Great — love their BBQ stuff and their fresh product. My go to place to eat when I’m in the area and want something that tastes great at a good price and when I want fresh chicken that tastes like, well. .. chicken!

UPDATED: I no longer recommend this establishment. The last few times the chicken seller was rude(the woman), and the younger man who runs the BBQ Hut side was obnoxious. Never again. I buy my chicken at Windsor on Main now.

This place is now called My Barbeque Hut. I had the best chicken donair ever! Everything was so fresh. Yes, it did take a little while to prepare, but this tells me that they are making it fresh and not squeezing it out of a bag. All the meat is organic, free range. I will definitely go again, next time I’ll have the falafel.

Never heard of Apollo Poultry? You’re not the only one. I didn’t even know the real name of this business until I looked it up to write this review. Although I’ve been shopping here regularly, the name was never clear. It still isn’t. Is it «Fresh Free Range» as some online listings suggest? Is it «My Barbeque Hut» as their new green awning portrays? I don’t know. But what I *do* know is that this tiny, easy-to-miss, hole-in-the-wall poultry shop on Commercial and E 1st(in front of the bus stop next to what used to be Kitchen Corner) is a reliable place to buy fresh, good quality, free range chicken. Owned by a family and run by a father and son(I think), if you’re on this stretch of the Drive looking for dinner ingredients and you’re craving chicken, pop in here — they’ve got fresh chicken thighs, chicken breast, chicken wings, whole chicken, chicken bones, etc. It’s all sourced from Abbotsford’s Maple Hills Farm. Fresh free range chicken isn’t all they sell, however. They also have a selection of organic chicken, pre-packaged chicken(sausages, ground chicken), as well as frozen items. They also have coolers selling cheese and free range eggs, and some basic non-perishables(sauces, pasta, stock, etc.). If the dad is working, he’ll likely try to up sell you on the other items; just a friendly«not today» will do if you’re not interested. And I know what you must be thinking. «Robyn, why Apollo Poultry? Why come here when there are other places on Commercial Drive where you can buy fresh, free range chicken?» Well… sometimes it’s a matter of convenience; other times it’s a matter of freshness. Donald’s Market sells it prepackaged in styrofoam. Pasture to Plate sells it, but in extremely limited quantities. However, I can always guarantee there being fresh chicken at Apollo, and often I have the shop to myself! If you walk past Apollo in the near future, you may notice that they’re in the midst of constructing… something. I overheard one of their conversations, and it seems as though they’re planning to sell cooked BBQ chicken one day soon. Time will tell. But they’re renovating half the shop while staying open. So this place is slightly weird, yet I’ve come to realize that I like shopping here for chicken because it’s what they specialize in, because I feel it’s fairly priced, because it’s sourced from a local farm, and because I’m supporting a small quirky family-run business — that’s what shopping on Commercial Drive is all about. People haven’t caught on to Apollo yet… it’s certainly not trendy, but hey — that’s quite alright by me!
