We lived at 1209 Jervis Street, where Gordon Nelson raised our rent by 16 per cent with about six weeks’ notice. We had no other option but to move out. When we moved in, they said the fixed-term lease was just a formality and of course never mentioned that it allows them to increase rents far above the legal limit. From talking with other tenants, it became clear others experienced the same increase. Apart from that, there were other problems with the building. The washer and driers were often broken. There were frequently water leaks in the storage room(which got on our stuff) and it smelled of mould(really quite disgusting!). When we complained about the state of the storage room, we were told that because it was an old building there was nothing they could do. They advertise bike storage, but all that means is that you can try to find some room in their cramped, smelly storage room — and of course there is very little room. They sold the building in Sept 2015, and tenants only learned about the sale through the media. The property manager refused to say who purchased the building until less than a week before the management changed. Very poor communication around this.
