ended her shift already. Did the thought never occur to her that all the customers could hear her loudly complaining?

I visited this place several times when it was on Main St, always after a day out hiking(therefore hungry) and it was always good and satisfying and very good value too. I finally visited their new location on Commercial Drive and I now wonder if they were having an off night this time, or have they kind of gone downhill? I was eyeing the two pieces of Halibut with fries for $ 12; this was what I’d always ordered before and it had been a good amount of food. But the server said they had a special featuring 3 pieces(2 halibut and 1 salmon) on sale for $ 10. Well who could say no to that? I ordered that, and when it came the three pieces were tiny! Did they think chopping a given portion up into more«pieces» would make us think we were getting more food? My stomach knows the difference! It was very nicely cooked, and good fish, but after an active day it wasn’t enough! I’d rather pay more and feel satiated when I leave. I wonder if ordering the regular menu instead of the special would have meant more food? Or have they decreased their portion sizes in general? I know fish, and especially halibut, is expensive. So raise the price! Don’t cut the portions! You know you’re in trouble when you’re still salivating over the plates you see being brought to other tables AFTER you’ve eaten yours. I had to eat another dinner when I got home.

Wow! Had the special posted outside. Fish was perfect, salad dressing was lovely, awesome chips. Fantastic, would come back for sure. Friendly staff on, too.

The guy was patient in taking my order, however, when it came to pick up the order, it was 10 minutes over the time that was quoted. It is a hole in the wall but not in the charming hole. I would get take out again, however, wouldn’t sit and dine. The guy when I picked up my order seemed like a space cadet and had no idea what I was talking about RE: pick up. They win points for a fish that was nicely fried, battered and tender. Chips were okay. Price was a little on the high end but worth it in taste. Just not so much in customer service and ambiance.

The extra star is for delivery, how cool to get this type of food when you don’t feel like going out lol. It’s probably not much of a comparison, but it’s better than Mr. Pickwick’s and a tad below C Lovers but without the high pricing. Clean place, near the northern end of the Drive.

This place was not good. First off, our server was not knowledgeable of the specials at all. At one point, he had to actually go outside to read what the advertised sign said. The fish tasted like it was previously frozen, and the fries were your typical run-of-the-mill frozen fries. To top off the end of the night, their debit/credit machine was not working properly, and the server kept taking the machine with the credit card to the back. I must admit, I was definitely suspicious of this. There was nothing special about this place at all.

Stopped by and tried the all day specials. There was the $ 7 three piece cod special and the $ 8 one piece cod and one piece salmon special. We also ordered a $ 5 clam chowder as a starter. Portion size was good for the price. The chowder was very runny and lacked richness and flavour. There was an okay amount of seafood and veggies. The batter of the fish was light and crispy. I did find it a bit bland and it can benefit from more salt or spices. Fish was moist and cooked perfectly. Fries were crispy and perfectly fried but also needed some salt and vinegar for more flavour. I guess that is why there are condiments on the side so you can season the food to your liking. The coleslaw had a light coat of dressing and had a refreshing tartness that I liked. Service was prompt. We were seated right away and had water given to us shortly. Food also arrived shortly after we placed our order. We did have to flag our server to refill our water. I have had better fish and chips elsewhere but I also had to pay more. If people want to try some amazing salmon fish and chips, I recommend Washington Avenue Grill. Ocean Avenue Restaurant, Pajo’s, and Cockney Kings Fish and Chips have better tasting batter in my opinion. However, for a filling and very well priced meal, this place does the job.

I never order off the real menu, so I can’t speak to the quality of those items, but the daily specials have always been exceptionally cheap and good. Eat in or take out service is usually prompt and friendly(though it does depend on who’s working; the regular woman(owner?) is excellent, but others vary). Simple food and plain, pleasant atmosphere, but I would definitely recommend it.

Good if you get the specials off the Daily special board outside. No frills local fish and chip shop. Halibut is fresh and the chips are fresh cut. Which is the way it should be. Chowder is a little lacking in body and flavor. On the whole not a bad little spot.

Went here with a groupon. my first experience was calling to make a reservation before I was allowed, was kind of rude about it. We ordered the fishcakes for appetizer, couldn’t find the fish. more like potatoes cakes. Then we received our order — salmon burger and chicken burger. A huge bun hiding a dismal burned piece of chicken, not even a full breast. The other burger had two tiny pieces of salmon, was really pathetic. Asked for salad on one order and yam fries on the other, got fries on both but it was quickly fixed by giving us the salad and yam fries as well as fries. The last item was deep fried mars bar, how it came to the table cold is odd as usually they are hot out of the oil? It was ok. How does a place expect people to come back after serving such poor food? We won’t be back and could not recommend it.

This place has super small portions. We only went there because we had a groupon so we thought we’d check it out(can’t be that bad if its on Commercial Drive). However, I’d not recommend it to others. Better to try Cockney Kings who have the best fish and chips I’ve had in the Lower Mainland. The owners are Indian and I don’t think they know much about running a business like this. They had country music playing and she refused to change the channel saying that«this is the only one we have». I bet she didn’t even understand it. Food was not impressive with the taste or the portions. Save your money and go someplace else!

Boyfriend and I ordered a ‘special’ — $ 6 for two pieces fish plus chips and coleslaw and a fish burger. Had I known special means re fried yesterday’s fish and smaller than regular I would definitely order the regular stuff cause I could definitely afford the extra $ 6. Also burger’s buns were soggy. Slow service only one lady — polite yes — slow double yes. One customer(seemed like a regular) got ‘nicer service’ water with ice and straw and others got just glass of water no ice no straw. No second time.

Cheap fish & chips and beer on the Drive? Oh yes. Parking is available on the side streets. The inside is pretty dim, but does look classy for a more casual place. The waiter was very courteous and professional. Reminded me of a cruise ship for some reason. Fish & chips are decently priced, in the $ 6 – 13 range(1 – 3 pieces). The batter was nice but also not too thick, and the fish was pretty juicy. The fries were also nice and crisp. The tartar sauce could’ve been«lumpier», but it was decent overall. There was also a side of coleslaw. The drink special was $ 12 for Raven beer this Friday. Can’t go wrong there. It was nice of the waiter to suggest that instead of our original plan of 3 pints. Next time I have a hankering for battered fish, this place makes the list.

YUM! Was sad when the location on Main Street closed. Was happy when my honey told me that a location had opened on Commercial Drive. Was happier still once I tried the new location and found the food to be delicious. Reasonably priced. Daily specials. Quick, friendly service. Poutine is decent. Really nice chips, just the right about of crispy. Big curds. A beef/chicken gravy that is delicious but not too salty. Decent burgers. Yam fries and amazing chipotle mayo.(Pic: ) Fish is a good deal. Reasonably sized pieces, tasty batter, and perfectly prepared in hot, fresh oil.(Pic: )
